    That was by far the best 891 FT8/digital mode set-up video that I've ever seen. (Sorry Josh, and others who have done one as well... this one is better). I appreciate the explanation as to WHAT each setting does and WHY you adjusted them to what you did. Now I'm going to go get my rig up and running and get some digital contacts going!

    Thanks for the great video! I was up and running with the FT-891 and the Tigertronics SignalLink in the time it took to watch the video. On thing I had to change was the Data Data Gain. You said it didn't matter and left it at 50. For me, The Data Mic Gain did nothing, and I had to change to change this one to 21 or the ALC was always way too high, no matter how low a TX setting I put on the SignalLink.
    Oh, and I love your call (and shirt)! SAFETY FAST!!! I've got a 1969 MGBGT in British Racing Green that my dad bought new and kept it in the family. Not restored, but well maintained with about 140K miles. It still has the bumper mount on it from when I was in college, using my Kenwood TS-520S as a mobile rig for HF in it and the Heathkit HW-2036A for 2m. I never worried about running down the battery because you can start those cars on a slight hill and popping the clutch in reverse...

    This has been a great tutorial. I have a 1-yr old FT-891, and I have thought about digital modes. I'd like to use a digirig controller. My last venture into digital modes was 20+ years ago, and I used the MFJ-1278 for packet and AMTOR. I used packet for the DX Cluster, and I enjoyed RTTY and AMTOR a few times. I can still remember the QSO on RTTY, and the other ham asking if I have AMTOR capability. I gave him my 4 character identifier, and BOOM! My radio started TXing and RXing. Super cool. I'm hoping that new modes will be more exciting and fun.

    Hi Steve. Thank you for the excellent tutorial setting up the FT-891 with the MFJ Digilink. Once all the settings are in place everything works great. First complaint goes to MFJ - they DO NOT supply any USB cables whatsoever and you need two. So once you get your MFJ-1205 you cannot operate out of the box, unless you have 2 extra USB-A to B laying around. MFJ does not even mention that the USB cables are not provided on their website. I shot them an email about this matter. Second complaint goes to the Yaesu engineers for not adding separate digital operation profiles in the menu so you can quickly switch settings if you are using different audio interfaces. So I had to make a cheat sheet of the settings. The FT-891 in data mode is actually pretty quiet compared to my IC-7300 which makes lots more fan noise when running FT8.
    Thanks!

    Great job! Sometime it is had to find someone to help you setup the newer modes on older radios. There are a lot of good older radios available out there that lower the entry threshold for new hams to get into that part of the hobby. This helps out those new hams as well as breathing new life into the old radios. My hat is off to you for that!

    The 891 is really a bargain for a great radio. You describing the menus is very helpful. What is the biggest problem of the radio is they really were not built for digital modes. I wish there was software that would change the menus to and from digital modes so you can easily change to phone or CW. Then it would be a much better radio for everyone. Who has not been operating FT8 then cannot get phone or CW to work because you need to adjust the menus.

      The radios and audio processors should be wireless Bluetooth. You can buy $40 mixers that join PC, mixer and source but not a $1500 wireless appliance? It demonstrates the truly unimaginative and entrenched style the Japanese corporate radio mentality is famous for. Look to other brands to develop theses methods before they do. It's just unfortunate that these companies are much smaller making their products expensive. I think those like FLEX will be those innovators while Yaesu and Icom rush to integrate Windows 7 to the market 😆😂😉

    Importantly, and also maybe superfluously, since if you're this entrenched in Linux you'll probably already know this, the audio input might not be alsa!
    I point this out just in case anyone goes into the comments because they can't find "alsa-so-and-so-device".
    There are a few potential options for audio sources and sinks in Linux, and alsa is just the one that Linux Mint uses (as do many, many others). It could also be pulse or pipewire, or a few other things.
    Alsa is certainly very common, though.

I'd keep 100% duty cycle modes below 25 watts. Without checking, I think Yaesu recommend keeping power below 40 watts for full duty cycle modes. But to help longevity, I would not use more than 25 watts, myself. I'd want to preserve such a great little rig, not risk burning up the finals - or the ATU if one is being used, or the antenna if it's only rated 100 watts SSB - keep it to 25 to 30 watts. From my limited use of digital modes, with my SignalLink USB, soundcard device. (I assume the MFJ is the same!?) I have found that the setup is like using a 3 part, set of weight scales. In order for everything to work, it all has to be very balanced. The radio, balanced with the Signalink, then all the settings within your PC program.
    A very tricky thing, which causes a lot of spurious cursing 🤬🤬🤬, heavy drinking 🥃🍺🍷, and spontaneous cranial combustion 😵‍💫🤪🤯🤕... Until you actually find harmonious balance within the force 🤗😊. Or... Maybe its just my Charlie Brown luck? 🤔

      Yeah, this radio is a bit difficult, so I made that checklist to go over every time I switch in and out of FT8. Newer radios have a built in sound card and better menus so that transition better. The FT-891 is still a great rig though

    Hello Steve!
    Great presentation at the point when I needed it most.
    I followed exactly your guidelines but the problem I face is this.
    I cannot get the receive level slider more than 30 db.
    I do not use an interface.
    I made a box with isolation transformers and connected to a cheap usb external soundcard.
    I have managed to make two contacts but that's all.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Do I definitely need an interface?

      @@georget7047 So you mentioned RX levels and then talked about ALC (A TX Side thing) - your RX could be set through RF Gain/Squelch on the rig (outer knob, upper left) and your TX side should be just below the ALC threshold, maybe 1 bar on the meter to know that its working. Hope that helps - I'm back home now and could give it a better read.

    Thanks for the indepth video, Steve. I'm new to digital mode ham radio and have heard of using a Digirig for FT8. Is that anything like the mfj 1205 or just a specialized box for cables?

    My FT891 is now turning on SPL when transmitting in FT8. I’m using WSJT-X. Under Files/Settings CAT is COM6, Digirig is COM4, Baud 38400, data 8, stop 2, Handshake None. PTT CAT, Mode Data, Split Operation RIG. I tried FAKE IT. But that brought up an error message. Under CAT test I get a right failure message. Just tried it again…green light. PTT test gave red light. Why does Split turn on? Anyone have an idea & suggestion for correction? Thank you.

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  6 місяців тому +1

      Having SPL on doesn't hurt anything, the software will move your radio's frequency to where it would be best suited for operations, both TX and RX - it's the operators choice to run split, fake it (which does the same thing without the radio's split function) and none (which does nothing). Have fun playing around with it

    • @temporarilyoffline
      @temporarilyoffline  Рік тому

      This is a "feature" - you have WSJT-X split mode set to either 'fake it" or "rig" and its moving to the best spot to TX based on where you are on the spectrum so that you get maximum signal out. The FT8 single you TX is only 50hz wide, and 73.5 is a better place for that signal to originate from.
