In this tutorial video I demonstrate how to make a simple block print using easy-to-get supplies and common household tools. Block printing is an easy way to make multiple copies of your designs, weather it's to hang on the wall, custom holiday greeting cards, or a concert poster... This is a great way to show off your personal style!
Woodblock printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. As a method of printing on cloth, the earliest surviving examples from China date to before 220, and woodblock printing remained the most common East Asian method of printing books and other texts, as well as images, until the 19th century. Ukiyo-e is the best known type of Japanese woodblock art print. Most European uses of the technique for printing images on paper are covered by the art term woodcut, except for the block-books produced mainly in the 15th century.
Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing can be done by hand or with a press.

Ingenious technique and great little video, presented very clearly.
Thanks!
Awesome video! Well made. To the point. I like the fact that you teach how to use the tools that are found at home, instead of buying "professional" tools. Thank you for making it easy to learn. 👏👍🏻💫
Thanks!🌻
I have done block printing and let me say that your method is much easier ... how clever and thank you for the terrific video ...
Oh my gosh! You are a genius! I am so impressed with the innovative ideas to save money and yet express artistically and have such an elegant result. Bravo. Thank you for sharing and be well. bye
Brilliant! Such a simple yet effective techinique...
You have the most pleasant video voice in all of UA-cam tutorial world
Thank you for this! It's great to be able to "make" with items you have on hand!
This is great! Thank you so much. I can hardly wait to try this!
Thanks for sharing. Great effects and outcomes!
Thanks for posting. I shared this in my high school printmaking class!
You just blew my mind! The other way is SOOO time consuming! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks! Glad you found this video helpful!
Tfs I love how practical your advice is 😊
This was delightful! Over the past couple of months I've been experimenting with simple printmaking, by drawing on craft foam.
I really like your approaches to using foam instead of traditional lino or wood cut prints.
Watched your 2-color block printing first, and discovered you. Look forward to seeing more multi-color foam prints!
Best wishes for your continued success,
Dianna
I love it! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing the great tutorial.
Great video, thank you.
cool idea! most of the beginners don't like to make woodcut or linocut art because it's hard to find the material (at least in my country!) but you've proven that we can use whatever we have if we put some creativity in it!
Fitri Chomet Thanks for the feedback! :)
Easy peezy! Big thanks!

Sparky16 Awesome! Glad you finally found it!
Love.
thank you so much, I was trying to find a way to use foam sheets for woodcuts.
+Delois Grant You are welcome! Glad you found this video useful! :)
Fantastic! Thank you! (-:
tbh i was finding on how to put our logo into our paper bag and i think, this method (block printing) is cost effective. :) we have acrylic paint on-hand and also cheap too. now I only need a foam paper!
A rolling pin might also work instead of that waterbottle :3
nice! It's cool you used foam instead of wood blocks. That would make it easier! :)
Love it. Could u use this as a low cost silk screen technique for t-shirts?
Possibly. You should try it!
love it :)
but i couldnt get the name of the paper u draw and cut. its E.V.A?
Never thought about using foamboard
Can you apply the same idea to do prints on fabric? Say to make pillows or a boarder on a curtain?
Hi! I am just wondering how do you know which part to cut off? As i am using an image, so i am kind of confuse on which part you cut off and which part you don't...
Hi! Thanks so much for this tutorial; it is very helpful. What type of paper did you use?
Hi Amy,
I don't remember what kind it was but it was an art-grade paper pad. Regular printer/copier paper might also work but could wrinkle as it dries. Try using different kinds of paper to see what works best with your ink/paint.
ehullquist Okay, sounds good! I think I got that part figured out, now I just have one more question. Do you think regular mat board could work as a backing, instead of foamcore? I'm looking to finalize a class supply list, and the mat board is about 1/4 of the price. Do you think that the foamcore is necessary to even out the pressure, or would mat board work okay? I would try it myself, but I am on a time crunch... Thanks for your reply.
Yes, matte board would also work (although I haven't personally tried it). You basically just need something relatively rigid that will keep the foam layer from moving around too much-ideally you would use wood. The foam core warped a bit when I glued the flexible foam down... so perhaps the matte board would be better! It's worth a shot! :)
Let me know how it works out for you.
ehullquist Okay, thanks!
Is it okay to wash the foam image to reuse it at a later time???? I’m teaching my son how to block print. The professional tools are expensive.

Would you say this technique could be used for printing on fabrics?
Would the foam sheet soak up a lot of the fabric paint?
Yes, it absolutely could be used for printing on fabrics. Give it a shot and see what happens!
+Christine1025 I know this is late but make sure when u use for example a t shirt. u tighten the fabric so that the wrinkles dont interfere with your design
hey can you do one on clay i want to know how to do it plz
everything in this video is "hobby" something. hobby knife, hobby foam, hobby shop...
Yeah, probably not my best script writing... 😳
You sound like Mr. Van Driessan from Beavis and Butthead
Hahaha!!! 🤣
@@ehullquist I subbed
Holy cow you cut that linoleum block unnecessarily deep. That makes block printing 1000% more difficult/time consuming.
There are no RULES with art....THAT is what makes it so ENJOYABLE!
You think it's a good idea to teach people to steal other people's images? Maybe a disclaimer in the video would be a good thing.
Thanks for your comment. The purpose of the video is to demonstrate the technique. I think calling it "stealing" is a bit harsh. Artists have been borrowing ideas from each other since the very beginning, and this is no different. It is more of a re-interpretation of an image. Think Andy Warhol.
