Thomas Bewick and wood-block printing | Natural History Museum

Wood-block printing using engraved boxwood revolutionised the illustration of natural history in the early 19th century. The work of Thomas Bewick showed how detailed and accurate images could be printed more cheaply than ever before.

This is a great video. Makes me wanto see more about the boxwood that Bewick and those who followed him engraved on. Turkish boxwood, sawn against the endgrain, then polished? I'm pretty sure that's what we're talking about. That's a hard tight piece of wood that you can set alongside the typeface, then hammer out 100,000 copies. Aw yeah

I love 19 century wood engraving. However, I think that equally fine results can be achieved in Photoshop, on hi res canvas. I will show examples if anyone cares to see.

I've got a book dated,1811 with original prints by Thomas bewick.search everywhere can't find another or even that book it was done for the national history museum, signed by G,coles, curator.
