Yes. I agree with you guys: the Gold Wing is a clear winner.
Larger fuel tank and more stowage space would make it perfect. BMW is a great bike but really, nothing compares to this new Gold Wing…

I have four bikes, a 2009 BMW RT that I recently acquired with 13,000 miles, 94 BMW R1100RS, ‘97 Honda Valkyrie with 102,000 miles and Triumph Bonneville T100. I am mulling over selling all but the Triumph and getting a new Gold Wing or BMW. The RT has already cost me $1,300 in routine maintenance, plus has a fuel gauge (fuel strip) problem that cost me $400 and is on the fourth strip. The dealership no longer works on bikes over 10 years old and the service manager said they have numerous new BMWs that can’t be sold due to leaking brake calipers.

You are not wrong, boss. I sold my Grand America 2 years old since new. Sadly, too many issues and electrical problems. I had enough. I loved that bike. I just got 2020 Goldwing DCT Tour. Do not regret for a min. The K1600 is an amazing machine....AS LONG AS they run smoothly. If not, say hi to the dealer more then you think. Also, very hard to work on.

@@alp3781 IDK. The K bike is a bit different. As someone that rides one up 99.99% of the time, a K1600GT appeals to me more than the GW. The luggage is quick detachable and compared to the 2018-2020 GW, it has more storage. The ergos are better for me too. That being said, the maintenance on the K bike leaves me cold. If I got another BMW, I'd get a RT again.

Greetings from Oregon! Great video and review guys. 2 months ago I traded my 2014 Honda ctx1300 for the 2019 Goldwing airbag model and absolutely love it. No bike is perfect but this one really comes close. The performance is incredible. I'm getting 45-48 mpg. I'm about to go on my first roadtrip with it now that I feel very comfortable with riding it. I was amazed at how nimble the handling is for a heavy bike. Again, great video. Safe riding.

I always enjoy your videos. After watching this, I went with the new K1600 Grand America. Loved it so much till it hit 15K. After that, nothing but crap. I was at the dealer more then you know. It was not a Lemon bike !!! Its all the damn BOSCH sensors that this engine has plus problems with Hot and cold starts plus the major recall they had on the 6th gear which I did not have my bike for like 9 days. No loaner and far away dealer. I HAD ENOUGH !!!! Sold, lost tiny on her and went to the new Goldwing DCT Tour. I have 6K on a 2020 so far. ZEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO problems. She runs so good, so smooth, the Sport Mode is fantastic. I love the DCT and do not miss the clutch any more. I think GW from now on.....period.

Agreed! I bought a 2018 K1600 GTL last summer, after 20 years on my 1999 Honda Valkyrie. I test rode the new Goldwing Tour 6 speed, planning on buying it because of my long history on Honda bikes, but took a test ride on the GTL on a whim after putting a deposit on a GW. Once I experienced the difference in power and handling, ripping off clutch-less upshifts under full power, it was all over. I also liked the Beemer's additional luggage capacity, which is great on two-up trips, and the ability to easily remove the trunk when it's not needed. Ride whatever you love boys and girls!

I've owned a Yamaha FZR750R, as well as a Kawasaki 750 Vulcan. At 58 years old I'm ready to drop some serious $$ on my "retirement" bike. The fact that you two younger guys liked the Honda so much makes me lean heavily in that direction. A touring machine with enough finese and performance to satisfy. @@hereb4theend hi buddy. The biggest reason for me was the DCT box. The bike just felt like a huge scooter. I guess I am not ready for a gearbox to think for me on a bike yet, let alone change five gears in a matter of 100mts. I know you can put it in sport mode, etc, but it was still a schlep for me.
Also, I live in south Africa, and here we do not get the nav on the goldwing, and it is totally senseless to have such a huge screen to only display radio stations. Unlike other parts of the world, for every 1 honda dealership, we have 50 bmw dealerships. The bike also is speed limited to 200kph. The k1600 GTL is about R100k less than the Honda, but it certainly does not have more than R100k worth of extras to justify. Just a few of my reasons.

Great review gentlemen, very fair and complimentary to both fantastic bikes. I ride a 1500 Valkyrie which shares some of the characteristics of the Gold Wing without accoutrements of comfort. I've test ridden the BMW 1600 and other models, and the BMW indeed has strengths for agility, but for cruising, the chassis of the Gold Wing cannot be beat. I wished you had addressed mountain ascents and descents, as this is where the Gold Wing suffers, like the Valkyrie. I've ridden all the European Alps and find the weight of the Wing, and the need to remain in 2nd and 3rd on ascents while using the same on descents, requires extreme diligence on the part of the rider. Doing it two-up is nearly crazy, as weight, inertia of mass on descents in hairpins makes this a challenge. I'm sure the BMW does this better. The comment about road surface is spot on; roads in Europe transition from cobblestone, to flat stone surfaces, to asphalt, and the heavy Wing must be extremely careful. Great review!

I may end up with one of these some day soon and you two helped me a lot. I am leaning to the Gold Wing mainly because of reliability over the BMW. I hear way too many bad stories about BMW breaking down, I don't care if it's under warrantee when I'm 300 miles from the nearest town and 600 from the nearest BMW dealer. Break downs are a deal breaker for me. I know my Honda's and Yamaha's just don't break down, bullet proof reliability is the most important thing for me, over price or style or anything else. I may end up wit either a Gold Wing to the Yamaha FJR 1300.

I think you took the wrong bmw, in this comparison there should be a GTL which is synonymous with comfortable driving, the seats on the GT and GTL are completely different as well as the steering wheel which is in a different position so reminiscent of driving a golden wing, the bmw lacks navigation that would u completed the overall impression of the main board, and let's not forget the BMW has been on the market for 10 years with minor changes, .... both engines are great but the price of the Honda is much higher ....

I can’t imagine it has to be one or the other. There is room in the bike world for all examples of a great tourer.
I’ve admired the GT since I saw the first one. Back then I had a K75RT and it seemed very sporty. Now I have a 2015 Goldwing and my likes have changed after having two ST1300s. Sport touring bikes have great storage but they are noisy. The GW is much more quiet and easier on my head. Maybe I am getting old. At 73 a tall seat is a real challenge.

Doesn't cost play a part in deciding which bike is best? Here in the UK the GW Tour is about £6k or over 25% more expensive than the K. I do like the GW a lot, but I think financial considerations would make me go for the K because that is also a great bike. I don't think the GW is £6k better than the K in terms of performance and equipment.

Thank you for the very nice reportage. In my opinion, there shouldn't be a winner. Those two big tourers with a different proposal. More comfortable driving position for the Goldwing and more sporty for the BMW K1600 GT. The GTL is more similar to the Goldwing. Why didn't you picked that up to compare? The BMW is outdated and I agree that a new make-up would more than welcome from BMW estimators. I am the lucky owner of a K1600 GTL and I use it every day in a big crowded city like São Paulo. I have not so much problems driving between the lines of the cars. The only BIG problem of the GTL is the heat that comes from the engine, in the city traffic, that makes you regret the buy when you drive it in summertime in a tropical country. The rest is pure fun! So, every one should buy the motorcycle that best fits his needs. The most important thing is that there is somebody that test them for us honestly pointing out pros and cons.

I’ll swear to ya...this bike never had a single mechanical issues and runs like a hot butter sliding down on a burnt toast! When not riding it...it purrs like a kitten which you can’t say that about many bikes out there. My next bike will be a DCT GW because my hand is getting painful at times shifting in city streets. • @BobBarkerIsOld

Honda redesigned the Gold Wing to be closer to the K1600GT in the sense that it has become much sportier. Much different from my 1500 vintage.
BMW has a bigger tank, much more storage (this generation of Gold Wing storage is laughable), and that headlight is excellent, very modern but not high tech.
Having extensively ridden both, I pick the Gold Wing (mine is outside now). Lower center of gravity helps. The BMW is too tall.
Two things that never make it into reviews: the passenger seat on the K1600GT-L is comically tall. The passenger looks like they’re riding Jeepers Creepers-style on the trunk rack. Also, the BMW requires premium fuel. While the tank is bigger, I have found my Gold Wing is 40 MPG+ even in the heavy traffic, and I save by putting in 86 octane or higher. While the premium isn’t necessarily required on every vehicle that suggests it, BMW Motorrad is specific.
You also lose your ass on maintenance. And the stupid scroll wheel they brought in the 7 series sedans is moronic. I can tap a button for the heated grips and seat, passenger seat is a dial, on the Wing.
The DCT you just learn in time. Once you figure out how to make it work, it is perfectly manageable in traffic, which I think then guys mentioned. I daily mine, and it irritates me when people assume they can’t ride it in the city. I also have a 1988 model, which weighs about 1,000 pounds. This Wing is substantially lighter.
Also, I got my first Wing in my twenties. I’m not old my any means (thirties), yet I have one. Some of like sitting on a couch with 120 BHP while young idiots ride 400cc crotch rockets. They’re not even in the same class.
Last time someone wanted to race, I said “Okay, let’s go here to San Diego and back.” Kid totally changed his mind.
Great video though! I love seeing this part of the world, and the cobblestone street at the end.

I was quite excited about the news of the new Wing but when it finally appeared and was heavier and slower than the K16 and with less luggage capacity and fuel capacity that ruled it out for me. I'd been hoping that the new Honda would beat the old BMW but sadly not. My K16GT is a daily ride and with panniers off and a bag on the rack it's not bad at cutting through traffic on the daily commute.

    • @justinneill5003
      @justinneill5003 2 роки тому

The Gold Wing is only marginally slower than the BMW GTL version, officially 0.2 sec 0-60, 8mph on top speed. But it’s really not for congested urban roads, strictly distance touring. Unless the extra tech is important, my Kawasaki Z1000SX does both jobs at half the price, has all t essentials, is considerably faster than either of them, and on my last run it returned 55mpg.

About the comment on driving in the city with a DCT. My current bike en previous bike both have DCT and you need to learn how to manage not having a clutch. It's simple if you got a hang of it. Use the rear break more often. If you would have a rearbreak lever where you have a clutchlever it would be perfect.
