Nick has this rare ability to form his voice into different styles. I love his music and his voice.

The treatment of the background vocals is unexpected and haunting - as though the echo anticipates the lead voice, or as though he’s being accompanied by the spirits of the water.
The trick to the art of covering other people’s songs is to make them your own while honoring the vision of the original artist. Nick does that here beautifully.
I'm stunned by some of the comments here. I LOVE Cohen's version of Suzanne. I remember the first time I heard Cohen, and I fell in love with this song in particular. Singing this Nick isn't trying to compete with Cohen, and I would be almost 100% sure he didn't forget the words, he simply sang it his way, which I happen to think made it very beautiful. It was done as a tribute to a singer Nick has obviously admired for a long time. So why bitch and compare? Just enjoy.

I remember these other guys that came to my friend's house that thought Songs of Love and Hate was too depressing. I've realized that this 'depression' theory was ridiculous. one of the most important artist of our era.....his talent is extraordinary ..not to mention the variety of his work ..solo and with his band and other artist....since 1979 has given us ..songs , soundtracks, novels ,creating a world that makes you not to want to escape....
Nick Cave fits into the wow factor. typically you go wow each time you hear him. But now only one man can do this song justice.

He tends to sing a beat behind the back up singers in a lot ot his songs and it appears to be a stylistic thing. The women singers are Julie Christensen and Perla Battalia, aqccording to the dvd I'm Your Man, a tribute to Leonard Cohen.

ooit las ik ergens, dat je vroeger, door de mooie muziek van Leonard Cohen verrast was..hetzelfde geld voor mij door een bijzondere levensloop, hoorde ik pas voor het eerst de muziek van Leonard Cohen in onze eigen gekochte auto met een cassette recorder erin..mijn man liet zijn cd horen die hij tijdens zijn studietijd had gekocht. mijn man was toen 59 en ik 55 jaar we waren in 1995 getrouwd.... hij voor het eerst ik voor de tweede maal ik ...ik geniet heerlijk van de muziek en gedichten..maar heb noch mijn hebben Leonard Cohen nooit gezien..of een concert bezocht....
