  • Madagascar is on the brink of famine because of its worst drought in 40 years. And a big reason for that is climate change. #AJStartHere explains.

    Whilst climate change is very real, something not talked about here is the incessant deforestation of Madagascar since the 70s, leading to increasing dersertification. The country has lost about 80% of its original forests and the primary forest now covers only about 12% of the country.

      It would be nice to expose the level of corruption in Africa that warrants coups again to bring some sanity to the continent of Africa. Corruption is the reason why Madagascans are suffering today...responsible government would have done something long ago to avoid this catastrophe. Of the UAE can provide water for its millions of inhabitants, even though they live in a desert, what's the excuse of African leaders. Military members should protect the Constitutions of their countries again across Africa.

    it really is an inequality issue in addition to an environmental one.
    the ones who have produced the most emissions are the least affected and have the most resources to survive this, whereas the ones who get the brunt of the impact are the poorer ones who produced the least emissions and have the fewest resources to survive

      America, its allies and European countries can waste money on war and weapons, but they will not do anything good for these countries, but they also ruined a good number of countries by pushing them into the fire of war for their own interests. , and then come on news channels and pretend, as if they are very worried about them.

    We've seen this all before. We held huge pop concerts and raised millions upon millions for these starving people, we raised enough money that we were told these people would all receive running water and would never need to worry about water again. We, the people of nations, did that, and what a HUGE lie it was. It seems nothing was done, nothing at all, no running water, and no food, or crops, just millions upon millions, disappeared. My whole life I have lived with adverts asking for £5 - £30 a month in charity for running water in Africa. That's 50 years now, and still nothing changes, but billions has been taken in by these apparent charities. I suggest you go after all those we know who sit with all the wealth from their ill-gotten gains, the people that hide behind these Media outlets, like Al Jazeera.

    "Madagascar is among the world's poorest countries. As such, people's day-to-day survival is dependent upon natural resource use. They must live off the land that surrounds them, making use of whatever resources they can find. Their poverty costs the country and the world through the loss of the island's endemic biodiversity. Madagascar's major environmental problems include: Deforestation and habitat destruction; Agricultural fires; Erosion and soil degradation; Over exploitation of living resources including hunting and over-collection of species from the wild; Introduction of alien species."

    I understand that other countries' actions are causing the major events causing the conditions of living in Southern Madagascar. But what about their own government? Think about it, even if a private company went there to help reverse this famine by investing in irrigation systems, are they going to afford the food? The state has high levels of illiteracy and people may not be able do anything in the form of formal jobs.
    Nonetheless, right now, these people need help alongside good governance and foreign aid.

    • @npc2480

      @italktoomuch6442 2 роки тому

      @@npc2480 The average number of children per woman in Madagascar is about four. Infant mortality rate there is about five or six times higher than in the West. The number of children people have is hugely influenced by how wealthy they are - richer people mean fewer kids. We can debate whether the current model of foreign aid works for these people (my view: it doesn't) but fundamentally, your logic is backwards and your numbers are silly.

      Afica struggles with food shortages because of the historical overemphasis on export agriculture-i.e., the concentration on growing cash crops such as cocoa and coffee, rather than producing food crops for self-sufficiency. Africa became a net food importer by the mid-1970s and has yet to recover since.

      Wrong way round. People on average start having fewer children as they get richer. That's pretty well known. Children in wealthier countries are not needed to provide additional household income, educational opportunities for women mean more women have careers and have children later in life, there is increasing access to family planning and contraception, and increasing life expectancy means that people don't need as many children to be sure that they will survive to adulthood. In the UK in the 19th century, people had huge families (some of my ancestors had as many as ten siblings), and the vast majority of them over the age of ten or so were working in industry to help support the extended family. And since they were considered expendable by their employers and healthcare was non-existent, very few made it to adulthood. Madagascar's current number of children per woman is hovering around 4, by the way.
      There is a lag between living conditions improving and family sizes getting smaller though; population growth is largest when families are still large but infant mortality has gone through the floor. But that can also bring economic advantages as you end up with a large, young, largely healthy workforce for a few decades that can really get your economy moving. Until you end up with the same problem as countries like Japan and Italy with a population of pensioners that is almost bigger than the working population.
      Now, if you're talking about the environmental problem of over-consuming resources then fair enough, but you also have to acknowledge that there are more than enough resources on the planet for all of us and several billion more to have a comfortable standard of living (think of the amount of wealth you might have somewhere like Mexico, for example) but the problem is that so many resources are being consumed by the wealthier countries like the US and Europe, and so many people live in places like Madagascar which are very vulnerable to all sorts of natural problems. But the amount of resources used by people in the developing world is absolutely tiny by comparison to us.

      @@italktoomuch6442 There was a study that the earth's resources are enough for 3 billion to all live in middle class standards.
      There was 4.3 billion people in 1980 now we are almost 8 billion with a forecast of 10 billion in 2050.
      More people need and use MORE , it's as simple as that.
