Roger, as an ex bathroom / kitchen fitter and general plumber / joiner of 12+ years (c. 2000 - 2013 ish), I've watched lots of your videos about heat pumps, lime mortar issues, insulation, heating, windows, etc. etc. - the list goes on and on. I've never seen the REAL you before like in this bathroom refurb video and I can so much relate to your experiences and thought process, I too was soooo fussy and proud of doing a proper job, for my own satisfaction as much as the customers! I think you'll agree with me that having the right tools for the job is probably 50% of the job well done! Amazing attention to detail. It is SO true that when I stand in the shower, I always look at the tile lines and edges, thus when I revamped my bathroom, I made sure it was perfect.

Just found him. I have had a few dodgy builders but the worse thing was when we had water leak and on lifting the floor to trace it we were shocked to find our joist gaps were filled with lots of rubble, dirt and dust. What it taught me is 'never' leave any workmen in your house without being there yourself to just keep an eye on them. I also caught a neighbours builder dropping lots of rubble in between the gap between out houses, there was no way 'ever' of retrieving this.
Those kind of people who do things like that are just sharks interested in the money and nothing else. The sad thing is that even the money is never enough for them. I know some of these guys who just drink the lot or shove it up their nose.
Absolutely brilliant. Inspiring work ethic - trying your very best to get everything 'spot on', love it :-) I also love the fact that the mistakes were left in - makes me feel like I don't have to be perfect!

Amazing video. Just one thing to point out regarding the extractor fan, the Manrose MF100T is in fact a 4"/100mm in line extractor fan, the size you hate. The 6"/150mm is the MF150T. Both models offer a lower speed, so the customer could still have it slightly quieter if it's currently on the high setting.
Great video 👌🏼. Small tip . As the back plates was sunk in the wall for the towel rad instead of using adaptors you could of used 60/100mm rad tails and cut to size

Only trouble with the laser line is if everything you're marking is in the same plane it's fine. Anything behind that plane will be out depending on how much further back it is if your laser is not spot on 90 degrees to the reference plane/wall. Love the videos great info.
A massive thank you to Roger and the entire team. I’ve been binge-watching loads of your videos during lockdown and they are the only thing that have kept me sane. Your are an absolute inspiration. (Although screen-shotting the name of each tool as it comes up and then ordering it online is not doing my bank balance any good!) I’ve just watched this entire video from start to finish (and will probably watch it again at some point). One quick question - what’s the process for getting those plans drawn up (with studs etc). Your plans appeared to have been printed by Abacus themselves. I would like to attempt to do the work myself. Happy to order all of the Abacus stuff, but when I contacted them they said the company you order the Abacus parts through will do the design and then Abacus will decide what parts you need.
That was the best 2 hours ive spent in front of a screen in years !!!! Why ? - because its an absolute delight to watch a skilled professional at work doing it "old school" with belt, braces and an extra belt just in case. Hats off to all the plumbers out there with the same mentalityy.

randomly came by this video while leaving youtube running and it totally made me laugh when he pulled out the knipex mini wrench! i too bought it thinking yeah its small might use it, many years on its one of the best tools purchased.
I always clean out the floor void, much better for the next person going in there, and if it's your own house that's likely to be you! Really cuts down the mess though if a quick cable or pipe needs to run at a later date.
What a great production Roger! Not only educational but highly entertaining with several laugh out load moments. I watched the whole thing with my wife sat next to me, transfixed. As I think somebody else in the comments here said, "better than anything on Netflix!"
Bit like my daughter's ex-council 1960 maisonette. Original building could withstand the atom bomb but several refits of back boiler plumbing to central heating and various changes of lights and power wiring with all the old fittings and sawdust left by council tradespeople was a real puzzle to analyse, diagnose, and clean up to bring pipes, water supply, boiler, and electrics up to standard with many more sockets. Nice to see plumber thinking about making life easy for tiling - doesn't always happen!
Can’t believe I sat for 90 minutes yesterday and a hour today and watched this entire video and enjoyed every minute I wish I could find a bathroom fitter like Roger I’m a keen DIYER but don’t think I would attemp something like this I’ve fitted many a standard bathroom suites and fully tiled walls and floors etc but nothing this complex , this is the next level
Hi Chris When you break it down it is not as difficult as it seems. The biggest obstacle is the time it takes. If you are trying to do it at weekends that is a long time to be without a bathroom

I've only recently subscribed to this channel. God knows why because I've been watching all kinds of building and tool review videos for years. Love the content. Always something new to learn and watched this from beginning to end. I don't know how old you are Roger but it seems like I've been reading your forwards in professional builder since I was in my twenties (I'm 63 )! Well, you know what I mean. Anyway, I remodelled my bathroom back in 2006 and used Wedi board throughout which is much the same as elements. There are 2 solid walls and 2 stud walls. The solid walls were taken back to brick and had a sand and cement render which I then bonded 6mm wedi board to and used 12mm on the walls. The floor had 50mm as it's a wet room with a wedi shower tray and Dalmer drain. Floor and wall to floor joints were sealed with neoprene tape and I even used the proprietary internal and external corner pieces. One of the other things I used but not many others do or have heard of even are Schluter profiles. I used them on the floor to wall transitions and wall corners. The floor profiles come in 2 parts as you order them for the correct floor and wall tile thickness combination. There's not a single bead of silicone in the entire bathroom and in the 14 years it's been in, it hasn't moved or leaked anywhere which is what you expect of course. Also, whilst I remember I used their bath profile which flits under the tiles. it meant that I could tile the bathroom before fitting the bath and when I did I just jacked it up to snugly fit under the trim. Again, it hasn't moved at all and the seal is still as good as the day it was fitted. I'd be interested in what you think of these profiles and even a video on them would be great. They are expensive but my way of looking at it is that you only do it once. Of course, this was for me so cost (within reason) wasn't an issue
Hi Paul Nice to know somebody was reading all that stuff I wrote for over 30 years. I am 67 now so a bit older than you. Sadly Professional Builder got rid of me last year because the advertising revenue has gone through the floor and they had to trim the operation to save money. No matter I am busier than ever on Skill Builder and reach a much larger audience. Hardly anyone mentions magazines these days and I don't think that young people would know what to do with one. If it isn't on their phone they don't want to know.

My wife, recently retired worked, for various merchants from Hall and Co then build center to Jewson to Keyline so she always brought home a copy! Keep up the good work. It's a great channel and also love Robins videos. Couldn't believe that I didn't know the tape at an angle measurement trick!
I replaced a standard ceiling fan with a Manrose MF100T and what a difference... It really clears the room and I don't find it as noisy as the old one. In the loft, I used four little rubber grommets in-between the fan and the floorboard for a little extra bit of noise reduction.

Just a quick comment about the solvent. I used to work in the water transmission industry and for several years in my career, & I was responsible for providing clean drinking water to over 2.5 million people every day. So I had an Expansive system to operate to say the least. And we had multiple systems that operated on 18" - 36" PVC And we used to have to glue joints that you would literally climb inside the pipe! LOL! We would have to have full oxygen environment provided. It looked like deep see diving 100 yrs ago. It still blows my mind that these glue joints of such size can handle vibrations, water hammer, and high pressure the way they do. Chemistry is the best friend of the construction industry! Big shout out to all the chemical engineers out there that provide us with these awesome products that help make us look good & warranty our work comfortably...
Hi Philip What a great comment. I hav never really thought about the contribution they make but you are right. We just accept there is a product that will solve our problem.
@@SkillBuilder Think about the products we were working with just 20-30yrs ago? Building with high tech materials is what will help our environment as much as phasing out petrol engines. And when installed correctly under proper building codes then u get a product that is far superior to anything we produced traditionally.

I always clean out the floor void, much better for the next person going in there, and if it's your own house that's likely to be you! Really cuts down the mess though if a quick cable or pipe needs to run at a later date.

Bit like my daughter's ex-council 1960 maisonette. Original building could withstand the atom bomb but several refits of back boiler plumbing to central heating and various changes of lights and power wiring with all the old fittings and sawdust left by council tradespeople was a real puzzle to analyse, diagnose, and clean up to bring pipes, water supply, boiler, and electrics up to standard with many more sockets. Nice to see plumber thinking about making life easy for tiling - doesn't always happen!

When you break it down it is not as difficult as it seems. The biggest obstacle is the time it takes. If you are trying to do it at weekends that is a long time to be without a bathroom

I've only recently subscribed to this channel. God knows why because I've been watching all kinds of building and tool review videos for years. Love the content. Always something new to learn and watched this from beginning to end. I don't know how old you are Roger but it seems like I've been reading your forwards in professional builder since I was in my twenties (I'm 63 )! Well, you know what I mean. Anyway, I remodelled my bathroom back in 2006 and used Wedi board throughout which is much the same as elements. There are 2 solid walls and 2 stud walls. The solid walls were taken back to brick and had a sand and cement render which I then bonded 6mm wedi board to and used 12mm on the walls. The floor had 50mm as it's a wet room with a wedi shower tray and Dalmer drain. Floor and wall to floor joints were sealed with neoprene tape and I even used the proprietary internal and external corner pieces. One of the other things I used but not many others do or have heard of even are Schluter profiles. I used them on the floor to wall transitions and wall corners. The floor profiles come in 2 parts as you order them for the correct floor and wall tile thickness combination. There's not a single bead of silicone in the entire bathroom and in the 14 years it's been in, it hasn't moved or leaked anywhere which is what you expect of course. Also, whilst I remember I used their bath profile which flits under the tiles. it meant that I could tile the bathroom before fitting the bath and when I did I just jacked it up to snugly fit under the trim. Again, it hasn't moved at all and the seal is still as good as the day it was fitted. I'd be interested in what you think of these profiles and even a video on them would be great. They are expensive but my way of looking at it is that you only do it once. Of course, this was for me so cost (within reason) wasn't an issue

Nice to know somebody was reading all that stuff I wrote for over 30 years. I am 67 now so a bit older than you. Sadly Professional Builder got rid of me last year because the advertising revenue has gone through the floor and they had to trim the operation to save money.
No matter I am busier than ever on Skill Builder and reach a much larger audience. Hardly anyone mentions magazines these days and I don't think that young people would know what to do with one. If it isn't on their phone they don't want to know.
@@SkillBuilder Yes, unfortunately that's the way the print media is going. My wife, recently retired worked, for various merchants from Hall and Co then build center to Jewson to Keyline so she always brought home a copy! Keep up the good work. It's a great channel and also love Robins videos. Couldn't believe that I didn't know the tape at an angle measurement trick!

I replaced a standard ceiling fan with a Manrose MF100T and what a difference... It really clears the room and I don't find it as noisy as the old one. In the loft, I used four little rubber grommets in-between the fan and the floorboard for a little extra bit of noise reduction.

Just a quick comment about the solvent. I used to work in the water transmission industry and for several years in my career, & I was responsible for providing clean drinking water to over 2.5 million people every day. So I had an Expansive system to operate to say the least. And we had multiple systems that operated on 18" - 36" PVC And we used to have to glue joints that you would literally climb inside the pipe! LOL! We would have to have full oxygen environment provided. It looked like deep see diving 100 yrs ago. It still blows my mind that these glue joints of such size can handle vibrations, water hammer, and high pressure the way they do. Chemistry is the best friend of the construction industry! Big shout out to all the chemical engineers out there that provide us with these awesome products that help make us look good & warranty our work comfortably...
And we did it the same way u would a small glue joint.

@@SkillBuilder Think about the products we were working with just 20-30yrs ago? Building with high tech materials is what will help our environment as much as phasing out petrol engines. And when installed correctly under proper building codes then u get a product that is far superior to anything we produced traditionally.
