S1 - Ep 453 - Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town!

  • Exploring the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town was a great decision, as we immersed ourselves in a journey through history within its ancient walls. Imagining the events that transpired within this fortification was both exhilarating and thought-provoking. From the elegant residences of the Governor and his Second-in-Command to the grandeur of the Banquet Hall, every corner revealed a fascinating piece of the past. As we traversed through each of the five bastions and observed the haunting cells where prisoners endured unimaginable hardships, our perspective widened. It was an eye-opening experience that left an indelible mark, reminding us of the enduring significance of this historic landmark. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #Castleofgoodhope #capetown

I'm from South Africa but living in the uk since 2016, and I miss South Africa so much. South africa will always be home I'm so proud of our country 🇿🇦. First time watching your video and it really does hit home. There is such a longing to go back home. God willing it will happen. Thank you for sharing these video videos esp for those who live in other countries. It's so lovely to see my beautiful country and the lovely weather❤️. Thank you and God bless you both.

Take it from someone who emigrated, returned to SA, and re-emigrated. The South Africa we used to know does not exist any more. It is gone. Be thankful that you are in a place where you can raise children and grandchildren safely to have a decent future. Groete vanuit Niew-Seeland.

I was stationed in the castel in 1964 as militory defence, i remember the dungeons with engravings on the walls by the prisoniers they could hear the sea hitting the walls which was 20 ft thick, they were in total blackness, it must have been a terrible experience for them. i remember our dining room serviced by veniculler lift for the food. Hope this helps your visit.

I remember coming here on a school tour in Std 2. Thank you so much for a very interesting and informative tour. So good to pause and look at stuff and not be rushed through by a tour guide. Hope Sonyas knees were up to the challenge and not too painful. Lots of memories of Cape Town. I particularly love the paintings

Hi guys this video ticked all the boxes for me the bollards like old cannon are the same as in Amsterdam!!! If you check out the bricks you will see how small they are this is the same in the Netherlands. The information about the first South African in ww1 lost 2300 men in one battle out of 3000 beating off 10 German battalions in the process !!! Now you can see why there are so memorials in all the small towns you visit .love all the stories and the memories they make it so real. Another brilliant video cheerio till the next one

You must someday have a closer look at the statues of Jan van Riebeeck and his wife Maria de la Queillerie. She was not always next to her husband. I was working in the Paul Sauer building next to the station when they lifted Maria's statue from where it was previously, and "married" the two on the circle in Adderley Street. It was quite a great event and we could watch it from the fifth floor. It was somewhere in 1969.

What a wonderful comprehensive tour of the Castle. Last time I visited there was when my Mom took us for a tour in 1967. Do the viewers know that the Cape Castle of Good Hope is where South Africa's famous Castle Lager is brewed !!😂 Did not see Curtis sipping a nice cold Castle Lager at the restaurant.🍺Fortunately we did not see the plakkers on the way in to the castle.

    • @DustBugsTravel

Thank heavens Castle Lager isn't brewed there! 😁 I don't recall seeing any alcohol on the menu, but I was in the market for large volumes of hydration that day, so Powerade did the job! I may have had a cold one or three that evening though! 🍻

Hi you two! This tour really fascinated me with all the historic facts of 300 years woven into it. With a hall and table so huge it is no wonder that the installation of toilets receives attention on several of the information plates. I've never been to the Castle and did not realise how large and intricate it is, until I saw this wonderful video of yours. Thank you so much for all the effort you both put in. Until next time!
    Keep safe!

I visited the Castle in 1988 and remember the tour guide saying that lady Barnard, I think her name was Elizabeth, swam in the swimming pool on a daily basis. You mentioned a pool. In one of the solitary confinement cells you can also see the bath they used for the prisoners. Apparently they all bathed in the same, shallow, about 30 cm of water. You can see the low, brick wall of the bath. It's just a rectangular shape built by bricks.

We didn't visit The Castle to complain about things. Your comment pertains to a few seconds of footage as if the rest of our video doesn't exist. The Castle is everything but a disgrace, it's a well-maintained and cared-for structure which contains a huge amount of very well-preserved history. It's not the fault of The Castle or its employees that Transnet doesn't resolve the situation with the homeless who has made their wedge of land their home. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Oh, and we're safe and sound and didn't get mugged.
