Traumatizing and amazing how KH's music from the 90's still has such spot on relevance in 2014. Police brutality has such a set place in society and it is disgusting, RIP All the innocent Black youth and other media ignored victims of the police.
I'm not female, didn't understand Bikini Kill, but this song changed me as a person on a deep level. It came to me on a mix CD from a junkie riot grrl. Like her, I was battle hardened, cynical, and cut off from feelings - playing in bands, hard drugs, meaningless sex, working dead end jobs, &tc. When Kathleen sang, "I want to know what love is, I want you to show me" I felt tears well up inside me. I wasn't dead inside, I still had a lot to give, and wanted to connect. Kathleen's polyphonic layered singing on this is beautiful, emotive like the Bulgarian Voices are. Is it off-key? No, it's on a universal pure tone - I felt what she was singing. This song, to me, was Kathleen singing from the bottom of a well, looking up. The words about Jon Benet never was, and the cop boyfriend had me sitting on the edge of my bed too late into the night thinking. What did it all mean? I asked the riot grrl for some books to read, then read them. A real education, I had been wrong about lots of things. I'd been an asshole. I changed - I started to look outside myself. Grateful for this music, the introduction to it, and the door it opened for me at my lowest point. I got it. Years later I'd smile ear to ear to hear my young daughter sing all the words to Julie Ruin's "Girls Like Us" and "Run Fast", in tune and on the beat, her cadence and flow on point - girls are really cool. I tell her, "You never have to act nice, you just be you, no matter what, ok?" She rolls her eyes, and says "OK, Dad." My daughter is more important to me than me. Now I know what love is. Thank you to my riot grrl friend, and thank you to Kathleen for this powerful song.
@@ripwednesdayadams thank you for your acknowledgement. its hard for me to admit it, but until I heard those songs I'd never really thought much about what the world looks like from y'all's side. I got all fired up and went to band practice and forced them to listen to Bratmobile I think, and they were listening to Morbid Angel maybe, and they looked at me like I'd turned into Fluttershy the winged horse with the rainbow hair. I felt pretty good about that.
“So I'll stay awake almost every night A pen in my hand and in the other a knife 'Cause I'd rather be scared and fight back Then be some dick's maid, babe or wife” That line was a gut punch when I first heard it at 15. I’m 30 now and sleep with a bat under my bed.
Does anyone know who says the words "do you remember when we were young and impressionable and taught to believe everything the great white father told us?" at the beginning?
Does anyone know where the quote at the beginning comes from? "Do you remember when we were young and impressionable and taught to believe everything the great white father told us? I would really appreciate it...thanks!
I really don't like this song, partly for its subject matter but also because of its instrumental. However, on the subject of covers, I will say I think M.I.A would do a good job of covering this.
This album changed my life when I found it three years ago.
Found it in 2006, sure changed my life, made depression bearable
The clash sample at the end. 💯

Good pure messages like this know no time and anyway, so sorry to say it, but too little has changed since then
Seeing this in 2020 is so sad
2020 dude :0 Still relevant
Hello 👋❤
RIP all the white victims of police brutality who get ignored by the media because they don't fit the false narrative of black victimization.

That was beautiful to read. Reminds me of my first bf in hs. I made him mix cds with riot grrrl songs and he loved them.

Well, now she's married to a Beastie Boy who sang a song (Brass Monkey) about roofying girls. Life is crazy.
She was sampling!! Jeez (I Luv)!
low tech brilliance. reminds me of liz phair's cassette stuff. minimalist but powerful.
tomitstube or PJ Harvey with her guitar at the hotel. I dont remember the name but it's a different version of one of her album
Awesome ... Will never be confused with the Foreigner song ...

Who said the quote at the start of the song?
Is this on spotify ?

Production is for the weak so this album belongs to people like me. Art is often not for the masses.
Doeeew
I hope I never make a girl feel like this song
I guess it'd be different if they thought we were him

Wouldn't it be cool if grimes covered some of her music? :O

+Virtual Blaze I understand, But she did all this in her bedroom with a crappy device...
The subject matter? Uhh it’s an actual issue. Or are you a police officer or something 🙄
