The train from Flam to Myrdal costs about 40 Euros one way. In Myrdal there is a cafe (Cafe Rallaren) you can rent bikes there , it costs about 35 Euros. You go down with the bike and leave it at the train station. We were real careful when biking on the hairpins, we literally walked down them but afterwards it is easy and amazingly enjoyable. We went with the first train which was at 7.35 so while we were biking down we saw very few people. This is a 'must-be-done' adventure!!

You can also rent bikes at the café at the top when you get off the train. They had plenty of bikes for rent.

In my opinion it's better to buy a one way ticket from Flam to Myrdal and then pick the bikes up at Myrdal. You can leave them in Flam whebbyoure done

I agree, that's much better way. People in Cafe Rallaren (where you rent the bikes in Myrdal Station) are really helpful, and they give you a brief about the route, what to do and not to do. We rented bikes there last week and had a 4,5 hour bike ride fo Flam, I believe I'll remember that for all my life.. Enjoy it..

Is this section doable with a touring/gravel bike? We are planning a bikepacking trip in September and would like to do the Finse-Myrdal route with our gravel bikes. Any advice is welcome!

This is beautiful! It will be my first time in Norway and I would love to do this. Can you tell me which company you booked with? What was the cost for this trip? Thanks!

Visit Flåm has more information about packages, train tickets and bike rentals. This is a direct link: www.visitflam.com/en/se-og-gjore1/pakker/flamsbana-og-vandring/
We think you get all your answers here. It is also possible to walk the same route if you have enough time.

I as wondering if this is doable with a 8 year old. My daughter is used to cycle since we live in the Netherlands, but she's not used to cycling in the mountains at all...

There are some very sreep serpentine turns in the start of the route, but it is possible to walk with the bike the steepes partt, or use the amazind zip-line down to the first flat area.. From here it is gravel road the next 2-3 km passing through a dark tunnel (200m). Then it changes to asfalt/tarmac for the rest of the route. In total it is over 20 km, mostly downhill. Two small hills. At the end of the route you have to be careful again with some turns where it is very steep below (and severe accidents have happened). So, it is not the, easiest run and you need to have full control of your bike the whole time. We would propably not bring kids along before they are a bit older (12+ at least).

@@Allthegoodies thanks for the quick reaction. I also read somewhere that it’s not recommended for under 12. I let my daughter see the film and she was saying herself that it wasn’t for her. Pity for this summer. .. or well, maybe we’ll need to come back 😋

Is the route easy to-be-located? Will we get lost there?

From the train platform in Myrdal, you have to go all the way to the end (towards west) and you are on the start of the route, then you follow the only way (and the river) towards the valley and you are on your right track. After a couple of minutes you reach the first descent which is very steep. Here are a section with serpentine turns which should be «conquered» slowly on the bike or walking down beside it depending on your skills. After these turns the route is very nice, like described in the video.

Is that possible to finish it within 2 hours?Thx

The train takes approx. 1 hour to the top, and then you have one hour to ride down. You can reach it, but then you should prebook train tickets and bike rent. If you stay at Fretheim Hotel, they might help you.
If you start at Myrdal with a bike, you will manage it within two hours. The start is, as the video shows, a bit steep (downhill). The rest is almost only easy downhill, except two small climbs.
