    Any reason in particular that you are hand sanding instead of throwing a sandpaper on a pad on the polisher? I’m about to polish my first board and every other polishing video people use machines to sand before polishing. A lot seem to use machines on the hot coat too but I hand sanded with much better results than I did when trying the machine. Thanks for these awesome videos!

      Do you mean wetsanding? I find it to messy with a machine, may give it a try again next time. Also I don't want to burn through the hot/gloss coat, hand sanding takes longer but I get better control.

      Yes, wet sanding by hand vs machine was what I meant. I’m ended up doing it by hand last night like you showed. Though it took a long time I liked not having to worry about issues like burn through.
      I really liked how you explained wet sanding, how/why it works. Yours is the first video, of multiple I’ve watched, to talk about this. I have never wet sanded before so I appreciated the explanation.
      I was blown away by how much the sand paper stuck to the wet board at times! Does it stick when machine wet sanding or at those rpms does it not stick? The first time it stuck to the board I was very thankful it didn’t happen with using spinning machine.

      @@Dylangj08 Glad you were successful in wet sanding and my explanation helped. Yeah totally the sand paper can really stick, holding at an angle really helps, I found the machine doesn't stick too much because of the torque of the polisher but it can move the board around so some grippy mats on the stands is really important. Maybe the next board I'll used the polisher for wet sanding and see how it goes and show it. Thanks for raising this :)

    Hi Andrew, I have enjoyed watching every part of this video series. I have never made a surfboard before but have a blank for a 9'6" sat in my workshop ready to go. What's so cool about your video series is that I can now see the stages broken down and don't feel intimidated by the process. If my board comes out half as good as yours I will be so pleased. Thanks for the series, I look forward to the fish build - my wife is considering what she would like if the longboard is succesful (likely to be a fish/mal).Thanks again Dave

    Andrew, I really enjoyed your video series. This was very comprehensive, educational not to mention extremely helpful. I have been surfing since I was six. I spend a lot of time in the waves, however I have never attempted to make my own boards. All my boards have been shop purchased by local surfers. I have a few time splurged and ordered custom boards. I have grown up with the sons of old shapers, Terry Martin and Danny Brawner both shaped and glassed for Hobie Surfboards.
    I made the comment to a friend " I've learned more about shaping and glassing a surfboard from a guy who lives in Canada, than I have from all the Shapers I know or grew up with in San Clemente."
    I am looking forward to shaping my first board, now that I have watched your video series. However, my first attempt will be a little more adventurous. I am going to attempt to build a hallow core wood board.

    Nice job! I would propose next time, you should glass your 3D printed fins! I have done it and they work fine for my sup.

    Andrew, Swell Composites in BC sells both Marko EPS blanks and Arctic Foam PU blanks - same as used by pro shapers (eg iirc Pyzel). Of course the challenge is shipping and it is cheaper if you buy multiple blanks. Not sure where East Coast shapers get their blanks... Would you go with polyester resin over PU or stick with epoxy? There's a cost to strength trade off, but some other pros and cons also...
    Longboard looks amazing!

    You might want to try standing further back on the tail as you try a turn - ie. lifting the nose out of the water to stop it from catching quite so much. Epic looking board and another great build mate!

    Nice job! I watch all the parts and it makes me think to build my own. Just a suggestion regarding the 3D printed parts to make it last for ever. You should print them flat to make them way stronger. You have to cut them in 2 piece and glue them together but it will hold your weight. Just an idea. :)

    Hello everyone, I have a question ware to get the foam to build the surfboard.
    Thanks.

    • @AndrewWorkshop
      @AndrewWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Look around at your local hardware stores or check industrial parks for companies that make and cut foam, if you are looking for just the foam. If you want to get a surfboard blank, check online for surf suppliers.
