One little note I want to mention because of Lipsey's coming out with the 632 UC in .32 H&R Mag, well two things really. One is that a lot of people wonder why it's not in .327 Federal Magnum, and the reason is because it's built off a S&W J-Frame with an aluminum alloy frame. The .327 Federal Magnum is a 45,000 PSI cartridge so if that were to be made in .327 Federal, it wouldn't take too many shots and the barrel would blow off the frame, so in order to make a J-Frame in .327 Federal Magnum it would have to either be in steel or scandium aluminum alloy, which the latter is a $1,000 revolver even without Lipsey upgrades.
The .32 H&R Magnum is a 21,000 PSI cartridge, very similar pressure to the .38 Special+P at 20,000 PSI MAX pressure so the original alloy J-Frame is limited to about what a .32 H&R Magnum puts out. But the other thing I want to mention, is that Buffalo Bore has a .32 H&R Magnum+P that has basically the same exterior ballistics as the .327 Federal Magnum in a snub nose (due to the excessive power loss the .327 Federal loses in a short barrel). This means that in a 1.875" S&W J-Frame, you can still safely achieve seemingly .327 Federal Magnum exterior ballistics at a pressure that is likely 23,500 PSI or in that vicinity, so roughly half the pressure of .327 Federal Magnum.

I do get a lot of comments collectively on my .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Federal Magnum videos that these cartridges are basically worthless because ammo availability is not the same as 9mm or .38 Special. I thought I would share my take on comments like that.
One of the first thoughts that comes to mind, is that it's a revolver. It's not a rare semi automatic pistol caliber where you have to test various HP loads and find out which ones run. You also, in general aren't trying to master the gun in terms of practicing failure to fires, malfunction drills and all of that. It's a revolver, it's going to run! That takes away about 75% of the need to acquire large quantities of ammo in my mind. Revolver shooters are just built different, if you can shoot one well than you will also shoot another one of relatively similar cartridge power/recoil the same.
So my conclusion is that any competent revolver shooter doesn't need to shoot a high round count in a revolver like this to become proficient with it - you can still reap the positive benefits of these calibers for defense. If a revolver shooter is new and is still learning, than a .32 H&R Magnum is probably not a good choice, UNLESS the new shooter also has a .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver of similar style and size to practice with. Like a Ruger LCR .357 Mag and Ruger LCR .327 Federal is the same gun more or less, about the same weight. There are plenty of .32 H&R Mag loads that have a similar recoil impulse as standard pressure .38 Special and several .327 Federal loads with similar recoil impulse as .38 Special+P loads, so you can practice with the cheaper .38 caliber ammo that matches the .32 caliber of your choice for recoil.
In my mind there's no reason to overlook cartridges like .32 H&R Magnum, because face it - you know as well as I do that the type of person needing lower recoil like .32 H&R Magnum, is not the type of person that also shoots a lot of rounds of ammo. Having low recoil protection for people with recoil sensitivity, or keeping/carrying a .32 H&R Mag for protection where you need to shoot a lot of rounds to become proficient, can be worked around. If nothing else - .327 Federal and .32 H&R Mag revolvers also chamber and fire .32 S&W Long, which IS available everywhere.
Remember kids when you buy a .327 Federal you are getting 3 free guns which means you save money over time! whooo!
I wonder what percentage of revolver shooters also get into reloading. Ammo availability shouldn’t be a concern for a reloader.
Speaking to the reloading aspect, of you can get brass you can reload it! A few boxes of 327 federal and it's off to the races! I don't think most shooters can handle a little ruger lcr with 327 full house loads! It's a handful!
Yeah, .327 isn't all over the place like 9mm. But in my 327 S&W I seem to shoot better than my 9mm semi-autos most days. Dry firing at home to keep basics intact and enough range time to keep me dialed in on the gun and ammo and it's off to the races. I love the videos you have been doing on these smaller, not so common calibers. Keep up the good work!

Alas, the US Post Office will not handle pistols or any ammo, and "porch pirates" are a threat to UPS and FedEX delivery, but you can rent a temporary UPS box for secure delivery at their stores while you work. I am retired and live in a big apartment building with insecure indoor lobby delivery, but with free internet package tracking from UPS or FedEX I can get a projected time and day ahead of time, and quick internet notice of delivery for me to scramble down to the lobby. I said I was going to test this is a 'proper ballistic test', not that Clear Ballistics is more proper than other methods, in fact most people would say organic ballistic gel is more proper, but what I meant is that I have never tested this .32 H&R Magnum ammo in my current testing protocol. I shot it through bologna/MDF into water jugs two times I believe, and shot it through bologna/MDF into Clear Ballistics one time. I had not yet done my current protocol which I informally called a 'proper ballistic test'.
When you said 25% less recoil did you consider that your .38 Taurus is a heavier all steel revolver? So its maybe even less felt recoil.
@@Gieszkanne Yes. So in reality, this particular .32 H&R load probably is about 50% less felt recoil than a typical .38/.38+P is a closer weight revolver.
How did you validate your MDF board to rib bone? Did you test against rib bone for comparison against MDF?
Clear ballistics gel is an invalid soft tissue simulant. Bullets behave differently in clear ballistic gelatin than in typical soft tissues and properly prepared and calibrated Type 250A ordnance gelatin.
You do realize that the cracks in the ordnance gelatin, which you ambiguously refer to as "damage", does not equate to damage in live soft tissues? The cracks simply record the temporary cavity and do not represent tissue "damage".
So glad to see you still out here pushing them .32 Mag's!

I have wanted that one for some time. It was the gun that Federal had Ruger make specifically to design the cartridge off of. It's to the .327 Federal what the 1911 is to the .45 ACP.
Ran across a Ruger single-six about 30 years ago in .32 H&R magnum , used, in like new condition at a local gun shop. The gun shop owner almost begged me to take it off his hands for $100. I passed on it figuring the caliber would quickly become obsolete. I've remembered that gun many times, wishing I had took the chance.
Haha. I wasn't 21 until about the year 2000 but I do remember even 15 years ago, a lot of stuff was cheap. Bought a Ruger Single Six convertible in 2010 for like, $280 or something like that. Now they are over double that price new.
@@GunSam Would love to see what kind of wound channel you might get with some full wad-cutter .32 H&R handloads. I suspect they would be pretty impressive at say 900-950 fps.
It IS obsolete from the get-go compared to a 38 special....You're shooting a damn snubby up close....38/357 in a wheelie...45 acp and 10mm in semi-auto.. 30-cal (300 AAC, 308, and 30-06) 12 gauge pump are all anyone needs.

I Put our Ultimate Carry K-frame today w accessories etc. U tested 95 graim Federal went deep....curious about 85 gr Federal if it expands through mdf if lead is soft enough to squash on bone or not? Also the 60 gr double tap. I'm still a bit on fence w .32.
I tested the 85 gr at one point, but I do not remember how well it did and if it was a gel or water jug test. What I do remember is it was maybe only 850 or 900 FPS, and then I bought the same 85 gr XTP that Federal uses for that load, as they use a Hornady bullet in that one for some reason, and hand loaded that to whatever the book told me, and if I recall I got something like 1,050 FPS and I may or may not have tested it in the gel. I will have to look back. The cool thing about .32 H&R is it all rests on Buffalo Bore's load ultimately. Their .32 H&R Mag+P matches the exterior ballistics of .327 Federal in a snub due to the .327 Federal losing so much power in a short barrel, but their .32 H&R Mag+P is much lower pressure. Even Buffalo Bore claims it can be used in ANY .32 H&R Mag revolver except for the original 1980's H&R brand revolvers.
Your videos helped persuade me to get into .32. .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum, and .327 Federal Magnum are really nice cartridges.

I do like your take on the .32 HR mag. So much I looked into one. Rare and expensive ammo.
It's just that the ammo manufacturers that make it, like any less popular round - have to retool or add to their constant flow of 9mm to load it. And because of the hassle, rather than running 9mm daily and .38 Special weekly, they run the odd stuff like .32 H&R Magnum, or .38 Short Colt, or any number of rounds not purchased by a lot of people, maybe a day or two out of an entire year. Handloading for it is very easy though. I threw out there brass without thinking about it, but I got hundreds. The .32 caliber bullet is super easy to find, so loading up 50 rounds is like $17.
How about a big match-up with all the .32 H&R Cartridges you have someday? Keep up the great content.
I honestly do not have any. I could handload some, but factory ammo is difficult to get all the varieties that exist.
The 32 H&R did just as good with less recoil and 1 round more. Its a nobrainer.
Good test. I like both calibers. I will say though that I only carry 38 special with +p ammo. I carry an alloy 2” 38 daily. I always enjoy when you do these tests.
If you had to choose one self defense ammo for 32HR what would you choose? Critical Defense, Federal 85gr or BB 100 gr Hardcast? Thanks
My only concern about the .32 H&R Mag would be finding it in stock where I am. Also, my street experiences w/the .38 keeps me carrying that round in retirement. All that said you have given me food for thought Sam, good info.

How loud is a 32 HR Magnum ?
Most cartridges with a Magnum designation are loud compared to their non magnum siblings.
It seems like I never see a magnum fireball from the 32. It looks to be efficiently burning the powder charge.

I agree, Sam, the big takeaway is the reduced recoil of the .32 and the ability to use it quickly and accurately. TBH both of these loads are wimpy in my book, but my formative years involved Cooper’s Short Form and emphasis on momentum, bullet mass and bore area. If I had to stop an attacker I’d want the wallop of a full house .357 but those are no fun in small guns. That .32 H&R is very nice in a pocket gun.

Hey Brother, I'm glad you were feeling up to some testing. This is one I really wanted to see, since I've been on the fence for some time with eventually switching from .38 special to .32 hmr. The extra round, better shootability which translates to better accuracy, & effective terminal ballistics - what more could one want from a snubbie? Lone River even has a coated wadcutter in.32 h&r which is supposed to shoot like a laser from the new Lipsey j-frames.

I don't know if you've ever done this before, but I'd like to request a video of 45 ACP 230 grain JHP vs. 45 ACP 185 grain JHP, either all Speer Gold Dot or all Federal HydroShok, or something along those lines, maybe SigSauer JHPs. I was just wondering which would perform better in your standard tests. Obviously the magazines loaded with 185 grain JHPs would be easier to carry around, especially when you're talking about 13 to 15 rounds per magazine. If you've ever accidentally dropped a 15 rounder of 230 grain on your toes, you'd know what I mean. 😉

I really appreciate this video and this test. Your videos have gotten me into small frame revolvers. I am really looking forward to Lipsey’s 32 magnum J frame. I also want to mention how much I appreciate you shooting these revolvers and pistols, at the end of the videos at different distances. In my opinion, I think 32 magnum will be the perfect cartridge in a J frame revolver.

Really curious how the 60gr double tap 32mag ammo would do in your tests. Have seen 1 video of it shot into just ballistic gel & it preformed great. Full expansion, 13-14inches of penetration.
Same here Sam...all the online guys use the same Core program all had it listed as the 75grain you tested which did great but the sku could tell they were 60 grain which they corrected.
Couldn't find any .32 H&R ammo last month when home. Good thing I reload.

This was incredibly helpful. Thank you. .32 softer shooting, still good terminal performance, and in some wheel guns you get an extra round with it. In a lightweight LCR or an airweight J-Frame that felt recoil is a big factor for many shooters

Thanks. After a good 3rd round of antibiotics, I think I got under control whatever had me. I know what it was, was cat scratch fever which no one gets but the immunocompromised state I am in caused me to get it. Truth be told it almost killed me. My mother wants me to name the outside cat that lives on my porch that scratched me "Killer".

It's better than a .22lr so it's a better option for someone who just can't deal with more recoil than that but taking into consideration the limited expansion, relatively slow speeds and shorter penetration it's not something I would recommend to someone unless they absolutely couldn't handle more than these. I don't see the appeal otherwise for it as a defensive cartridge.

Couldn't agree more. .312 is the optimal bullet size when comparing recoil, penetration, and expansion. I too load H&R. 6.5 grns of CFE pistol, and a 85 grn XTP gets me around 1280 FPS out of my LCR. Recoil is negligible. BTW, Ruger just released the SP101 327 Mag with 3" barrel again. Get it while you can. Still waiting for Henry to start making the Big Boy again in 327.
At 75 yards it looked like the .38 was hitting low... You aimed low with the 32 and it hit about feet low.
Man I was disappointed that the Lipsey's was .32 H&R and not .327 FM. Guess my SP101 4" won't be getting a S&W cousin soon.

Hey check put chiappas LTL bravo 1.50 its a less lethal and it make byrna look like a toy for half the price .50cal 44grain aluminum balls at 400fps ice been shot by mine plenty of times and it isnt a toy and a race shot would put down the toughest of men
The H&R mag round really makes the .32 viable. On the last .32 shot it sounded like it took 1/2 second or more to hit the steel.

Thank you Sam, for an excellent video. Much appreciated. Your testing, and comparison, of the .32 H&R Magnum is extremely helpful in evaluating shooter's options. I have a Ruger LCR chambered in .327 Federal Magnum but carry the .32 H&R Magnum round and a S&W Model 12-2 Airweight and carry Double Tap's 140gr Standard Pressure Hard Cast lead round. Both are great options IMHO. Thank you again from New Mexico.

I'm doing this while driving so it might seem choppy. My father passed away. He had A32 HR magnum. I had a 38 special. We bought them at the same time. Guess which one I sold when he passed away. The 38 I handload so 32 H&R magnum is a good round.
Have you ever tried pulling the red polymer out? I’ve gotten great results, so much so that I don’t understand why it’s put in. Maybe for hard mediums?

I would say basically, yes this is probably the best ratio. The .22 WMR is really close, but you need 3" or 4" barrel to achieve this energy level. For it's size, like a 2" barrel I think the .32 H&R Mag power to recoil ratio is probably the best you can get.

I have the Taurus 605 and the Taurus 327 Federal and basically they are the same gun. Also have a 605 Poly, which I really like but it doesn't match the 327 federal as the steel 605 does.

Thanks Sam. Good review. I like bigger... I'll stick with .38 Special for my snub nose... though I have +p handloads with 140 grain Lehigh bullets at about 1000 fps. The .32 H&R is a great round for folks that need less recoil - and it will still do the job. You were trying hard to help the 32 along lol.

.32 S&W Long ammo is relatively easy to find. I can't speak for all areas of the country, but here in MI it's at all my local gun stores at maybe 10% more per box than .38 Special. With .32 H&R Mag, you're unlikely to find that ammo at physical stores and with .327 Federal Magnum, you might find a couple varieties at the stores that have it. My logic has always been, it's a revolver - how many rounds do you realistically need to shoot to know it will be reliable?
Actually, I have a Ruger lcr 22 LR and I justify buying the 327 by saying I can practice more with the 22 LR Ruger keeping ammo cost down, and keep the 327 for carry… makes sense..
Great comparison. Looks like starline has 32 H&R brass in stock for under .20 cents each. That should be fairly inexpensive to load practice ammo for, especially with cast bullets. I'll stick with what I have, but might make a great carry for the wife. Definitely a step up from the 43C in .22lr she's carrying right now.
Hi gun Sam. As always awsome real world info. People a better served with a revolver that they can handle. Loud bangs and no hits dont get you anwhere. I learned this in the army. When you hit what your shooting at the enemy gets nervous. They just fire and dont hit much. We did. God bless gun Sam. 😊
I think I saw the same Lipsey's promotion you're talking about. I was excited but kind of disappointed I really don't think you need to beef up a 32 h&r mag to handle recoil like they're doing with the G10 grips. Ultimately I really wanted to see Smith & Wesson bring back a 327 Federal magnum.
I think the issue is alloy J-Frames are super cheap to make. In order to do .327 Federal, S&W would have to use whatever frames they use for .357 Magnum. I would estimate going up to .327 Federal might add $250 to the price tag VS a .32 H&R Mag revolver. I just think it's an even harder sell when most people looking at these small revolvers don't know a lot about backward cartridge compatibility, then you got gun dealers with young employees knowing just as little, making up random misinformation. That's just my thoughts, I could be wrong about sales not doing well, but it seems like a hard sell. $500 on a cool snubby that is less common, maybe, but $750 - the only people spending that are the tiny amount of experts who know what they are getting into.
One of my several local gun stores stocks .32 H&R Mag JHP ammo. I stopped in today and noted they had Winchester, Federal, and now Hornady.
In my search for a "summer gun," I picked up a Charter Lavender Lady in .32 H&R Magnum, a few boxes of JHP, and a few more boxes of .32 S&W Long for target practice. I'm chuffed that I don't hate myself for getting this little gem!

I too am confident in the .32 H&R Magnum with Critical Defense loads! I have a stainless three-inch Centennial with a really smooth trigger, which I will NEVER sell, and it just disappears in a front pocket. IF YOU CAN, could you someday test some HOT ammo in .32 H&R Mag? There is a LOT more power safely available from several cartridge makers! I have fired some Buffalo Bore hot hollow-points and found ZERO damage to my revolver. There is a bit more recoil and a lot more noise, but still completely controllable, and not that more costly. The original specs of the cartridge were deliberately under-loaded for really cheap, weak steel "ladies guns" like Harrington & Richardson and New England Firearms. Those are history now, and modern guns with better steel are quite capable of much hotter loads in safety, with a disclaimer to not use in old guns. Even Gold Dot might come in .32 H&R now!..............................elsullo

I am a fan of the 32. Caliber cartridges.
Most everyone knows you can shoot not only the 32 H&R magnum out of a pistol chambered for same but also you can shoot the 32 Smith and Wesson long as well as the 32 Smith and Wesson. And in a pinch you can shoot 32 ACP.
Of course, if you just buy a 327 federal magnum revolver, you can shoot all of the previously mentioned cartridges as well.out of the same gun
It pays to reload for all of these cartridges.
When shooting the 32 S&W shorts and longs the recoil is nil.
Great for plinking and muscle memory.

I got a taurus 380 revolver due to the availability of ammo choices and the lack of availability of 32 caliber ammunition in my area. I've never found a gel or water test with this gun or any gun with such a short barrel (1.75") but have the feeling it should be comparable to the H&R round. I've gone back and forth between using Hornady and FMJ flat nose for this gun. Just depends on the day. Some days I think, a Hornady round wouldn't expand so better to use the fmj. Other times I'm like, yes it will and start carrying with Hornady rounds again. I go back and forth.

always wondered about 32 mag. thought about the charter arms pro for a while, but .... i have a few 38s, taurus m82, m85, s&w 10, gp100 (357 but whos counting) a bunch of dies and projectiles. would take a lot for a carry option to go 32 mag. i guess i could get a solitary 32.
I think a comparison between 32 long and 38 special would be correct for the time they came out. 32 HR mag is a better comparison for 38 Plus P because they were upgraded rounds to be better self defense cartridges. Just like 327 Federal Magnum versus .357 Magnum would be a decent comparison.
Sold my NEF 32 mag 15 years ago. Couldn't get ammo and was very expensive if I could
I just wish they'd give us 2.5ish inch barrels. Only slightly increasing overall size, but ballistics are going to get significantly better for a small tradeoff.
Just wondering if as we know a 327 revolver is probably the most versatile gun available with it being able to chamber 32 short and long 32 magnum 327 federal magnum and 32acp but I'm wondering if it can load another available round,
30 super carry with a moon clip or something similar,
30 super carry is pretty available and as its not super popular decent deals are likely to start becoming available and maybe even close out deals,
It's also decent ammo and has good fps,
To make it a really popular ammunition which it really should be they need to stop loading it in 9mm as a primary and make guns like the single stack diamond back db9 gen4 but make a stack and a half mag in 30 super carry,
That gun is extremely thin as a 9mm but in 30cal with a custom mag made for 30sc they could get a 10 round stack and a half in pretty much the same size gun just like with the sig365 moving on from single stack,
Who would be interested in a 30sc if it was a stack and a half in a gun about 3/4" wide, basically considerably thinner that the current 9mm micros but with 10+1 as standard,
I think that would interest buyers over putting it a 9mm gun?.
Narrow pistols hurt the hand a LOT more than wider ones do in recoil.................elsullo
I hadn't heard about the Lipsey's revolvers. Hopefuy the will submit them for testing so they will get on the Kalifornia risger (which is a total scam of course- it has nothing to do with dafety and everything to do with power and control, and limiting our choices). Anyway, a couple of years ago you started making we want that LCR, so it is on the list. If course i would mostly be shooting H&R for practice ammo, so these tests are useful
I snagged a bunch of 60gr .32 cal gold dot bullets and am hoping to develop a 32 S&W long load that preforms better then the 4" 32 acp that Lucky Gunner got

I was initially excited about Lipsey’s release. My location though makes obtaining .32 anything difficult. So far, all I’ve seen is four boxes in two stores locally (one .32 short, one .32 S&W, and two .32 long). Hopefully things will change in a few years. Would be nice to see more .32 H&R revolvers marketed. It seems to be an excellent caliber based on your videos.
I see .32 S&W Long in most physical stores I go into and most online stores. Only thing with that is the recoil is so low it's like shooting a BB gun. Not good for getting legit practice in.
both good rounds, I wish the .32 was the talked about round for the short barrel. but good luck reloading for it or buing it compared to .38
not bad. sometimes revolvers get extra round.

I did notice you shot the 32 more accurately than the 38 special. May be the only real fact that counts. Hitting your target under great amounts of stress.

If you want a 6th round in .38, go the Colt route. Only slightly larger.
