I just watched your video shooting old school and new school .357 from a 4 inch and realized this HST .327 did just as well ( except for the black talon) same penetration and expanded a bit larger, from a 1.8 inch barrel!!? What the heck? That is crazy.

I'm still pissed that Ruger won't offer the 3" LCR in .327 and that they don't make hammerless 3" LCRs. They have all the parts...they could literally just assemble what I'm talking about.

It has a very strong cult following, I too wish it would become more popular, but here in America 38/357 has been a marshall caliber for over 150yrs. The 327federal has a very steep path to climb. Especially since 32h&r seems to take half the market for 32 caliber revolvers. We can thank lipseys/s&w for continuing that trend.

Now if you went a hair bigger than the N frame/Redhawk size revolver cylinder, you probably could pull off 10 chambers, but we also have to realize the normal operating pressure of .327 Federal is 45,000 PSI, so I would imagine gun companies would be hesitant to have chamber walls that narrow. I don't think that I've ever seen the HST fail in any caliber. I've been wanting some for the 45 acp for ages but finding HSTs in standard pressure loads is like finding a squach in the back yard. I can find the +P rated ammo on line pretty easy but because my pistol has an aluminum alloy frame it's not rated for +P loads. I might break down and get a couple boxes of the +P loads. I don't think that a mag full will hurt the pistol anyway, just like a cylinder full of +P rounds won't hurt a standard pressure 38 Special pistol. Most gun manufacturers build their products to handle a few higher pressure rounds because they know that some of the people that own their guns will probably shoot a few hot rounds through them. And since my life is priceless, I'll take the risk.

Nothin' wrong w/ your shooting , Gun Sam . The ammo seemed to perform to text-book standards , and I can see why you choose to carry that little snubby . You're great with it . I own a Ruger "Single-Seven" w/ a 4.62" bbl which I on a blue moon carry , and I think I'll get me some of that Federal Hst as its carry load . It should offer even more expansion from the longer barrel .Yep , as usual , GREAT VIDEO !

I also carry an LCR 327. I stocked up on the 85-grain Hydra-Shoks. I shoot them very well. Felt recoil is on par with .38+p from the LCR 38. (Of course, the difference on fruit and jugs is dramatic.)

I have a .32cal mad by H&R after I get the horrible trigger worked I plan to explore 32's. BTW 5 out of 6 with a 2in at 75yds very impressive. If I remember Mass State Police have a standard of 2 rounds at 75yds in 2 seconds from draw with aa 4in. Pistol. Time not a factor 5 hits at 75 with 2in. Scary good shooting!

I have always heard people talk 2" VS longer barrels, quote more sight radius with longer barrels and all of that. I personally have never seen that when I shoot. Maybe it's just my eyes but a 2" barrel VS a 6" barrel and the sights line up the same for me. I find grip size to be more of a challenge when it comes to long range accuracy more than anything.

  • @327SixShooter

I love my ruger lcf 327 as well, its my most carried gun and id never get rid of it. But in addition to it, I feel like I need an sp101 or maybe even the new taurus in .327 to take full advantage of the caliber. The taurus 327 is comparable in size to the lcr, but since its all steel its 5 ounces heavier. Id like to get the sp101 but they must not make many of them because they are extremely rare.
As far as the lcr goes, I think ill stick with the .327 85 grain HST for it. Theres no doubt that this round is way better ballistically. But good shot placement beats good ballistics. And shooting rounds like the gold dot and this one out of the lcr take away half the advantage that a .327 mag has to offer. Yeah, the recoil might be milder than .357 mag, but in a gun as light as the lcr, its not by very much.

Looks like a very good load. I eas guesstimating it would get around 1300 fps. I have been interested in an LCR in 327 for a couple of years, mostly because of your tests. I wouldn't mind the 3" 38 either, and i would love a 3" Kimber K6 (you see the pattern there?). How about a couple of comparison tests? Maybe the 327 vs a 357 snubby (you could even try the Win USA 110 gr load, for a baseline). Maybe try a compact 9mm with good ammo, HST or Gold Dot. But focus on revolvers a bit. Appreciate all your tests.

Back in 2021, I decided the 327 was the round I would want-for both CC and home defense. However, NO gun shop I tried, whether online or in person could get the ammo or the firearm. One shop owner (I really trust) told me this difficulty would continue for several years.
I live behind the Iron Curtain in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey, where it already takes five weeks to simply purchase a gun, so God knows when I could even see an available 327. This kind of bureaucratic quagmire makes my pursuit of a 327 futile.
I have had two Ruger LCRs-one in 38 and one in 22LR. These DAO snubbies are designed for close-in use, not accuracy, especially at 75 yards. You did quite well all things considered. With a three-inch LCRx your accuracy in SA would likely be more than satisfactory.

Looks like it might be time for a pocket holster upgrade. There's a few kydex ones with nice pronounced "hooks" for snagging your pocket so you never draw it with the gun. The Aholster Company Backbone pocket holster has hooks that can grab front or the rear of your pocket. The Vedder Pocket Locker has a hook for the rear of the pocket and an optional thumb shelf to help pop it off as well. Might be worth looking into
