- Destiny 2's Lore and Story featured an exotic mission called "The Whisper." This mission rewarded us with the Whisper of the Worm, an exotic sniper rifle with a long history in the community and narrative ties to the worm god Xol. Xol, The Will of Thousands, now lives on in this weapon and dwells within the heart of the Whisper of the Worm. If you go to Io and return to the mission you can still hear his voice.

I did something similar, though I’m a decent sniper, I didn’t care for the perks Xol offered as a weapon so I discarded him upon receiving him and switched to a basic sniper.

I really wish I could see Xol's reaction when he realized that his grand and mighty scheme to bargain the Guardian into embracing the sword logic resulted in him rotting away in the Guardian's vault for years on end 😂
Xol isn't actually Whisper. The Thousand Wings ship lore, i.e. the ship you get from doing the heroic version of the Whisper mission and completing its challenges, says, almost literally:
"The [gun] is not the god, it is an instrument of its will. And when we wield it, what are we in turn being wielded by?"
Whisper is like one of Xol's fangs. And when we wield it, Xol wields us.
I have no idea how Xol literally being whisper became so widespread a myth when the awesome taken Hive ship explicitly says he's not. I was hoping Byf would mention it, since its important. But for some reason I am apparently literally the only Destiny player who's read that ship lore. Its insane to me.

Honestly this weapon's lore in Forsaken and bugging my clan mates is what got me immersed in the lore. Good to see it back again!

Nokris becoming a lightbearer would make so much sense
If I remember correctly savathun devoured nokris's essence that's how she knows necromancy
That would literally be like sinning and being rewarded for it in the Hive’s eyes when considering the sword logic. Though I’d argue that Kelgorath would make just as much sense and irony, given that he’s just as reoccurring as Taniks was. 😅
@trentonanker1744 Savathun made a deal, teach me necromancy and you can join me and feed off my tithing. He was weak and desperate after Oryx gave him the boot.

Savathûn and Nokris traded information, Nokris traded knowledge of Necromancy while Savathûn through Quria taught Nokris about controlling The Taken.
While the player Ghost believes killing Nokris at the end of interference was his definitive end...the only real evidence of that is that Nokris has not returned.
Thing is, he's died many times before and managed to bring himself back. Now it could be with the knowledge Savathûn gave him that he finally became am Ascendant Hive. Afterall the final battle with him was in a fake version of Savathûn's Throne World.
That could've been his Throne World, in which case him dying in it would've been his final death.
Though since, to my knowledge, this hasn't been confirmed nor denied, it's hard to say.
For all we know, Nokris like his fellow necromancer Fikrul could be lying low.
Heck, since Xivu Arath has been kicked from her Throne World, Nokris could attempt to take it...or the other vacant thrones.
I think in Kelgorath's case, he's just obnoxiously stubborn. Let's hope he's perma dead now that Xivu's power has been crippled

Mostly. It was Nokris, son of Oryx, that Xol was bound to before he became Whisper.

Have you heard the Tragedy of Xol, Will of Thousands, I thought not, it’s a not story the city would tell you but a Hive legend
He turned himself into a gun thinking it will further the sword logic well it did but eventually he was betrayed by all around him then eventually found himself rotting away in the vault
Ironic. He was able to draw others from the vault but unable to save himself from it.
Byf's "lore implications" videos are great, literally a pillar of D2 at this point.
But something special happens when he takes a (seemingly) completed lore thread and gives it the full storyteller treatment. Like ancestral stories being handed down around the campfire.
You know, first time we heard about the Whispers on IO was actually from Cortana in Halo 2.

What I am curious is about is what a BUNGIE dev mentioned during one the ITL streams.
He said the Taken are up to something that "lorehounds" might be interested in. I was thinking we'd get that with the returning Whisper mission but...I haven't seen anything noteworthy yet.
Though apparently Tormentors are now appearing during Heroic Taken Blight events.
Those things get heroic?
Maybe we'll get the explanation as to why the white central eye of the taken will turn into the resonant orange that we saw in the final shape gameplay.

@@dravendarkplays9607 Entering a blight gives you a 5 sec buff that means you can shoot the big ball above the blights.Enter a blight then leave it and start shooting the ball until buff runs out.Keep repeating at the 3 locations and it will become heroic

Honestly I could see necromancy as an affront to the enemies they killed too. Seeing as how most higher ranked hive have some strange honor code

After completing the whisper mission I sat on my couch trying to do my best Byf connection. Xol will be put to good use.

The Fractal Grove youtube channel a couple days ago posted a video of Vince, part of the Whisper design team at Bungie back in the day, reacting to the revamped Whisper mission. He goes into really interesting details and how he was approaching the lore of the Whisper mission.
so idk if you have seen my previus comment but there is a secret room inside the new social space where there is a banner hanging of the guys that brought us the skimmers and banners and supplies of the dead orbit and cabal
Lysander and the Concordat faction my guy. Which after Lysander was banished was turned into the Future Warcult lead my Laskmi who was probably Mya Sunderesh in Exo form if my memory is serving me correctly from Byf's Veil lore videos.
I wish you made a updated version of the complete story/lore of destiny from the very beginning. I love the lore and wish we could have this due to how much more knowledge we have on the light and dark

As a side note, kinda disappointed that Bungie didn’t bring back Xol for the revamped Whisper Mission, it would have been so fun to fight the big ol’ noodle to prove ourselves capable to him. Oh well, maybe Someday we’ll be able to fight him again.

I find Nokris and necromancy vs the Hive hatred of it interesting. We’ve seen Savathuun and even Xivu Arath use it. That undying Knight in a Titan Adventure for example, or Kelgorath who just kept dying and failing and yet Xivu still kept bringing him back in new ways, first as a Wrathborn, then a Darkblade, then a Taken, he kept returning, like attempting to sharpen an eternally dull blade. But I guess the necromancy hate ended with Oryx’s death, Savathuun never cared for the Sword Logic constantly trying ways to circumvent it’s downside, eventually she gave into death allowing the Traveler to choose her or not, she was.
I love Xol's voice. It makes me wish he had been a more prominant villain. Hes much cooler than Calus

5 Whispers and a Div is an easy 1 phase without ever reloading or running out of ammo.
It's such a shame we don't have the Will of Thousands strike anymore. That strike was such a spectacle.
I think Nokis and Xol strike mission is coming back with probably new mechanics and difficulties like legendary and master to get craftable gear and weapons

For the Ruinous Effigy catalyst quest? Damn that brings back memories I used the hell outta that gun when I got back in the day. Then it bugged out and the ball slams didn't count as kills so I would finish a strike with like 30 kills when I had over 150 and put it in the vault lol

I noticed they kept the vex gate in that let's you look into the Vault of Glass, super cool detail, but I was wondering if there was every an answer as to whh those two gates are linked in the first place? Why would anyone need to have gone to the Vault and then Whisper mission and vice versa?

They need to buff its damage or give it back infinite ammo on precision chaining. Discord already gives infinite ammo to succession now so it’s a small sacrifice.
I thought Black Spindle came from a Taken Eliksni (a Kell?) and not the Daughters of Oryx? Or did the daughters gift the sniper or something?

Nothing to worry about spoilers, I was there when the Whisper of the Worm was first debuted. Later, I was doing sherpas on that secret mission, helping others get the very same Sniper Rifle that I wielded at the time.

Is anyone else not that interested in the craftable whisper? The perks aren't bad just not my cups of tea. Would a damage perk have made it too strong? Iv seen people hoping for precision instrument and I want to know how much damage it actually would have done with it. Outbreak though looking goood lol
You know, looking back on past Hive lore, especially more recent stuff, with season of the Witch, we really did prove the Sword Logic wrong. Did we use it and embody it then? Yes. Have Guardians been enacting the Sword Logic for years? Yes. But, the reasons we fight, are different, why we fight, is different. Using the methods of the Hive, and Darkness? Not that alone, we also used light, and other forms of power. In this, we embodied complexity. The bomb Logic. In a sense, we’ve proven time and again, even in season of the Witch, aginst the Hive, Taken, and Witness: that bomb Logic, is greater. Even sword Logic, used with other methods, by us Guardians, transfigures into bomb logic. This is why I believe the Witness’ goal, it’s vision, it’s Final Shape, is flawed. Even Savathun, may realize her folly, given potential Hive may desert her brood. Maybe we will come across Hive calling themselves, “Krill”. Having forsaken the Sword?
