- This video focuses on my father, Deane Gunderson, and some of his row crop farming developments in the 1970s. It also includes a few scenes of other people in the rural neighborhood between Rolfe and Pocahontas in NW Iowa. Deane was a third generation Iowan from that area. He received degrees in mechanical and agricultural engineering from Iowa State College (now University) circa 1940. He then worked for John Deere Company in Waterloo before he and his family moved back to the Rolfe area. In my perspective, one of his more renowned projects was coupling two 4-row cornplanters together to make an 8-row planter that cross-checked the corn in the early 1950s. Unfortunately, I did not begin to take home movies until the late 1960s. This UA-cam posting is an edited, digital version of those movies. One of Dad's friends, and also a friend of mine, Emily Anderson of Story City, but formerly of Rolfe, created the music for this piece that was originally shown at Dad's 90th birthday party in 2009.
This is back when farming was work as I remember it. Too bad all the small farmers were choked out of business in the 80s.
Back when times were better and simpler.
back when the rutine was keeped in order, and things wasnt changed every 2 seconds,70's was the golden age of all decades!
Wonderful thank you....The farmers are the back bone of this country!!!!!!!
My Grandparents were also farmers in the 1970s in NW Iowa. A different world in farming then. :)

Thanks for your interest. I apologize for the delay, but I had a hard time finding the "approval" button. I am not sure of the models, but I believe my father, who created the tandem tractor didn't have a lot of choices for a big and versatile tractor in the 1970s. This way, he could have a heavy tractor and two small tractors to use for various field crop tasks.
Grew up in the area all though I don't know your family. Nice video thanks.
