1970s farming
Переглядів 148 тис.14 років тому
This video focuses on my father, Deane Gunderson, and some of his row crop farming developments in the 1970s. It also includes a few scenes of other people in the rural neighborhood between Rolfe and Pocahontas in NW Iowa. Deane was a third generation Iowan from that area. He received degrees in mechanical and agricultural engineering from Iowa State College (now University) circa 1940. He then...

Thanks, David. I am now at least a decade older than my parents and their friends when they gathered nearly monthly in these 1970s movies to play bridge, eat, and socialize in various ones of their homes. I believe the story is that the group went for some 40 years (perhaps the 1950 to 1990s) without electing officers but having sort of a pattern of deciding where the events would be. I doubt that any of my friends would ever dress up so much for a card party in this era. It always seemed a big deal for the women to prepare and serve unusual and better food than the other women. It would be interesting to have a sociologist see the movies of the card night and point out other observations I may never have thought of. Oh, yes, and the guests, I think mainly the men, smoked.

My Grandparents were also farmers in the 1970s in NW Iowa. A different world in farming then. :)

Sorry for the delay in responding. I know how to post videos, but I find it hard to navigate the comments section. Anyway, the church is in the small town of Rolfe, Iowa, that is losing lots of population. Has been for years. I say it's part of the result of large-scale agriculture with lots of corporate inputs but little place for lots of farmers or farm workers. So the Methodists and Presbyterians in the town eventually merged into the Shared Ministries of Rolfe, and they could not afford to keep both buildings. So the new congregation voted to tear down the Presbyterian building. The space is now a bare lot with good turf.

Thanks for your thoughtful insights. I always loved the M Farmall since my grandfather had that model plus his horses. But I realized that some people blame the Dust Bowl on the Farmall. My hometown of Rolfe, Iowa, seemed to be around 850 people for a long time, but by the accounts of one on-line source, it is now under 600. I suspect it may be even less than that.

This is back when farming was work as I remember it. Too bad all the small farmers were choked out of business in the 80s.

@maxnewellmz8025656 Thanks for your interest. I apologize for the delay, but I had a hard time finding the "approval" button. I am not sure of the models, but I believe my father, who created the tandem tractor didn't have a lot of choices for a big and versatile tractor in the 1970s. This way, he could have a heavy tractor and two small tractors to use for various field crop tasks.

what two tractors are combined at 2:07? thats a pretty cool machine but why didn't he just buy a 7020 or something
