As previously said, I was born in 1962 in England. My Dad was a 6' ex WW2 soldier. He was a very kind & loving dad, but you knew when you'd over stepped the mark by the look on his face. He only hit me once when I swore at my mum. He never had to hit me again. Just a look was enough. When Kids realise that they can do anything they like without any negative consequences & threaten to call the police even if the parents shout at them they turn out to be the little shits that we have running around like gangsters.
My Parents were amazing & I thank them for the discipline and good behaviour they taught me.

@coot1925 - in a way some kind of circle within society, and how it reponds to changes, but also education itself (especially basic philosophy which long ago was part of a lot of Uni courses, 6 months only but it was enough, where sometimes you had to argue multiple points, from different point of views).
All in all: "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times."

On a different note, Mom was the wielder of the slipper and the wooden spoon. If Dad ever felt the need to get involved, which I can count the times on one hand, we knew our miserable souls had been forsaken. My brother cried for two hours waiting for Dad to get home from work one time after hearing the dreaded phrase, "I'm letting your father handle this."

In my case, my mom hardly took a role. All my dad needed was an open hand, and only a few times before dumb kid me got the message. Just look at kids and even young adults now. It shouldn't be a hot take that corporal punishment needs a comeback!

My mom whooped me and my sister's ass with a wooden spoon as children of the 70s-80s. Sometimes the wooden spoon would break because she was so mad. We both grew up okay. My sister and I would cause all kinds of trouble as kids; theft, vandalism, setting fires, etc... We earned our whoopings. Kids today don't get a big wooden spoon broken over their asses and it shows.

Nobody makes Conan laugh like Bill Burr and Norm Macdonald, but Bill Burr is a lot faster and more prolific with his appearances on TBS era Conan.
