Jimquisition: Limited Collector's Complete Edition

- The heroic Jim Sterling is back once again to champion the rights of those too weak to champion themselves, and bask in the very palpable gratitude that he most assuredly deserves. This week, he describes how the game industry is tying a noose around its own neck while trying to blame everybody else for its problems. Sterling is pretty brilliant, really.

ABOUT JIMQUISITION
A show in which a fat British man who wears sunglasses indoors rants angrily about the injustices of mankind, interspersed with MS Paint doodles of videogame characters doing terrible things.
And now, it's 2015, and the Collector's Edition of Halo 5 is as much as a consolse...
Funny, 3 years later we are all still complaining about the same things
No one ever learns
Nope
_Let's all laugh at an industry that never learns anything, teeheehee._
First of all, thank you, Jim! You're awesome, and I like your perspective on games and the game industry.
Now to the point: I rarely buy games when they're brand new or at full price. Thanks to Steam I've encountered the Luxury Syndrome, where I have way too many games to play and frankly too little time to play any of them. I think I've mentioned it before, somewhere, I think it was another Jimquisition video, I've been watching a lot of those lately, that I like to devote proper time to a game. I don't want to sit down for an hour playing a story-based game, which most of my games are, I want to sit for 3-5 hours, and get the feeling that I'm sinking into the game, being engulfed by its story and characters. If I have just one hour to play, I'll end up staring a whole lot at the time, and not letting myself be absorbed by the experience. This makes gaming very difficult, even now, while I'm still single, and have barely any obligations except work.
GOTY Complete Editors Exclusive Day One Pre-Order Season Pass Pack Edition w/ Exclusive Day One Pre-Order DLC is becoming quite common these days.
I see these kind of thing as a scheme to get new fans, but it's punishing to loyal one
Hiker Wolfspaine True, but he is also right in saying that this, in the end, is just digging a hole for yourself as a company. For example, nowadays unless it's a game I really want I usually just wait for GOTY editions. Why pay 40~60 bucks plus dlcs, so around 100 bucks or more, when you can wait 1 year and get it all for 40 bucks? It punishes the costumer because this way he had to wait to play the game but it also punishes you because he ends up getting the game at a reduced price.
And what if you already own the game and have some dlcs? maybe it's cheaper to buy the GOTY edition than to buy the dlcs you are missing so you end up with 2 games? Makes no sense to me.
Bartosz Skorupa Yes in most cases you do get a reduced price, but there's a few that don't follow that rule and force you to either get the dlcs you are missing or get the full GOTY edition.
Bartosz Skorupa Well Dark souls 2 did give you a reduced price if you had the game and wanted scholar of the first sin (the upgraded version) and there's a few others that right now don't come to mind.
Still like I said I usually wait for GOTY so I may be wrong about the frequency on which it happens.
Btw, happened to me too with saints row, batman and borderlands xD
I like how Skyrim calls is "Legendary edition" it doesn't give a feel of "you need this" just that "you WANT this"
In the Middle East, I found the Legendary Edition cheaper than the normal game!
Thanks, Jim. Thank You for you.
well since he wants gratitude, thanks you Jim for taking time to educate us and remind us we need to thank god for you
Thank you Jim, and thank God for you.
Steam not charging your for content you already own when you buy a bundle would be a good start. GOG does this so it's not like it breaks the laws of physics or anything.
zar athustra I wasn't talking about Humble Bundles and I wasn't talking about extra copies :)
GOG sales sometimes feature bundles where you get a special discount when you buy the whole bundle. If you only buy certain items from that bundle, you will get much less of a discount. However, if you already own items from that bundle, you won't have to buy them again but you still get the bundle discount.
Compare that to Steam where you also often get a special discount for, say, game-plus-DCL bundles but they don't give a shit if you already own the base game and half of the DLC. It's take it or leave it. So what I usually do is leave it ... but the full-priced game. Instead I wait until such bundles come out.
I do believe Steam does this now, reduces the price of a bundle if you own some of the games in it. (Source: looking at the "Valve complete pack" right now; logged into a steam account that owns half the games it only costs 50 dollars, and when I log out the price jumps to 90 dollars)
Thank god for Jim
Seriously, I can't even begin to understand why anyone could blame someone for waiting for lower prices. That's just being smart and patient. If you have the option, why the hell not? Even if you feel like you need to support the industry any way you can you can't demand other people to feel the same. In the world we live in today just the fact that they are paying money for it is support.
If the industry/retailer has to lower the prices to sell enough that's their problem. That's economics 101.
thanks for everything you do Jim
The discussion begins at 0:58.
I loved the original Borderlands so much that I purchased two of the DLC before even completing the game. Later, I purchased the remaining DLC packs. Shortly thereafter, Gearbox released a "Game of the Year" edition which included all the DLC. Needless to say, I didn't break my neck to buy Borderlands 2 right away. Same thing happened with Mortal Kombat... and the Batman: Arkham series. It just doesn't pay to be an early adopter in this industry.
Thank you Jim Sterling.
I just plain love this man.
True, absolutely true I learnned this lesson quite early.
Thanks Jim!
Thank you Jim, thank god for you.
Thank you jim
As soon as I hear that a game is getting DLC, I stop, cancel my pre-order, take the game off my Amazon wish list, and wait for the impending "complete" edition. I have enough to play in the meantime.
THANKS JIM.
Thank you Jim Sterling
I never bought games when they were first released or consoles for that matter. I often bought my games used or waited at least a couple months before buying a console. I took a chance and only preordered once (Kingdom Hearts 360/wtf days) and regretted itXD
i usually dont spend more than 10 bucks on a game, i have only bought a few games priced at 20, steam sales sure come in handy, i also always wait for the final edition of a game
Thank you Jim
Thank you, Jim Sterling, you're the man.
This could also be a symptom of bad economic cycles. People are learning to be more frugal that and or they simply don't have a spare 60$ to spend that that time forcing them to wait.
I've always been a tight ass and those few times I've splurged I've regretted it. I only buy games on or near launch day is I REALLY REALLY like the franchise, and I mean REALLY like.
Same here. One of the reasons I started to get out of consoles and back into PC was that console games being $60, all the time, no exceptions, was in my mind, really stupid, and not sensitive to people who are in, essentially, the downfall of the occident.
Movies are $10
Songs are $.99, Albums are anywhere from $8 to $15
Games are $60
Lets just say that we're not sprinting to go and spend $60 on every stupid release.
Thank you Jim!
And with so many games getting released while unfinished lately, I have even less reason to by a game anywhere NEAR release date (and forget pre-ordering, not gonna happen).
Thank you :)
much love
Whoa, that's a nice comeback to the guy!
Thank you.
Thanks Jim.
Thank you Jim for opening our eyes to the harsh evil world. Thank GOD, for you.
what you said about price slashes reminded me about how my friend mac got watch dogs a rather new game for ten dollars along with assassins creed 4 for ten dollars
Thanks Jim! :)
This is so relevant for watch_dogs.
I am proud to have predicted Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. Yay for not wasting quite literally $90 on the inferior version and it's 3 dlc's!
THANK GOD FOR JIM STERLING
That is something that a lot of people fail to grasp: that even the best of devs/publishers are NOT your friend, they are NOT on your side. The only people they are trying to help is themselves. That's not to say that they are all evil and you should never buy any games ever, just...keep that in mind whenever they pull out the pity card.
Thank god for you Jim!
Thank you jim!
Thanks Jim. That is all.
This. A thousand times this. I waited so long to get street fighter IV, like crazy long, the next week they announced Super Street fighter IV. I swore a lot.
yes he does have a big fan base your right
Thank You Jim for all the good stuff You ever did. ;)
thanks Jim
Thanks Jim :D
Escapist Jim, you should do a video about the triage of terror in games- Lives or Stamina systems, Pay to Win, and you can't forget, Free to Play.
I know a game that does all of that, quite a few actually, but the first one to come to mind is Brave Frontier.
thank you jim, you are my heroe
So... thanks dude!
I heard people used to hate jim when he started off. How the fuck can people hate hate Jim, Jim is fucking awesome!
I don't mind "Complete" or "Game of the Year" editions. As someone who doesn't feel like paying for Xbox Live, I find it more efficient to just install the DLC from the bonus disc or whatever. Besides, I usually good a good price for trade-ins on the standard edition. I intend to do that when Bethesda inevitably releases a Skyrim GOTY edition.
thank you
Thanks man
Thanks jim
very good episode. true, very true ...
Brilliant depiction of an unfortunate scenario.. ;)
Ugh.... thank you Jimmmmmm.
Remember, there's always mods for your old games on ModDB.
No need for buying new games when you can just download a mod to make your old game (almost) new again.
thank you :)
great video you made all the right points
yay jim is my friend
Preach Jim!
Simply saying. You are diretly contributing to every single problem in the gaming industry, and you're going out of your way to do so
thankyou
i hit the like button before the video even started
Hey, game publishers? How about you offer an Eternal Complete Edition on the various digital distribution services? This would be one where you pay once up front, and get everything which will ever be released for that game. It's all automatically added to it and available just as part of the update process. No need to track DLC releases or the Game Of The Year edition.
Yo I ain't afraid I'll box you son. I'LL BOX YOU.
Still just as relevant with the release of MKX.
I make origami swans. I usually leave them on my victim's corpses. To be honest I was trying to make x-wing fighters but they were too hard to make. I wanted to be known as the x-wing killer but instead I'm known as the swan killer by the plods, which just makes me sound like some kind of sad case that abuses animals in the park. But hey, you make games!
The most hilarious example is Europa Universalis III: Complete, that only includes 2/4 expansion packs for the game.
Think Oblivion, game of the year edition's worst. only includes the 2 major expansions, not the additional 7 additional dungeons and homes
blasterjosh the 5th aanniversarydid add those. but honestly the 3 major expansions where awsome the homes and stuff where just meh
thanks... there
thanks ;)
Even renting is lamed by online passes. I just wait for the bargain bin.
Forget Romney and Obama - Jim for Pres 2012
Enslaved never stood a chance.. U think it ultimately sold nearly half a million copies, but it should've been 40 bucks from the jump.
Couldn't agree more! I stopped buying into this crap 2 years ago as it does my head in. I love Borderlands the game, played it more than most games this gen but the fact that the FULL Edition comes out costing less money than the DLC I bought, on top of the full priced retail game originally is incredibly annoying. Thank the universe for old gen consoles and gaming! Phew!
Hmm, an understandable point, but there's nothing really wrong with DLC itself, it's how it's used that becomes a problem.
I hated how Halo 4 had different armors you get from different retailers, or the Fotus armor being from an exclusive painted Xbox 360. No way i'm buying *another* xbox 360 just to get an extra armor.
Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition, is a fucking movie. Now we have movies doing it
Movies have been doing it for a long time, using the term "Director's Cut".
I am a hugh fan af yours
Jesus this guy is big.
Oblivion 5th year anniversary edition for 10$. Pirated and played for 5 years then bought it.Win-win situation.
Legally if the company views the game purchase as a lincense then the consumer should be entitled to all that lincense entails. I.E. when they release more then they should give it too you. World of Warcraft is a great example with their content patches, as bad as they may be, its ethical.
Well.. you see.. the thing is.. Pirating is NOT theft. When you steal you take something from someone else, THEY no longer have it. Pirating is more like someone makes a copy of your car.. then drives that copy away.. why should YOU care? You still have your car. If the price was right and the value there "pirating" wouldn't be an issue. However as the prices are silly and there is very little value people just copy it as opposed to purchase it for themselves.
Look im just gonna be blunt- I'm a hardcore Bethesda fanboy and I think they've been on the right track for a long time, and their "GOTY Edition" thing is smart, cuz there's always people willing to buy it at the start and buy the dlc as they go along, and then there's people like me who want the whole package at once in a single bundle, and they know people will buy it at 60 anyway. I sincerely consider Bethesda to be the polar opposite of EA and Konami, the Holy Grail of Game Developers/Publishers. Yes. I understand that they've made mistakes in the past- HORSE ARMOR ANYONE?- but at least they fucking LEARNED from their mistakes and their dlc frequently adds up to an entire 'nother game's worth of content. Not to mention their lack of drm and the complete absence of microtransactions in most (if not all, i think it's all) of their games. And let's not forget the high quality of their games, their devotion to their fanbase, and the fact that they did a FUCKING FREE-TO-PLAY RIGHT! As far as I'm concerned, Bethesda is the best publisher out there. -End rant.
Honestly? I've learned several things since that comment- the bullshit they pulled on Obsidian for Fallout New Vegas's metacritic score, and now this- I'm seriously rethinking my stance.
i hate GOTY editions, soley because they sell them so damn late, but with all the DLC which normally Costs So much more if you bought the 1st release version that didn't come with them, which just re-enforces the thought that the Actual Version that comes with Everything is just the Real Version, and the 1st normal version they sell at Stadard $59.99 Price is a Watered down version with Alot of Features removed and withheld behind pay-walls... looking at it now it's like a Freemium set up, you can Wait for the Real Version that comes with everything, or you can Buy all the DLC that your missing now for Extra Cash out of your wallet.
Project Tyrasa It´s shit dont fall into that, I was smart with Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim and waited for the full editions, it always comes guaranteed on store shelves.
WHY DOESNT THIS HAVE MORE VIEWS! ...they're probably on bieber arnt they.......i dont wanna live anymore ;( - and thank god for jim
This right here is why I RARELY buy a new game...game of the year editions and complete edition games are almost always the better deal...or just wait for game prices to go down...I don't have the gata play it first like some friends of mine have.
I skipped Mortal Kombat X because I know that the Komplete Edition will be released sometime next year.
Isn't MKX broken on PC?
Not anymore, I think.
+The GameAddict I think all support was dropped.
If Samsung did that, and i could steal an appliances from the comfort of my own home, I damn well would.
0:17 i want that sword
How? It doesn't stop you from using it correctly.
That's what I do every time these days.
You are the source of all problems in the industry then.
weapon/map packs etc. should be in the game i dont think ainbody likes getting half arsed games
"Don't feel bad"? I never did. I'm not paying top dollar to be ripped off. Very few games have ever earned full price from me.
