@@Silkroads733 There is not a single artist in the modern world who doesn't have an ego or isn't fuelled by money. Music and artists are products of their societies and they either mirror that and reflect the truth or they're propped up like dollies to sell a lifestyle or ideals to the masses. There's this misconception about Grime, the UK and music. I'd start in saying American influences resonate across all corners of globe as an economic and political drive to expand markets and as tool of software power whereby people are manipulated to think and behave in ways that serve corporations and suit power structures. Getting to the crux of it, there's inability to see the UK in a historical sense as a colonial power that spread English language, colonised the Americas and the West Indies, creating cultures that interlinked between cities. Caribbean culture influenced Hip Hop, Jungle, Grime and many genres. The Caribbean communities across the diaspora from Toronto, London, Bristol, Kingston...all share aspects of culture. Although it is seen purely as American, the Americans fail to see how Sound System culture influenced Hip Hop and their culture. Now getting on to Wiley, he was ghetto youth who had a hard life, he sold drugs, was sliced across his face by drug-lords and was all about the life he spoke about, it wasn't an illusion or false reality. East London and Bow where Wiley is from is one of the most socially economically deprived areas in the UK if not Europe, it was the home of the Kray Twins Eastend gangsta who were connected to the Irish and Italian Mafia in US. Not to mention the level racism faced by Wiley's generation in the Eastend where the Nation Front/BNP beat Black and Asian youth. East London has high level gun crime, drug problems, unemployment, and illiteracy, its youth are destitute and have limited prospects, especially with the Caribbean community. Someone like Wiley was inspiration to those young people growing up.
Wiley has so much vision and understands markets and his talk of territories and localities are spot on in relation to it. There is a language barrier and accent barriers. He's a clever man who isn't credited enough for grafting. People don't know the volume of hours this legend put into doing shows on pirate radios, producing music and playing at raves, driving to record shops and selling records from his car boot. Nobody has reached that level of grafting. Sorry no one maybe the digital age has made it easier. I am not saying others don't graft but Wiley was and is a workaholic.
I watched some footage of Wiley in like 1996 and when he did a show with So Solid Jheeze Wiley like 2002 has been active for so long. Respectfully, we don't need to have to force ourselves on Americans. Mainland Europe and as far as Australia have much more in common with us

I completely agree. I’m a DJ & producer and I play in Las Vegas. I’m from Manchester, and I’ve played in America for a good few years now but there is a huge language barrier. After all the time spent there, there is still misinterpretation in conversations and it’s so easily done because we are where we are from. Slang, or general conversation it doesn’t digested like it would be back home in the uk.
Just speak English without slang then mate. Language barrier ? We speak the same fucking language lmao. So just use proper English with English words instead of ‘wag wan fam yeah ya dun know calm safe’ like most degenerates in England 😂

Wiley 100% has a valid point. Central Cee has been killing it and is arguably that guy in the UK right now but even then, guys like Lil Baby or a Meek Mill can come to the UK and they'll still be looked at as the top dogs while they're here, everyone is going to run to their shows, play their music etc... Central Cee in the U.S is almost just a very successful rapper from the UK whereas an artist like Lil Baby is a successful rapper period when he steps over here.
The same level of impact a Lil Baby would have over here, CC isn't necessarily going to be on that level in the US. Maybe someday he will but right now he isn't one of those, Drake comes over here he can pretty much take over the city, CC, Skepta or even Giggs goes over there they're just another great and successful artist from a different part of the world at this moment and time. For us, because we're here it looks bigger and better than it actually is & when I've been over there CC does have fans, they seem to bring up CC, Skepta or Giggs if you're from the UK but for the most part, no one from the UK is the equivalent in the US to any of the top US artists coming over here.
Coming from such a small island (uk) and making waves across America you need to applaud Cench. He's known across a good few states, and into Canada, it hurts for Wiley to properly respect this kids grind.

He's saying people knowing you and fully bussing in the states are two different things. You can take Drake, Meek or Lil Baby for example, if they come over here they're that guy while they're here, you have a lot of our top artists damn near turning into little bro.
If our top artists go over to the states, they're just another successful international rapper that's successful at home but they're not necessarily going to rub shoulders with the biggest and best talent there, they're not shutting down cities and having everyone come out. When Meek or Drake for example comes out here, everybody with a name is pulling up and fans are flooding the shows, streets and after parties.

Doom does carry through certain intonation but you have to be dialled in to recognise it.

Wiley knows exactly what's going on. It's no different than how New York used to dominate hip hop in the 90s and back then no one was trying to hear rappers from other states because everyone from California to Illinois was trying to sound like New York. It's not until places like Atlanta came out with their own unique sound and took over the mainstream that the New York dominance ended. LA, Chicago, Miami, Philly, Toronto also added their own sounds later on. The consistent theme being that all of these regions developed their OWN sound that sounded like nowhere else. Innovators get the fans and recognition. If you're just a copycat from somewhere else, you won't get anywhere. London used to have that 90s boom bap sound like New York back in the early days and they didn't blow up. You need to do your own thing and sound original. Wiley is correct, it's pointless making an attempt to cross over to the US. You don't understand the American psyche if you think you're going to convince mostly Black Americans who barely know where Europe is on the map to try to like something foreign sounding. The only reason Canadian artists get accepted in America is because their accents are so similar. This is only for urban music, White people in America are far more open minded, that's why British rock, rnb or pop music blows up globally including in America. It's the Black audience that doesn't like foreign sounding accents for their genre of music.

Bottom line is… you ain’t making it in the US comparatively to your peers in America. Like Central Cee isn’t about to go sell out MSG with his 27million monthly listeners. But you can be damn sure that Cardi B, J Cole, Lil Uzi could and probably already have while they currently have about the same monthly listeners.
The only people that have come close have been bands, solo singers (like Adele) who have made an absolute scene in the states and continued to sell records for years after their releases

If you're talking about Adele and other non urban UK artists, tons of them crossed over from the Beatles to Coldplay. It's the Black American audience that doesn't want to hear non American accents.
The British have taken every single genre of American music and successfully exported it back to them with rap music being the ONLY exception... Let that really sink in. England has produced mega superstars like Amy Winehouse, Adelle, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton... the list is endless. They haven't ever produced one rapper who has ever even come close to cracking America. Wiley is right. The Yanks just do not care for British rap music. The British have been rapping for decades... If it was possible for a British rapper to crack America, it would have happened by now.
I think it’s the same as Wiley said, it’s the accent and lingo barrier. When it’s pop or a multitude of other genres, the English accent is more palatable on a larger scale and when it comes to singing there are different ways of enunciating words that can make it sound more smooth. Problem is with rap is that a lot of it is ingrained within lyricism and punchlines both of which are heavily influenced by regional nuances in language. Even flows are impacted a lot because even in the UK alone you have lots of different regions that typically speak at slightly different speeds, some accents sound lazy others upbeat.
…don’t agree with your last sentence though, there are a lot of different barriers being broken down musically in this generation specifically, plenty of people are more open to checking out different sounds from more countries especially with the introduction of streaming and social media.
This is exactly correct. The reason being that Black Americans are the most insular Americans. They barely leave their state, let alone their country. Their world exists only in the hood amongst people that look and behave like them and share the same interests. This is partially due to then being marginalized in American society. The only successful Brit that actually sang in a British accent that was embraced by Black Americans was the legendary Sade.

Maybe 50% of Americans can point out where the UK is on a map. If you're talking about African Americans, they are even more insular than White Americans and barely even leave their state, let alone the country. Central Cee isn't going to blow up in the US simply because hood Black people only want to hear music that sounds like them and that they can relate to. Wiley knows what he’s saying about the “looking like” point. Central is looking like he can crack America. Him actually doing so is a different point tho. Also to say it’s his management over him is a bit of an insult to him.
I agree with Wiley in that sense, what it looks like isn't necessarily what it is. As for the management thing, I'll be real, CC's management are crazy, I 100% get this guys point, I think Central is a great talent and carved out his own lane, has avoided most of the bs too when he could've easily gotten dragged into bs but in this scenario, I would say at the very least it's a 50/50 dynamic when it comes to importance, I would even go as far as saying his management are really the driving force. Right now, I'm not sure if there's better, people will never truly understand what they've done unless they're behind the scenes.

Skepta is well-respected in the industry period but he isn't really doing numbers there. We still haven't got a Lil Baby or Drake equivalent in the UK. Think of it like this, when Drake, Meek or a Lil Baby comes over to the UK, they can shut everything down, everyone is going to go out to see them, listen to their music etc... no one in the UK is going to any city in the US and having the same effect. They're big over here but when they hit the states, they don't really brush shoulders with any of the bigger name-talent, whereas the top artists in US can come over here and you'll quickly notice a lot of the big talent here damn near look like lil bro.

They'll become those guys while they're here, even someone on a lesser scale, they'll be able to bring out everyone with a name, fans will flood the shows at the biggest venues and pay top price, they'll flood the streets, try to follow them or track them down to after parties, we've seen this with guys like Drake & Meek.
On the other hand, our very biggest artists can't go other there and do the same thing, they won't be in the conversation or rub shoulders with the biggest artists there in terms of who's making things move right now. Everyone isn't coming out to see them. We hold US artists on a higher pedestal and embrace them more than we do our own, on the flip side, US fans don't treat our artists the same. Lil Baby can come over here and outsell anyone, strictly in the UK, you'd need Dave, Cench & maybe Tion Wayne combined doing a show to try and convince people to choose that over seeing Lil Baby by himself
In the states bring our top 6 biggest rappers, no one is going to choose to see them over even someone like A Boogie.
@Juru I don't disagree, but the point is no one says Drake is the x of Canada or the US, they just say he's Drake everywhere, no one from the UK has reached the level to where they can say they're huge everywhere. The same level that Cench is in the UK, once you move him to somewhere like the states, he's no longer that guy not even close. Move Drake from the US to UK and his status and influence is arguably even greater, the competition drops drastically.
I'm willing to bet, if you brought Drake over here for a show to do on his own and had another show on the same day where it was Skepta, Dave, Cench, Tion Wayne all doing the same show, Drake still outsells them, people will pick to go and see Drake by himself vs that crazy headline I just picked, take the same guys I mentioned & drop them in the states, you'll need at least another 6+ artists on top to make it competitive because their status drops drastically compared to Drake in the states. The point being someone like Cench is popping but his status is high here and I would argue he's at the top of the game in the UK right now, but once he goes to the states his status drastically falls and he isn't in that conversation with the top guys there.

He's right, American artists have always used the UK to top up their accounts whenever they want to tour and we open the doors for them but they don't really give a fuck about us as a market. Wu has never done a show here where all of the members turned up, even when they were all in the country they just couldn't be bothered. Have seen so many half arsed lazy artists that just wanted to get paid and go home. We should just support our own.
I'm American and agree. It's no different than when New York dominated hip hop in the 90s and no other states got love until they just ignored New York and made their own sound. You just gotta focus on your own people and others will come.

Estelle and Craig David both broke through in the US winning grammys I believe. But I think Wiley maybe exclusively referring to rappers and grime.
Thats rnb though, they're not rapping. Also Estelle was never big in the US. Craig David was but he puts on an American accent when he sings. Ella Mai is another example, huge in the US but sounds 100% American when she sings. Sade is a good example of a global rnb legend, but I'd argue her music is more adult contemporary than urban rnb. She is soulful but also very mainstream. But she definitely doesn't put on an American accent yet is still undeniably legendary in America. UK music outside of rap has always been global since the beatles. We're talking about hip hop here. The Black, urban audience in America only wants to hear American accents and topics. They'll never change.

Centrel Cee is an example of brilliant management and marketing, but he's a fad. Objectively, he's not a good rapper, and there's only so long his "look" will carry him for. Once his core fanbase grows out of their teens and wants something of substance, hes finished. He's the UK Lil Pump.

Willy's wisdom is just slept on. I think if you're intelligent you can take in what he says and get his points completely. If you're not too bright you won't understand Wiley at all. His understanding of UK rap/grime music is #1. Only thing I disagree with is a UK artist success shouldn't be matching US top artists, the bar is very different.

Wiley's right, if he goes to the USA, he would have to sound American (twang)....most Americans don't really understand British accents..especially the London slang.
Trip Hop, Jungle, Garage, the first wave of Grime all did not buss America. They all happened before social media was huge. Many Americans did not even know that Black people existed in the UK or any of our history for the longest time, let alone being aware of Black British Jamaican enthused culture....so its hard to make any of that buss in America.
M.I.A. has her English accent, shes the only artist that I can think of that is remotely related to 'rap' from England, who has buss America and other countries on earth at any point. Its a shame that no one Black has been able to do it.

The internet is changing which Black culture gets to be the most dominant, slowly eg. Afrobeats is a good example, as the Black British African population increases. Jamaican British men are unwittingly kind of socialising themselves into irrelevance with having whiter and whiter children (no shade to Mixed Race people), to the point where Jamaican culture is no longer such a dominant force of influence in the UK (its still globally influential though obviously).
