The Story of 'Get Busy' by Sean Paul

- Опубліковано 28 чер 2024
- Growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, Sean Paul Henriques fell in love with dancehall music but never imagined he’d one day become the genre’s most internationally renowned artist. After years of building a fanbase in Jamaica and the diaspora, his second album, Dutty Rock, became a make-or-break opportunity to prove that dancehall beats could transcend culture and break into the pop mainstream. He accomplished that and more with the timeless party anthem, “Get Busy”, accompanied by producer Steven ‘Lenky’ Marsden’s legendary Diwali Riddim as the track’s foundation.
VICE met up with Sean Paul in Kingston to learn about his signature fusion of Jamaican Patois and hip-hop slang, how his upbringing influenced his musical style, and the legacy of the first-ever dancehall song to top the international charts.

"The Story Of" has to be one of my favorite vice series, thank you for capturing this moment in time
I agree. I even watch the ones for songs don't really know or like. I come away with a new respect for the artists and the songs. I live in Belize and love Sean Paul, so this one was really fun. Thanks Vice.
It's the only Vice series I care about
the story of it wasn't me by Shaggy is also pretty nuts.
Legendary
I just went to the playlist, and i can only see three videos. It says that "eleven
unavailable videos are hidden". What the f**k? 😟
I was in high school when Sean Paul started blowing up. It was a great time to be young and alive man. Hit after hit after hit and always had the dance floor going crazy. Sean Paul is a legend!
Yes, agree
Indeed...good times‼️🔥
Yes those were the days
Sean Paul is crazy humble. I’m really surprised how down to earth he is, after all his success. He was such a big deal in the 2000s. His songs still get played on the radio today - on the same stations from 15-20 years ago too. I still listen to his songs from time to time.
Right?!?! Those years in the 2000s was it. I feel sorry for people who will never get to experience that feeling in today's times
Yeah Sean Paul is still a hot Musician.
He is still an original Pop Person.
He really made an Impression on the music Globe and world.
How did make into the Music Charts since the year 2000 and 2001.
@@jamesbedugraham8056 he's actually more dancehall just majority of his popular songs are more pop oriented.
@@shontelprescott3755 I like you already date me online.
Coz I am James Bedu Graham the Ghanaian Citizen since 1982.
Lenky is a genius and props to Sean for listening to advice from people around him.
The way he taught him to change up the scale mode he sings in and harmonize with his own back vocals is what really sells the song
Indeed!!!
Yeah, I think the best advice was also to not go down the route of speaking on the hardships in jamaica, he did one song called Deport them on the bookshelf riddim that hit pretty hard, but its better he did the hype vibe
This Era is unmatched. Them high school parties were lit
yassssss bihhh class ‘03❤
@@bedazzlinbeauty girl you look like only 24 👀
Yes. Them high school parties with anything Sean Paul!
seriously! i hadsoooo much fun
What I love about him is that he gives credit to the entire machine that built him. Many Artists can’t or will not do that. It’s commendable
"self made"
for real. no wonder he is universally loved
that part where Sean and Lenky just tell each other how much they changed each other's lives...so so wholesome! damn!
This “making of” gave me chills all the way through. What an epic, magical journey. Sean Paul deserves every bouquet flowers he gets, he put our Caribbean cultural roots on the map in incredible ways and made history while doing it. Legendary.
"Get Busy" and "I'm still in love with you" will forever be some of the greatest tracks in history.

"Get Busy" was the very first song I heard on the radio when I first came to the U.S from Mexico... I could not understand a word he was saying but that song is forever ingrained in my memory. AMAZING artist to this day. Thank you VICE, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and hope you continue this series.
Cant believe Its BEEN 20 years since this song dropped. This song along with everything else Sean Paul did afterwards was allways present at our parties for 5-6 years. This is a true classic of my generation. Thank you for all the good memories ❤
I love this back story so much and that song is such a dancefloor filler after all these years! I mix Work It, Hot IN Here and Get Busy into Dancing Queen with Yeah and it usually pops off
I would love to hear it!
❤
brah dont forget gimme the light

This song was craaazy when it dropped. Still is. That whole Dutty Rock album was/is 🔥
Definitely best reggae album of all time.
Classic album. This was a good time to party because dancehall had a big renaissance

That album shouldve been nominated for Album of the Year.
This turned out to be such a wholesome documentary. Big up to the team at Vice, Sean Paul and Get Busy!
I was like 11 years or maybe 12 when this song came out in my country and was like a BOMB! I remember that we tried so hard to sing the lyrics . Really blow my mind. Now Im 32 and Im hips start to move everytime i hear this song.
Absolutelly love it! 🇨🇱
This song was a huge part of my childhood. My parents used to throw house parties and I vividly remember being 8 years old and just dancing my ass off to this song. Sean Paul is such a legend I’m glad he’s getting his flowers he deserves it 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Same here brings back so many memories to my childhood aswell

Seriously. Like way before he buss on the US markets. To me, that was his best versions.
Diwali Riddim was at the pinnacle of Dancehall All those songs on that beat was uniquely mixed shout out Lenky
THE ZENITH MAN. THREE SONGS CHARTED ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 IN THE TOP 20. Get Busy being Number 1. Arguably the great RIDDIM ever
it is the best
This backstory makes the “Get Busy” song an even bigger phenomenon! It gets me busy on the dance floor EVERY TIME💃🏽 I really enjoy Sean Paul’s music and his positive vibe 👑
As a West Indian who moved to America , Sean Paul accomplishments' meant so much to us who came from a small island and to hear his music at that time. We had no representation in the media etc !! The story behinds this matches the work ethic of the Caribbean people . Prideful and talented !! We love to see it !
SEAN PAUL'S RUN???? LEGENDARY!!!!! LEGENDARY SH*T!!!!!

This song growing up in NYC was on the radio 24/7. Literally the national anthem for 2-3 summers. Song still hits everytime
Yup! I’m here wit yea 🙌🏻🤓😅
It was this song amerie why dont we fall in love lumidee neva leave you and beyonce crazy in love literally everyday 24/7
Diwali riddim is still one of my favorite riddims to this day. Big up to lenky for this masterpiece.
As a young West Indian growing up in North America having this track breakthrough was transformative to being accepted and appreciated by people around me because they finally gave some respect to my culture and background.
I’m part of the Jamaican diaspora in America. I remember on a visit in Summer 2002, my cousins singing “Gimme di Light” and telling me this was the hottest song on the radio and in the clubs. It had not been released yet to the USA and since this was pre-UA-cam, it wasn’t as easy for me to just find the song. But it was a sign of things to come with Sean Paul. “Get Busy” really was massive. I take it for granted now, but Sean Paul really did stay true to not watering down the dancehall for a global audience.
mane i feel like some serious jaamaikaan foods dayam!!!

All these years later and this song is STILL A WHOLE BOP!!!!!!

This track and 'Like Glue' are just🤌🤌
As a Toronto area Caribbean kid, the Get Busy video was like a shot to the heart. We loved it so much.
For a producer to still play a melody after such a long time deserves some credits!
Growing up in Kenya, Sean Paul was massive, and "Get Busy" ruled the radiowaves for a long time. Watching this and realizing it's actually the first time that I become aware of the lyrics in the song. All this while, the little bits of English, the beat and the rhythm were all I nodded to. Also... happy to find out it's not Judy and Rebecca but Jodi 😁😁
He came to Kenya in 2004 or so. I was so upset my guardians at the time wouldn't let me go to see him at carnivore. I was 12 😂😂😂

Being at an HBCU when Get Busy dropped in 2002/2003...man look, some of the best parties of my life! What a tune. In my workout playlist to this day
Some really great music came out during that time frame. Great parties were had across the globe to this music.
This brought me back to a very fun time in my life. This dropped around my freshman year of college. Thanks for this. Good times
Gotta give this man his props he crossed over differently! Total legend in Reggae and Dancehall.
Get Busy is a classic and I love hearing the story behind it. Big up to Jamaica! 🇯🇲
Yes, and I think the story has many untold details about the song and the riddim, Jamaica has the best music
I remember vividly this song blowing up. It was part of my teenage years. The early 2000s was a great time to be a teenager
this song is something special, whenever you hear it you HAVE to start moving. its honestly a song i will never get tired of hearing, the beat the and the flow of Sean is just crazy. thank you so much Sean Paul for this amazing song and all the people who helped you create it and bring it to life.
Sean Paul is legendary. Even before the Dutty Rock album, his tracks are10/10. Deport Dem, Concrete…. To this day, Diwali riddim can shut down the club. Any track🔥🔥🔥. Jamaica to di world!!! 🇯🇲
It’s so beautiful to see Sean and his teammates journey from such humble beginnings and with good intentions being recognized and celebrated so many years later. Thank you guys, y’all were a piece to the puzzle that captured my sonic palate early on. Wouldn’t be the musician I am without being exposed to the different Melodie’s and pockets that all these guys pioneered 🤝
Yes, I think the same about their music
That Diwali track still bangs after all of these years. I started dancing from hearing it again in this video.
Yeah, me too, my hips can’t stay still 😂

That Era in Dancehall !!!! Sean made Jamaica proud 🎉
Yes, the 90s and 2000s, we miss this era
This is so iconic! I don't think people realize how big this era was for Toronto
I thought SP was from Toronto because of the hype around this song.

On my playlists, on the radio in the car or even in public. Heaven help someone if they change the station if they're playing...
Sean Paul’s album “Durty Rock” definitely one of the greatest albums of all times! People still love it! Many hits on that album.
Being from London, being a teen in the 2000s, I’m going to say this… There are TWO albums that I saw shifted the culture in London, one of them was Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ and the other was Dutty Rock!
If you weren’t there, it’s something unexplainable but after that album dropped, there was nothing like it.
Definetely
I'm Cameroonian and I was 18 when Dutty Rock came out. It was the first album I ever bought and it was a bootleg album I got for $2 at the time lol. I understand exactly what you mean by culture shift
What about Chronic 2001

So true. Remembering this giving me so much to nostalgia.
History made! Sean Paul and his team are musical geniuses. ❤️❤️❤️

This man made my high school years unforgettable. ❤
sean paul made his mark. i was just a kid and i remember the huge influence of his music and that era in the early 00s. dutty rock was a smash hit in the city. shoutout to little x for bridging the gap between jamaica and the large caribbean community in toronto. his music is still being played at every wedding, party and event. it's insane to see how many hits came from 1 album
18:25 Definitely have to agree that this video made this song such a big deal when I was in high school because we really did have a representation of what we were doing literally every Saturday and Friday night and it just felt like we were validated in that moment so big big shout out to Sean Paul for having the vision and understanding his whole team for really helping solidify Caribbean people in cold climates lol
It was little X's vision from growing up in Toronto
I was an 8th grade junior high school/middle school student in a catholic school in Jakarta, Indonesia, when this song came up. I remember taking this song to my friends and tellin them we should dance to this for a school event, shaking my booty and all. They thought i was crazy at first, but coming out of that school we ended up not only forming a dance team but also winning dance championships in the region, using a lot of dancehall and hiphop music.
C.S.L 🤔
that's awesome, can't imagine how your school reacted
I met Sean Paul at my hotel tonight! I was working there and only said hello in my professional voice which he replied back to me!
I grew up with his songs that where always outrageous and amazing. He made my childhood great and introduced the sounds of Jamaica and Reggaeton to an African and Swedish mixed kid that never belong. Finally I could relate to something!!!
Such an humble guy! I love this documentary and I love that it gives me so much more insight to who he is a person but also artist.
TRUE LEGEND ❤
As a Caribbean person this made me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside ❤
For all you young folks out there, these songs were MASSIVE In 2005-2006. You would hear them on the radio all day long. Great times!

I can't stress how HUGE Sean Paul was in the early 2000s here in Toronto. Thank you for my making my teenage years a blast!
Also he was already well known (at least here) before Get Busy and Like glue. I think the first Sean Paul song I ever heard was with the Baby Blue Sound crew.

The fact Sean Paul is still going and dropping hits till this day
There's a stretch of amazing times in my life that Sean Paul was the soundtrack to. Such good music.
That is so relatable, at 16 I got my first car, and the first thing I did was put on Dutty rock CD and blasted all these songs
Diwali is arguably the best riddim of the 2000’s and definitely Top 10 of all time. So many big tunes came off that riddim. Big up yuhself Lenky!
I remember hearing the hook for the first time and that “spooky” voice was like nothing I’ve ever heard before. Really nice to hear the story!
Nothing will every compare to early 2000’s reggae/dancehall. I’m so happy that I have heavy Jamaican roots, small island with such great music and talent.
This was a very good time for dancehall. As a 14 year old teen in Switzerland I discovered the sound and was blasted away by it as well. I didn't understood a word but this melodies and riddims just went like honey onto my brain cells.

Sean Paul was the biggest thing ever back in the day
I think it needs more than one documentary
Sean Paul had an incredible run. Back to back bops had me going insane as a kid. Truly one of a kind
What a great humble man he is! Never heard anything negative etc. about him in the press .. no scandal, only awesome music!
Also great to see that he and his girlfriend, now wife, have been together for so long. It’s kinda rare in the entertainment industry.
He was a major part of my childhood and youth and I know I will listen to his music til the day I die.
In college, I was jamming to this album. Matter of fact, I can literally take some credit of the promotion in Nigeria. However, after this powerful documentary, I have to put more respect to this legend @SeanPaul
You are a true definition of "can do" spirit!
I am a military Officer now in the States and still jamming this Masterpiece 😊☺️👌💯
This was a great glimpse inside one of the songs that really put the whole Caribbean on the map outside of the West Indies. It did and still does the whole W.I. proud knowing that one of our own dominated the charts with a sound and vibe that just wasn't "it" or common in the Western world until it came out...and then helped revolutionize the sound from then on.
I like backstories like this. Makes me see this in a new light. It's also very impressive how so many songs were created from one beat
Thank you VICE for a great representation of our Jamaican culture through music. Big up Sean Paul!
I’m a huge Sean Paul fan. This guy was on fire in the 2000’s. Everything from “Temperature”, to “Get Busy”, among his other hits, were such a breath of fresh air and a glimpse of another culture’s music.
Yes, a great era
I'll always remember the summer this came out, I was in Toronto in spring 2003 and summer 2003 and I remember this was always on non-stop on the radio everywhere and every mall or food court, the energy this song brought to that summer was unforgettable, the heatwave along with this song in all the sweaty clubs was a scene that won't be repeated anytime soon. Sean Paul is timeless, a true artist
2003 was a great year for music everywhere
The artistic, cultural/ethnic/, and ethnographic diversity in Jamaica is beautiful, immense, and the should be talked about more. 1:38 1:43
There’s so much music out there and it’s easy to wave off “just another pop song”. But there’s really so much more behind each piece of music. This documentary series dove deep into the people and process of making 1 song, and it makes me appreciate all the wonderfully creative people who bring so much joy into this world.
A story to always remember. I'm deeply a big fan of the Jamaican Artiste Sean Paul. From the time I heard his hit from Crash Album 1998, it keeps getting better into the early 2000's.
