Hi Claire and WT community 👋,
Monday morning is always so wonderful because of Porch Coffee with you and this community. I have my porch coffee mug in hand and my Hazelnut flavored coffee. ☕️
Being in business for yourself is not easy. I am a crafter/ jewelry artist and it takes a lot for me sometimes. My ideal work flow would be no one here to disturb me, my music or a favorite movie on, and hours and hours of time to create.
Work flow can be ebb and flow, especially when you’re working for yourself. Inertia happens. Everything is on you to succeed. The struggle is real and there are lots of learning curves.
    Teresa (sp?)-
    I love your musical garden!
Some of my joys are music, gardening and puns. ❤
    Keep being amazing, Claire 👍

Hi Claire and all your wonderful gang! I have a happy set of coincidences about to occur. I just got my formal diagnosis on Thursday and was told I need to be kinder to myself. It also happens that I'm now only 4 shifts away from finishing work. It's a bit sooner than I expected but I've decided not to look for another job. Instead I am going to focus on some of my other interests, which are mainly handicrafts and make some items that might be saleable so that I generate an income to buy more crafting materials. In respect of working, it has always been difficult. It's one of the ways that I have pushed myself over the years and now I wonder how it will feel to not have to push myself just to be able to survive. Have a great week everyone!

First off, I gotta say I enjoyed that musical garden walk. As for work conditions that are more conducive to productivity for me? I have had quite a few jobs now with a variety of duties. But I would have to say in general I more productive alone. Dim lighting, quiet or constant sound helps, and access to good music is beneficial.
Been a busy week. Kiddos are back to school this Wednesday and I went back last Wednesday. Still have a handful of doctors' appointments between the three of us over the next few weeks, but once those are done, we should be able to get back on a weekly routine for a bit. Have a good week!

What a wonderful garden! Love it.
Absolutely agree that hunkering in, with a little pool of light (and a pot of tea) is the best way to get things done.
Sounds like you have been working through lots of planning. I find that's the bit that takes the longest. I'm just getting started on Etsy and have no clue what I'm doing. 🤣 The project just seems to grow arms and legs - getting packaging, deciding who to use for delivery, branding, accounts - on and on. I'm picking them off one by one.

    Hey!
Since I ordered my mug last week and not seeing the option to choose where I wanted it printed, I've received a mail saying it's being printed in Latvia, which is close to where I'm from so I think it chooses the closest printer site automatically.
As always, it's super refreshing to see how open and real things are here in the mug club.
Hope you have a wonderful week.

Good morning Claire! I enjoyed your ramblings on the business setup 🙂
I relate to needing a clear path to get stuff done. It helps me a lot to dedicate a few hours to create a flowchart or "path to victory" for larger projects. I treat that as a miniature project in itself. Having one of those helps my brain not wander as much.

My dropping in today was not random. I wanted Porch Coffee on Friday. Today. ☕ ☕. I'm 73. Identifying dependencies for the purpose of living as well as I can independently is a part of what I do. I practice DBT skills. Accepting reality has me getting how avoidance works. In my bubble. Sort of. Sometimes. Nice having coffee with you. Thank you for being here. My neighbor who welcomes my drop by visits had knee surgery and tested positive for covid while she was at the rehabilitation facility. I didn't realize I was utilizing conversation videos less as I had a real person who smiled and asked me to stay and visit awhile. I like your porch. 🎉

It was awesome for once to actually be awake when you posted at the standard time :) And was exactly what I needed to start my day. It's been a rough year. I so get closer to a mug ;) but its still a work in progress... I have a 7 year old metal bubba travel 32oz coffee mug that is getting old now and is great... But I cant find a new one to replace it. It would be neat to see one with "Mug Club" on it ;) JS
I always appreciate your more laid back (but extremely well presented) porch talk weekly. And the business and show and tell and other day to day life long experiences are priceless! Please just be yourself and keep doing what you do. Thank You!
For me self employment has always been the only way I can survive. I can navigate how I am and pick the path that looks the best. The "Status Quo" will leave me homeless. I cant be who i am in that and its not like i hurt anyone when i know. So many of us are exactly that.
Thank You and please keep doing what you do!

Best working conditions for autistics? Glad you asked!:
    1) QUIET!
    2) Autonomous / self directed working environment - no micromanagement. Appropriate level of authority and resources neccessary to meet the demands and responsibilities associated with the job
    3) Clear objectives / schedule / structure
    4) Deadlines (see above) Deadlines must of course be REASONABLE in terms of the workload and time frame needed to meet them. Frequent incremental deadlines are better than infrequent do or die ones, especially with complex projects or tasks.
    5) Control over the sensory environment - lighting, temperature, posture, sound, sights, smells.
    6) No intrusive, random interruptions - especially social chit-chat small talk type interruptions unrelated to the task at hand.
    7) Tasks that are compatible with the particular interests and thus monofocus of the autistic employee. This is CRUCIAL for well being AND productivity.
    8) Supportive rather than authoritarian management structure. Respectful and accommodating of the unique needs of each employee.
I maintain that "accommodations" like those above can benefit everyone, regardless of nuerotype. I was an architect, and worked in a variety of office environments and cultures, most of which were HORRIBLE. The antithesis of the above, and occasionally downright abusive. The best (and last) place I worked was at Walt Disney Imagineering. Disney had the most autism friendly CULTURE I ever experienced in a workplace. That was 25 years agon. It was still bad from a sensory standpoint however because of the semi-open office cubicles, fluorescent lights, intrusive office noise, etc. There were also a lot of social interruptions due to the open cubical thing. The most stressful part of working for Imagineering however were the frequent moves of my workstation, as I was shuffled from one project to the next as an AutoCAD "super user" (troubleshooter). This was coupled with the fact that I HATED AutoCAD (and still do) and only got good at it as a matter of survival.
Here's a bit of wisdom from a 60 year old autistic person who's failed to thrive in two separate professions:
DON'T FORCE YOURSELF TO GET GOOD AT ANYTHING YOU HATE!
You need to trust me on this. If you get good at something you hate, your employers will give you more and more of it! It SUCKS!!!
Do what you LOVE! It's what you'll best best at, and therefore it's where you'll be happiest and most productive. Seek things that intersect with both your interests and which are in demand in the workplace. Then be as selective as possible about the places you work. They'll be lucky to have you. Don't settle for bad / abusive / cacophonous work environments. If you have to work in such places to survive, be relentless in setting boundaries and protecting your senses while you search for more accommodating employment.
My final suggestion is to avoid to small businesses unless the owner / supervisor is a truly intelligent and kind person. Preferably autistic too. Larger corporate employers tend to treat employees better because they have Human Resources and Risk Management divisions that weed out psychotic managers.
    Usually.
Beware public or civil service type jobs. While the job security they offer might be tempting, they universally have toxic management structures in my experience, and are soul crushing. If you doubt this, pay a visit to any public school teacher break-room, DMV, or Post Office. These workplaces are all about petty political power struggles - the kryptonite of autistic people.
Again, be selective and do what you love.

Hi Claire! Love love love the show and tell!
My ideal working conditions are when I can fluidly hop between mental, physical, and social elements of my job in time blocked chunks. And to have a balance of the three. I work an office job and I'll flounder if I've been focusing by myself for too long without structured connection to my team or without the opportunity to do something tangible/physical. Also to be able to work in super intense bursts with long breaks.

I have pondered T-shirts and such for my art if I could ever condense it into the type of art people want on a shirt or other items. At any rate, knowing a bit on how it is done is cool. I love the sounds of the work enviroment. Quiet solitude is a must for me. I can turn some chill music or a video on for background noise, but must be low. And, oooh, speaking of must - Must say yay to more show and tell! Oh my gosh, Teresa! How I loved the plants and all the great twists on the names! Extra great Show and Tell this week! Fun and funny pairings of plants and bands/music. I love it! My favorite working conditions are outside but on my computer…which is a tricky arrangement 😂 (power, too much sun, rain, cold, bugs, blah blah blah!) but I try to do it as much as I can! I’ve been sooooooooo unbelievably busy at work. I’m only supposed to be 20 hours/week and it’s not even close to that. The work is good but I really don’t want to do it full time. And I haven’t found the right balance between having a reasonable deadline and a gotta have it now deadline. The latter is not my fave and it’s been a lot of that for the last few months. Ugh. Gonna take a walk with a friend and her pup this week. Haven’t seen her in a while. Got a doctor’s appointment. And then more work. That’s my week! I’m excited that you’re doing more shirts! And the more time you spend setting things up properly, the "easier" things are afterwards. :) Well worth the time to #1. have a plan #2. the whole having a "red-thread" so things make sense #3. making sure the "tech" actually cooperates. 😎 Taking this time is so worth it in the long run, but agreed it takes so much extra time.

@Mykethepsych Been reading fiction about the American Pioneer West/Midwest for a spell now. Like Zane Grey, Willa Cather, et al. It's really good stuff for summer in Texas.

I totally had to laugh about good working conditions. I literally have days that are minimally productive, offset by days that are like a mad hatter combined with a plate spinner (running around crazy, while plates spinning in the air) that are super duper productive. I know it looks ridiculous to outsiders. My family has told me so, LOL.
Best working conditions: I need to work from home, obviously. I need a window near me, but not one that I can see a lot of movement from by looking out from my desk. If I could see cars and people I would just look at them, not focus on work, unless it was a hyperfocus day. I need to tunnel down my focus to get stuff done, so I have turned my desk toward the wall. I can't have too much visual stimuli, but do need some distractions in order to get the most done. So I have videos or audio books going on in the background. But videos have to be the kind that I can mostly just listen too. The other thing that works is to have a friend come over and she does her thing, while I do my thing and we talk, but don't have to look at each other. Then we both get a lot done. We just "get" each other, so she understands my quirks. I have the light above my desk on, but not my main room lights. First that's just too bright to work comfortably on the computer all day. Second they flipping flicker. No one else can see them pulsate, but I can and it makes me feel awful. They are the first thing I will replace once the next big part of our remodel is done. If I'm having a rough day, I will put my soundproof headphones on and no audio. That usually helps. Have a good week and take care.

How can you get that idea of certain autistic traits being 'embarrassing' out of your system. Autism isn't shameful. Trauma isn't shameful (except to the abuser). Struggling isn't shameful. Self care isn't shameful. Ablism 'says' it is - stuff that. Consider yourself told ;)
I may have said last time that my opp is next week - well it's in 2 wks. Who says time blindness isn't a thing. Most of my time is spend doing or thinking about getting ready for that. So far I'm feeling like I am being listened to and things put in place (as much as they can) to care for my mental well being as much as my physical. I'm just hoping it works. Being close to home and my friends is also very different from last time where I was 1 - 1 1/2 hrs drive away from everything that was familiar to me. That's also helping.
Yesterday I visited the ward I'll be on after the opp and met with the people in change of it for a quite a long chat about what I (& they) can expect while I'll be there, see the rooms, sight's, smells & sounds etc. My therapist was with me too. I found it very helpful. Doing the same today with the surgical admittance lounge (reception). At least it's keeping my mind occupied in a relatively positive way.
Another CT scan this Friday. I hope the cannula insertion doesn't freak me out again this time. 🤞

This is just a standard note, but since it's here, it applies xxx
I regularly 'wash' my account, so if it looks like I was interested in your content and expressed a load of support, then everything just vanished.......... I promise to try to do better with this, but as things are every few days/weeks everything just _has to go_ - I very much doubt you had anything to do with the reason for that, but even if you did, I'm on your side and think you're absolutely great.
So just letting you know everything (good) I said stands. I think you're great.
(Just a standard note, sending same to all relevant parties lol got no intention at all of being here to make people feel worse lol)

This is totally not healthy, I’m sure, but a lot of my best work comes when I am already deliriously exhausted and sleep deprived. That elusive third wind, perhaps.

    Hi Claire!
    I love Teresa's video!!!
I'm getting caught up on your video as I was "out" this last week taking an inpatient mental reset from a mix of my unmasking process and reoccurring trauma but I'm doing better now.
I still haven't opened the mug I ordered last month and I ordered 2 shirts!
Could I incorporate both in my show and tell video submission? (I'll wait for the shirts to get here 🎉) 🩵

Some purchase.* As the first autist in the 東宣北米神聖教會 OMS (viz., Oriental Missionary Society) Holiness Church of North America* (a Wesleyan conference offshot from majority Methodism, and the child conference o' the 東洋宣教會 Oriental Missionary Church, a society founded 1902 at 大日本帝國東京市 ᴛōᴋʏōꜱɪ (now 日本国東京都 ᴛōᴋʏōᴛᴏ), JPN), I've a general agnosis on relational fundamentals but also a knack for audio recording. Endured multiple crashes for Audacity as Audio Engineer for 部英 English Department, 胡桃河町日系油童教會 Japanese Christian Church of Walnut Creek (CA, USA), a member Congregation of said OMS Holiness Church of North America; but execute salvage for recordings, as I did 18 August 2024 for our sermon "Citizens of Heaven." (I'm awaiting a lead scripture from Blevins Sensei.)

Good morning Claire! It's good to see you and I'm glad you had a fine week, a productive one even.. 🤩🥳 I'm not having the best days, it's kinda hard just existing at the moment.. 🥀 I've been trying to tell a few people in my life that I suspect I'm autistic and explaining why our communication is difficult at times and such, but I'm not getting good responses.. Well, they didn't respond with disbelief so I got really excited and thought this will be good, but it's not because they still demand that I'm thinking and acting like before.. 😓 Which I can't even understand because I've sent videos and explained things and at that time they say they understand, but when the moment comes that these traits are surfacing, I get shut down again.. And it hurts.. I've also tried to tell a couple of people that wasn't that close, and they just responded with disbelief but I was prepared for that.. I also found this autistic Facebook group for females in Norway, but I got rejected almost instantly, so that also kinda hurt.. But yeah, this new week might be better.. 🙏🏻
I'm on disability benefits and have been for around two and a half year now, and before I crashed completely in 2016, weighing only 46kg, I worked in a kindergarten as a child and youth worker.. But if I'm working on something, like writing stuff or something that acquires me to think, I also work best in a dark, cozy space without any interruptions.. I find it very hard to sit down and concentrate if I'm not sure I'll be left alone.. Then things will just not get done.. 😬😅
I truly loved your garden Teresa, it totally made my day to know that your garden exists! 😻🥰🌱 Perfect match with the music and omg, how I'd love to be able to walk on sunshine whenever I'd like to! 😎✨️
I watched your yarn show yesterday, my first one.. 👀 I'm not really a crafty person, so I haven't thought it would be something for me, but the glow in the dark yarn lured me in! 😇 And even though I didn't understand anything of the yarn terminology, I truly loved to see your smiles and joy/ excitement when talking about it.. 💜 I'm definitely going to watch more of it, oh and perhaps I should comment something? Is that what you meant by showing some love? 👀
I've also finally got myself to purchase a porch coffee cup today, I chose the original one even though I wanted the black one first.. Only because I'm often forgetting my coffee and need to be able to reheat it in the microwave.. 🤭 So I'm excited about it's arrival, I know it might be too optimistic to hope it'll come before next porch coffee, but at least it's on it's way and that's something to look forward to! 💜✨️
Sorry for this novel length response, apparently I had a lot to say today.. 😅🤭 But I wish you a wonderful week and thank you so much for having coffee with me/us, this is now my highlight of my week as well.. Thank you for being you! 💜
