I have had one now for a couple years. Key in on a couple things. The UHMW wheels the carriage rides in there are no bearings, so keep regularly cleaned and lubed. Secondly, the right sized chain saw is a must. Really, don’t go cheap The Sthil 660 magnum or better. 3rd - purchase the Norwood rail system the trolley rides upon, and the extension, don’t try the extension ladder route-- horrible idea, Lastly, the customer service in the shop is excellent. I called Norwood and spoke right to the shop on my questions. He was patient with my mumblings.
Jeremy, it looks like you need to tighten your height stop a little more, or use a bungy cord to keep you adjustment handle from vibrating and turning. It actually causes inconsitent cutting if you dont. Great video though man. Thanks for making it and sharing it.
Hi there, how is this setup economy wise? Purchasing price is considerably lower then other mills but I wonder about running costs with fuel and chaos for the saw. Thanks
I think I'll get one. After watching a few videos I think you need a big saw, 70cc minimum and the right chain and bar for ripping. I see no benefit to cutting boards or 2x4s as they could bought relatively cheap from a small mill somewhere, but cutting beams, slabs or mantles could be economical for extra cash.
Youre right. Thats what I do with mine. I have an MS661C and use skip chains with 10* ripper teeth and I can cut a 6x6x12 in about a total of 15 minutes. Thats all the log handling and resetting, cutting four sides and discarding the unused cuts. The cutting only take about 1-2 minutes per cut. I suggest you buy the rails like Jeremy did here and dont use a step ladder, the ladders tend to flex in the mid span cut causing bellies. I still use a ladder buy I have mounted all my stuff to a flatbed trailer with lots of supports under the ladder. I plan on changing that soon though.
@@leslivesdejeremy6317 be careful running that ms500 on the mill full trottle all day. crank shaft is not made for the hard milling life. Talked to the Stihl head manager for sales here in Norway. have heard it from others that the crank have broken in 2. they recomend 661. that is built for hard work day in and day out.
i use the new hq 592xp that has a really toughf bottom end for this type of work. and also have the 500i thats why i asked because i initially wanted to use the 500i for my mill.
I noticed a crank. Can you use the crank with one hand and the chainsaw throttle with the other instead of pushing it? Do you get tired of pushing or is it very low force needed?
your saw was plenty big enough for milling that soft pine but your chain sure wasnt sharp, there was barely any chips coming out, i mill hard maple with a 044 and throw 3x the chips you were in soft pine.
I liked the video BUT: I d rather see more time /like 6 min of this 6:26 minute video/ dedicated to showing details of how the saw is fastened, how the device that operates the saw is designed how the trolley is designed all the tech details , and 26 seconds on cutting which is totally UNDERSTOOD and there is no need to look at it for 5 minutes

How much disassembly is required to change the chain to sharpen it? Do you have to unmount the saw to sharpen or change to a fresh chain?

@Les Lives de Jérémy how do you deal with the ms500i captive bar nuts. Have you changed teh sprocket cover. If so what did you use. All the best.

You can't use the crank when you are milling. you don't need a lot of force to punish it. I 'm very satisfy with that sawmill 👍
