    A brilliant down to earth video. I was looking for this to explain the 'Thai Miracle' to my idiot friends in our home countries. I can not stay so cool in light of their stupidity. This video, however, stays cool and factual which is much better than all of my insults.

      The Thai miracle isn't the Thai miracle; it's the Southeast Asian miracle. It isn't the result of governmental or societal action, since many governments and societies are involved. Check out the numbers on Google. That entire corner of the world is low on COVID deaths. Something else is going on, perhaps previous exposure to similar microbes.

    I remember when I traveled from Canada to other countries and Thailand in February. At that time Thailand was the only one country that had thermal reader at the the airport and hand sanitizers everywhere such malls, temples, gas station, restaurants. They took COVID precautions seriously which other countries weren't active much as Thailand.

      If you count on temperature reader to detect COVID , then you are not testing for covid,
      This video js a fraud, Thailand isn t mass testing its population so of course they are not finding COvid plus they have different test kit.

      @@fifouillemafille1115 well I didn't mention that temperature count COVID cases. Don't change the point. Yes Thailand hasn't mass testing because they handle the pandemic well so why they need to waste their money for that. By the way the death is still low compare to the west.

    Very informative but I think he missed out on the 6th reason. If, as he says, Thailand only got the G16 mutation and it is not as liable to be transmitted as the other mutations then the fact that Thailand almost immediately stopped incoming tourists, I eel that was the main reason it is so much more in control here. Especially as New Zealand did the same.

    There may be many other variables such as
    - Thai people have many other vaccinations since childhood, it is one of the top in the world.
    - Almost every Thai food has a mixture of herbs. Because Thai ancestors taught them to eat food as medicine But at that time the car didn't have. Today, Thai people love racing speed, there are many accidents.
    - Stay in the summer
    - Thais are people who respect the elderly, adore children, so anything related to this issue will receive special cooperation.
    - There are many things that Thai people have in their minds, and foreigners do not have or have few. For everyone to observe from the case of children trapped in the cave

    • @AnthonyKuster
      @AnthonyKuster  4 роки тому +1

      You’re right that other factors likely contribute to the success, which may have fallen outside the top 5. I would agree that vaccinations and, probably even more substantially, prior exposure to other similar coronaviruses (I’m talking recent research on T cell response and cross immunity), are very important and may explain much of what we across the entire Mekong region. Many things you mention relate to the communal society of Thailand (as opposed to individualistic societies), which I tried to mention as a key factor. I hope all of these can help the kingdom maintain its success. Thanks for watching!

That we can fight in the first place because of cooperation to fight together Myanmar Malaysia has significantly increased the number of infected people. It is highly likely that there will be a second outbreak in the country. Because Thailand has a border with Myanmar for 1000 kilometers, they are able to smuggle across the border. 8 million people unemployed related to tourism businesses. Around 60% of guesthouses, hostels, small hotels closed down. Record high suicide rates in the country, more than 2500 this year.
    In the meantime a highly sanctioning Special Tourist Visa which requires you ridiculous logistics loopholes and requirements to just spend 14 days in an accredited quarantine hotel when you spend more money in a room locked down.
    While in the meantime 59 people died of COVID in Thailand in a country where traffic accidents kill around 50 each day.
    So bravo for Thailand for protecting the people but for what cost? The country offered a financial help with 5000 THB help for the people lost their jobs related to the virus. When instead of 2 million people 6 million requested the funds the government was not even able to finance the "support".
    I like these "educational" videos which only show the healthcare side of the situation but skip the financial harms.
    And I also forgot to mention that the TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) was not even able to communicate properly what are their intentions so no travel agencies were able to come up with a proper plan. They said that they will open up the country in August. Instead a yearly 40 million tourist they said in September that they expect 8 million. The last STV bullshit was saying it will be around 1,25 million. And do not get me started what happened at the import/export scene. I can take three showers a day.
    So to end this video: yes. Thailand dodged a bullet from a pistol to face a machine gun spreading bursts of bullets.

      Different between Thais and the west is, life is hard already, and Thai people are well aware of it.
      Sure, things could have been better and people are struggling, but you need to understand what is the point worrying about all the financial impact when you are on the dead bed and can’t spend a dime when you are in the grave. A lot of foreigners said If Thai people are more ambitious, we could be like Japan and Singapore, but you know the main reason Thailand is at where we are is because our culture emphasize on being content of what you have and living within your mean.
      Most Thai people understood the daily struggling and sacrifice for the grater good of the society is taught in school unlike the West. We didn’t survive the colonialism by luck, but because we are united as a nation and we will get through once again.
      To one of the posters that s***ting on Thailand, I’m take offense by your comment, and it shows how little you know about my country and culture

    All southeast Asia countries are doing rather well, including many southern provinces in China. Because there are many different governments, religions, customs, and health systems, there has to be another explanation. I suspect southeast Asia population have been living with various (7 strains in the wild) coronavirus strains for years and and developed herd immunity. Maybe some researcher should do a sample antibody test throughout southeast Asia.

    • @AnthonyKuster
      @AnthonyKuster  4 роки тому

      You’re right that this neck of the woods has been remarkably unfazed. I still think the best explanation is the lack of the European genetic mutation, because this applies to New Zealand and many of the other countries (this has been documented through genetic sequencing). I’ve wondered the same thing, and other ideas like cross immunity from other viruses have been proposed but so far convincing evidence hasn’t really been found to support it. What particularly makes this theory challenging is the struggles that Philippines, Indonesia, and now Burma have.. I struggle to reconcile the cross immunity theory with this observation.. it’s possible it might play a role though

      Yes, this video talks about what Thailand has done basically from April on. I made a small point that, at first, Thailand (and frankly the world) had a disastrous response, and I was a vocal critic, publishing articles highlighting these weaknesses. Once politicians stepped out of the way, things greatly improved. That incident you are talking about, where the celebrity who got infected at the boxing match announced his infection before official confirmation and was threatened with the law, was a big turning point.

But since i travelled often to Asia, i know that facemasks are common practice in cities (to avoid dust), when people are sick or when people are pronable for infection (after dental surgery for example); If you look at Sweden hardly any face masks have been used! We in Belgium had to use masks AFTER the 1st wave...and still people did get infected. Many countries show the same; wearing face masks only for professional health care or sick people should be recommended while most people do not know how the ware a face mask probable....and for viral control the common face masks do not work

    In term of Covid19 safety, Thailand might be the best. But Covid19 effect in Thailand, it is not good at all.
    On your #5 about communication. The most useful information for ordinary people is the number of new cases outside quarantine.
    It is a threat level for the people. But we haven't directly seen it from the ministry of health website.
    We need to interpret from several number between the day. But after March 26 we cannot do that anymore due to more limited data.
    The gov may talk about that number on daily TV but who can watch that 30-60 minute for just that number. Why not put most useful data on website?
    I agree with you on #4 social norm. I expected, Thai people have large individual space. They may not feel comfortable when unknow people are within that area.
    It is a good measure for preventing COVID spread.
    Could you recheck your #1 again? Italian strain of Covid19 was spread in Thailand during Lumpinee boxing ring incident. Is it the same as your mention in #1?

    • @AnthonyKuster
      @AnthonyKuster  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for you interest and thoughtful comments! About finding the daily reported data from Thailand, I find it fairly readily available online, unless I am misunderstanding what numbers you are looking for. As an example, you might consider the MoPH website:
      ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/eng/situation.php (English)
      ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/situation.php (Thai)
      However, since there are not any new cases being detected outside quarantine, perhaps that is why you cannot find that number.
      About #1, yes, I'm sure. The seminal research on this topic, which is what I cite in the video was published in June/August. That paper is here: www.cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=S0092-8674%2820%2930820-5
      If you go to page 822 of that paper, you will see a graph for Thailand a graph for New Zealand. The interpretation of those graphs is that the key mutation in question never was detected in Thailand. In fact, the spike in cases you see in the figure is the boxing cluster you mentioned. In fact, that cluster had its own genetic mutation signature which was unique to Thailand. It had a mutation on the spike, but it is not the critical one that seems to increase infectivity.
      As another point, the "old" version of the virus essentially does not exist anymore. The D614G spike mutation now dominates and is the virus is not being detected anymore without that mutation (but this complete takeover took place after Thailand already eliminated local transmission). You can see that in this graph here: cov.lanl.gov/content/index
      So, presumably, the virus detected in people in quarantine after arriving from overseas would all have this particular mutation (D614G), since it seems the virus only has this mutation. Nevertheless, the key is that that particular mutation never made it into community spread in Thailand (and, it seems, New Zealand, too).
      You might also enjoy playing around with this website, although I don't know how to use it fully myself: www.gisaid.org/epiflu-applications/hcov-19-genomic-epidemiology/
      Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and questions!

    • @JingSkyJoker

      @@AnthonyKuster Thanks and appreciated your informative response.
      I used to check this website for Covid status in Thailand until May 21. ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/eng/index.php.
      Now we can interpret new case outside quarantine area by using the number of total new case subtract by the new case inside quarantine area. So we need to do simple math stuff to know the current threat.
      Another considerable number is the number of patients under treatment. That number was missing from the website since Macrh 27. It told the load on public health system regarding to Covid.
      Thanks again for sharing info with you!!

    • @AnthonyKuster
      @AnthonyKuster  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, well, we haven’t had local cases for many months and have virtually closed the borders, so these large gatherings are low risk (since no one infected to transmit). People who are unfamiliar with the health system are skeptical but for those of us who are familiar know Thailand is aggressive and has been pragmatic in its mitigation. This eradication strategy cannot last forever, though, as we will need to get back connected with the rest of the world eventually.

      @@AnthonyKuster I want to add another point. The cdc website is manipulating all the studies from their sources. Here is a good example:
      go to that page of the cdc:
      cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/more/masking-science-sars-cov2.html
      Look for this paragraph and sentence
      SOURCE CONTROL TO BLOCK EXHALED VIRUS:
      " Upwards of 80% blockage has been achieved in human experiments that have measured blocking of all respiratory droplets,4..."
      then go down and look for this paragraph and link: REFERENCES: #4.
      pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32917603
      click on it and look for the following text:
      --> ABSTRACT:
      "Mandates for mask... ...It is assumed that wearing such masks reduces the likelihood for an infected person to spread the disease, but many of these mask designs have not been tested in practice {= NO human experiments!} We have demonstrated a simple optical measurement method to evaluate the efficacy of masks {= Computer simulation ONLY!}
      I hope this helps, if not you may still ask me of course and please share that info if you are able to!

      Enough tests or not, hospitals in Thailand are not overwhelmed with Covid cases. They also put everyone tested positive in the hospitals, whether they have symptoms or not. This way they can stop the spread way better.

      Dear Mike, I test Sars-Cov2 or Covid-19 PCR about 1000-2000 case per day while Thailand locked down. Yes, that s not enough to proof that the number the goverment show is the right number. I recognised that s not enough even though I work 10 times harder. They just check sus-people, re-opening business officers, people related. But the key of winning this is not to check much higher. It s assumtion that everyone infected, then play the game together. The game we do not spread virus to others.
