Hi 👋, From a long time ago, 😂. I was looking at buying the Lignatool but as we all no they are a great jig if you have a lot to in the timber frame construction industry, and very expensive, I made a set of jig out of MDF through trial and error, it took me approximately two hours quite a few years ago, once I had made it and I was happy with the way the joint went together. I went to an engineering firm that tired used over the years on the outskirts of Bury Saint Edmunds in England., they machines up to 10 mil, thick aluminium plates for me to match my MDF jigs that I made, at the time I was restoring a mill over in France, where I needed to take out 24 floor joists , they were somewhat rotten to say the least it was not safe to walk on the floor above, once I had removed the old flooring and clean the area up., made up a large wall plate approximately 12 x 4”, and bolted it to the wall with stainless steel threaded rod, which was bonded into the wall, I did, however, put post under the wall plate to give it extra support as the building is quite old and a bit frail in some places, including the cutter, and having the aluminium plates, made up, it was less than £500, this did not include the new router that I brought , Mafell 😂,
As you have done when needs, must you modify and make your own to do the job , I done this job back in 2014 and it’s still solid as a Rock,
Phil from the moulin France, where I have now retired to

I love this video. I’m trying to do exactly the same thing. Could you show me or provide dimensions for your 2 templates you made? I can’t figure the dimensions. Thanks !

Hi! Great jig! I also made the jig, now im looking for the right router bit. Can you share a link of the bit you used?

I love your vids. I do a bit of personal timber frame building as well as some help for a friend who does it professionally. Very informative.

Thats a 3000£ Lignatool dovetail system right there. A piece of plywood. Nice.

That's pretty cool and beautiful wood. Just a suggestion to maybe hog away most of the wood with something like a circular saw or something. It will be alot easier on your bit and router.

I really like the way you take advantage of high tech , it is way faster than using hand tools. even I don't agree with the size of joints you made on that timber . great job sir , great job .

Hi there!! first of all, thanks for the video, super cheap way to get a template. One question: Would you be willing to share a file with the template? in order to print it and get it here to my project? Thanks in advance. Best regards.

Are the two templates you use cut from the same piece of 3/4 or did you have to make two separate jigs

Cool video. Maybe start with a little relief pass for the sake of your router bit?

    Hai there,
Can you write the measurements of this specific dovetail tenon and mortise? I've been searching for it for a long time and yes I do like your version of the template. If I get the measurements I'll built one...do this routerbit cost around 300 dollars as red the other comment?
    Keep them coming ....
    Jury.

Thanks for posting this, I have had my eye on an Arunda Jig for sometime now but can't justify the cost yet, I even priced just the dovetail bit from Arunda, and it's maybe $300.00 USD by itself, I thought I would build the templates myself as you did, that would be easy enough to do. I was thinking could the entire structure be built with just dovetail joints? Even the angle braces? Mortise and tenon joints do weaken the beams and posts to a degree, however there is a lot of wood left in a dovetail joint like you have here. My only fear would be the joint could shrink out of the pocket altogether, however a decorative or hidden metal fastener could be used to keep everything tight and from shrinking and separating.

Es ist ein Dewalt und meiner Meinung nach ein wenig klein für diesen Zweck. Ich würde einen Scheer, Mafell oder den größten Festool vorschlagen.

Sir quick question for you. What species of wood are you using for your frame in the video? The grain and color look amazing.

You are really dogging your router and dovetail bit. You might consider taking a cut like that in two passes. You'll prolong the life of your router and your bits.

I would like to see a picture of the finished installation to get a better perspective of how or where this is being used to understand why. Typically a ridge beam sits atop a post with a much larger mortise and tenon so I am not quite grasping the reason for such a small dovetail.

Nice that he has made his system himself, I have also done it myself as I find the existing systems far too expensive (Lignatool and Mafells Arunda), but I think that his equipment (cutter and bit) is a bit undersized.

And for all of you who ask for specific measurements on the templates (it depends on the copying ring dimensions, bit angle, etc.), if you can't measure yourself up to this, the task is probably not for you.

I can not understand why you chose to use a Dovetail router bit instead of a straight cutting bit, since you were not cutting a through wood dovetail slot and were actually just cutting around and following a design pattern.

    • @bigassslabs-chainsawmillin8461
      @bigassslabs-chainsawmillin8461  6 років тому +1

The Shadow I used a dovetail bit because the mortise that will be receiving this is also cut with a dovetail bit, to allow the two to lock in together.

    • @theshadow1559

Happy Holidays To All : Thank you for the quick response to my question. Yes you are joining two large pieces of wood together, using a cut away dovetail design as the joinery. But, the bit you are using was designed to be used in an entirely different manner. (i.e.) It was meant to cutout a dovetail design in wood the exact size of the router bit its self, no larger, no smaller. It was not designed to make a larger dovetail template cutout. Albeit, its your project and as such, its your choice to use what you wish. I was just curious as to why you used that particular router bit.
