I use both Bear and Craft. I like Craft for when I need to make something I publish, like a PDF or a DOCX. Whereas, Bear I like for straight note taking. Plus, tagging in Bear is more flexible than just straight folders.
Currently using Notability. I can record classes and it does a bang up job of transcribing and time linking them. Killer feature for me. When I’m done with school I may switch back to Apple Notes. Not thrilled with the UI but it works, gets regular updates and the price is right.
I switched to Bear 1.5 years ago just for the Apple Watch support. It's amazing for an itinerary when you're too busy to pull out your phone. And the To Do check boxes are perfect.
Been using Bear Notes for almost a year. By now, so comfortable with Bear, one starts missing some of the ‘special’ which brought me to Bear - maybe better worded as “take for granted”
The simplicity of Apple Notes and have years and years of notes is the key. Plus sharing notes with family members. And it's FREE. I have Bear but all the complications make it annoying. Especially trying to increase the type size of the body font, which comes in too small when you export pages as a PDF.
Bear has an excellent web clipper which Apple Notes doesn't have. It is a wonderful program and they provide a useful tool to export your Apple Notes. Exporting out of Bear is also good. I am not sure I care about Mr. Robles comments on its HTML ability and flexible formatting, but Bear does what it does very well for a modest $2.50 a month.
I have been a bear user since it came out. I use Apple notes as well, but always find myself going back to bear. Mostly, long term stuff, and note I will be constantly editing I will put in bear, I’ll use Apple notes for quick lists, or things I don’t want to forget like a new book, or tv show I found out about.
After testing out dozens of notes apps I’ve used Bear for the last 1-2 years straight. It’s amazing for capturing notes quickly Excellent markdown and Shortcuts support is the deciding factor for me. Only thing missing is shared notes though, for that I still use Apple Notes
My goal is to create a bi-directionally linked database of my recipes. I was a professional chef for 35 years. I have been using a combination of Apple Notes and Obsidian for the past year. I want to love Obsidian! But I don't enjoy being in the app. I am really resistant to it and I do not know why. I think part of it is I hate using plugins and I feel like I spend more time trying to change the way Obsidian looks versus time spent writing and creating my database. Apple notes is easy to use and fairly powerful now. It is a little too vanilla and my biggest gripes are picture sizing within notes and how poorly it interacts with file imbeds such as excel, apple numbers.
You’re in the right direction but you give up too early. I’m in the position like you before, so annoying why my vault is not look the way i want, why my database is not working the way i want. But after a lot of optimization, i manage to sort it all out. Now it’s perfect, and pretty sure i don’t need to make any major change for years to come. That’s the thing with Obsidian, you use it without plugin is very boring, and with plugin, you have to do the brain work to optimize it the way you want, and that’s took a lot of time and effort. Took me 6 frickin months to perfect my setup from kwowing nothing 😂
Bear has really great bi-directional links and it’s very simple to use. Generally I really like how I can sort my notes in Bear, you should give it a try
I prefer Bear over Apple Notes and have for over two years, since I started using the subscription Pro version. The only Apple Notes aspect I really miss is the Smart Folder function. People say Tags are great, and they are; but Smart Folders have a unique ability that Tags cannot match, the ability to use multiple Tags, dates and more conditions to create a grouping to notes that are easy to tweak without having to edit the associated underlying Tags of the individual notes therein. It’s the sole feature I would like Bear to implement. Bear’s feature set and export abilities as well as the Safari extension are amazing, all of which were why Bear was the App Ioved to from Evernote, though I keep wanting to like Apple Notes. Another thing I find Bear is better at, is consistent note synching between my Mac, iCloud and my iPhone; Apple Notes has a continuing problem with that. Just thought to let readers now, in my experience.
I love the concept of Bear - my biggest knock on it. The notes are incredibly hard to read. I've been dealing with a partially detached retina for several months - it's a slow healing process. But I downloaded and tried Bear and found the grey color scheme to be very difficult to read. It's a side effect of my eye injury. I know there are different themes / color schemes you can invoke and likely you can even build your own - but the few that I tried didn't seem to improve the readability.
Is there a lifetime subscription to Bear Notes? Also, does it have the stack feature that Evernote has? To group different notebooks together in one place? I may need multiple stacks lol. Also, is it possible to transfer the 1000s of notes I have on Evernote to Bear notes? Thanks and great video!
Bear had collapsible headers before Apple Notes and exports to Markdown, text, Word, html, RTF, PDF and more. Plus you and back up the database to a local drive if you want with a little Siri Shortcut work on a regular basis.
Bear has been my favorite notes app... but sadly, I had to divert from it to another due to the fact that it does not have a Web version! I am an Apple user for all personal devices but am a Windows/PC user for my work environment. A notes app being cross platform has become so necessary for my workflow that I've had to start using Upnote (which also has a nice interface and customization... no Web app but at least has a Windows download version that is easy to access even on enterprise devices so I can use it across ALL my devices!). I know Bear says on their support page that a Web version is coming. Bear... I'm waiting... patiently waiting... sigh.
I used to use Bear. I use UpNote now which is kinda similar to Bear but cross platform. I agree with the design perspective because I don’t want to use apps that has an ugly UI and is not minimal. Bear is really great for typwritten notes. Now that they include Apple Pencil support and OCR, it is really a great Evernote competitor. The price increase though was the reason I moved. It used to be like a dollar and fifty per month. Not it’s really steep
Haven’t looked at Bear for a long while. In a way it strikes me as something of a Craft lite. i don’t say that as a put down but rather as a strength.
