Thanks Rob, Lots of details that I didn't understand from the manual supplied in the kit. Still took me most of the day to get it all together. Really great video, you didn't leave out any of the key parts of the install.
Great detailed video! Heads up to anyone doing this the red wire you run from the fuse box to the back can ark even if battery is disconnected, I’d put the eyelet on stud last and if it arks and lights don’t work check the fuse that runs off that eyelet it’s in that wrapped connector that you zip tie next to engine if it blows gets a new 30amp fuse.
I have a 2021 JL 4 door. Getting the wire through the grommet behind the dashboard is a war. It was a Royal pain in the neck. The job long and testing but through determination I got it done and now I know why the dealer charges $500 for the install. The instructions that came with the harness are terrible. This video is a big help.
The new harness hitch was very easy to install, it took a little bit of time, but not hard at all. Some people on the comments make it seem like it'll be very hard to get it done, but don't get discouraged like I did at the begging. I bought a $50 dollar tool kit since I didn't have any tools and it was just enough to get it install. I wish the instructions were easier to understand, but after reading everything and taking my time under the jeep i was able to figure it out.

STOP THE PRESS!!! There is a NEW HARNESS! They finally figured out that this is a terrible design and now all of the wiring is done on the exterior. Unfortunately we did not look at our "updated" harness and instructions and spent way too much time taking out trim for no reason. We still used many of your tips and would suggest adding to or clarifying the removal of the white locking tab in the supplied pig-tail harness.
@@jeffroyal6416 Don't do it, man! Just undo the wire and put the trim back together (you would have to do that anyway) then save yourself any more headaches and run it outside along the frame using the special zip-ties (my suggestion). Good Luck!
There's got to be an easier way lol. I installed the hitch itself on our Sahara in 30 minutes, but the wiring looks like a huge pain. Can't you fine gents just create a harness as others have pointed out that taps into the rear lights? Plenty of 12V power running back there. Thanks for the install video either way.
U-Haul universal kit. Or CURT 58964 Custom kit on Amazon. From what I can tell anyway. This is just nuts what they are doing here. And I've heard stories that the fenders never go back on the way they came.
The 2020 is a little different from this Jeep--some of the clips. I'm stuck on the grommet. It's sealed pretty good around existing wires on the outside. Probably going to have to unwrap them and then wrap them back up. Also, the Jeep toolkit doesn't include the panel tool or the tool for the T25s. I used an Allen key for the T25s. The kit for the wiring harness should come with a plastic panel tool considering the price of the kit. The Christmas trees aren't likely to break. They do break. Those should be included too.
I installed the hitch on my own. Ask about having someone else install just the wiring harness. Cost was around $750. I think it is time for a wiring harness adventure!
CHECK YOU WIRING HARNESS! We just bought one and they redesigned it so that it is done along the outside and not interior. Between the instructions and this video we were able to figure it out but spent easily half a day tearing up then replacing interior trim for no reason.
The new wiring kit is easier to install, but the directions are horrible (just abstract pictures). I used this video to help clarify how to unlock wiring connectors on the driver side taillight. Also with both kits, be careful to use trailer hitches that do not interfere with large housing bracket for the 4 & 7 way outlets; the mounting holes are predrilled into the rear frame and are very close to the hitch mounting holes, so harness 82216359aa is not compatible with many non-Mopar hitches. JEEP WRANGLER JL NEW BODY 7 WAY TRAILER TOW WIRING HARNESS 82216359AA really needs it's own UA-cam video...
Excellent video and great added comments by viewers referencing the newer MOPAR wiring harness. At the end of your installation, did you have to flash, or program, the CPU to recognize the installed wiring harness? I'm reading information about a "Tazer JL Mini" that is supposed to be able to allow the owner to program things like this on their own, although the unit is $329, making the dealership reprogram pricing from about $90 (seen in comments below) to $198 as quoted by my Jeep dealership if they reprogram my computer. I have a bit more research to do on the best route to go, but my new MOPAR towing harness kit is on it's way in, along with our new Wrangler 4XE...lots to learn and plan for. Thank you in advance for any information on the programming you may be able to provide. Regards, Paul
Great video, however it is outdated. I followed this video and removed my interior only to find out the new revised kit runs outside the Jeep. Do not follow this video if you ordered the newer revision of this kit.
So I have the mopar trailer light wires installed. I now want to put on my tekonsha break control with the wrangler wire adapter. What do I do with the blue wire. I figured there would be another video on that but I have not seen any.
Guess who cheaped out on the towing package, when the dealership said it's only $600 to add to the factory order. not even that but it comes with a bigger alternator and better radiator Cooling. this one hurt boys.
If I cut the 7/4way connection hole in my Steel bumper will it snap in? I have the RedRock Solid Steel Rear Bumper with LED Lighting (18-24 Jeep Wrangler JL)
Like I said on other videos that I’ve seen. Do you not have a cigarette 12 V plug right by the back tail light it could be either constantly on or switched. Does that not run to the battery itself. It’s got to be powerful enough people plugging coolers into that. I get it if you’re gonna plug in a seven pin and charge a battery in the back but for flat pin I don’t think you need that. your manual says you shouldn’t be towing heavy duty trailers anyway so why would you need trailer brakes? Unless you got a 392 with upgraded axles.
The blue wire is for a brake controller device. Some trailers are equiped with their own brakes and the device will engage the trailer brakes so that you're not using just the Jeep to stop all that momentum.
question. the instructions say to do the install from the outside. does not show it being done from the inside. you recommend installing the way the video shows easier?
I'm contradicting myself because this video is helpful and, at the same time, not accurate for the 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL?! Meaning if you move forward with the installation yourself, you will have to make some modifications to the wiring harness. Unfortunately, Mopar redesigned the wiring harness after this video was created and Mopar's limited instructions have you running the wiring harness underneath the vehicle instead of inside the cabin. Unfortunately, I did not unbundle the wiring harness until I had completely disassembled my interior and didn't realize it until it was too late. So, if you want to have a more professional install and run the harness through the cabin, this video is excellent for showing you how to do that. The problem is that Mopar has the red power wire securely tapped to the black ground wire and the light blue wire for the parking brake. And they are all the same length! It took me about an hour to separate about 3/4 of the red wire from the other two. I had to splice the red wire to attach it to the fuse box to run into the engine compartment because the transistor on the red wire is too big to try to run into the cabin. I had to make some other adjustments. The other problem was that the 7-way trailer connector that connects and drops down from the rear passenger taillight wasn't long enough to reach the 7-way trailer bracket. The bracket is supposed to be bolted on the driver's side of the hitch. Therefore I had to drill and tap the frame on the passenger side of the hitch and connect the trailer bracket there. Frustrating and a good learning experience at the same time. It took me about nine hours for the install.
Is there an updated version of this video? It doesn't match the instructions that came with my kit, which says that I need to route the wiring outside the body, not under the interior trim.
Mopar’s newest trailer warning harness kit part 82216359AA is slightly different and does not allow for easily getting through the firewall, so these instructions will not work for the newest Mopar harness kit.
I just installed this on my 2020 wrangler and once I started it it says start/stop disabled and to service my electronic stability control...any info on how I can fix this?
I was told by a Jeep parts shop that AFTER you install the new harness, you will need to have a dealership reprogram the computer to know that it is able to recognize the harness. A $70-$90 hook up.
This video needs an update. The Mopar wiring harness is now all connected, no separate red wire harness. You do not have to take all the trim pieces off of the passenger side because the wiring harness is now designed to go under the vehicle...now it's just removing the passenger side rear fender liner. The ground lead now connect to the grounds by the fuse box.
Mopar has changed the wiring and you no longer dismantle the interior of your Jeep. You now only need to pin the Y harness behind the left tail light and the plug for the 7 pin.
They also integrated the power wire, it is no longer a separate harness. How are you supposed to push that through the grommet? Only option is to de pin but no instructions. Also is the harness supposed to pass out the rear through the circular cutout and back in to the Jeep through the grommet?
Unfortunately this is outdated, newest mopar harness goes under the vehicle, not through the body, or firewall. Good way to get familiar with most of the work though.
Found it you basically use the blue wire to connect to the controller...the standard appears to be the blue wire...anyway the controller will require 12v from battery a ground and then tap into the cold brake wire so it knows when brakes are being applied
Sean Hartnett the blue wire will be connected to a brake controller if in the future you purchase one. There isn’t an integrated brake controller on the Jeep. If you search for brake controller installation you will understand what I’m describing..otherwise just roll up and store it you won’t need it to be connected anywhere.
Hi! Thanks for the video again! I just installed my harness but I think the new harness has couple of minor differences. So the next to the cable that goes into the fusebox, I have a blue cable that (brake control) - I don’t know what to do with it. Instructions don’t really explain well what to do with this blue cable. Does this mean I have a trailer brake system or that is something else that I would have to add to the system. I’m little confused can you please explain the trailer brake situation?
Mr jeep is still live until you disconnect the wire he said to not disconnect at the fuse box terminals. This is the auxiliary battery wire going to a second battery well well hidden behind the wheel well liner. The dealers don’t even know this. - my jeep became electronically locked up , and the dealer couldn’t disconnect all power to computer until I figured this out the hard way….
2:31 it is absolutely not necessary to mess with the interior trim. Also, Mopar harness now has all wires and fuse wrapped up in outdoor-rated tape. Simply tie new wires to existing wires running under the car. The only item that needs popping off is rear lights and a few tabs, if the car has inner fender liner. Please follow included Mopar instructions. This guy’s process is discouragingly complex.
I got it done on my two door Scout by taking off the right front wheel. Then with one person in the wheel well and one under the dash start poking a white coat hanger through. For some reason I had trouble threading past the fuse box, but my friend was able to see the white and pulled the coat hanger down. It took a few minutes to get this done.
I have a 2021 and my son and I were watching the video and my son was LOL and said something must be wrong cause the guy on the video had no problem getting through the firewall. It took us easily a half hour to muscle past the grommet.
Can anyone tell me if the kit in the install is the 82216359AA or 82215896? The link in the title goes to the former (59AA), but based on comments, I think this might be the older style (5896) which...I think I prefer the routing of even though it's more complicated.
Any idea what the blue wire will be for? It’s routed under the passenger side/glove box and supposed to be for adding a brake controller but the factory installed version has a plug for the controller under the drivers side. Haven’t found any install information for using the blue wire?
Never mind I think I figured it out...basically it’s connected to the controller for output to the trailer brakes..the controller requires 3 other wires..ground, batt and cold brake input so it knows when brakes are applied and to control the brakes on the trailer
So if you have a pig tail that goes from your break controller to the connection under the dash at the driver side, where does the blue wore get contacted at?
@@theviewfrommyhammock Is this for a 2018 or so Jeep?..It depends on if you have factory installed or you did it yourself. If you added it yourself the blue wire will go to the pigtail wire for trailer brake application..there should be a ground input, a power input and a wire that goes to the brake switch so it knows when to apply the power to the blue wire..hope this helps
@@erinboston9636 Instead of running the wiring exposed along the frame of my Jeep, I fished it inside through the entire length of the hollow tube frame and used the access holes in the frame to access and run the wiring. Its a much cleaner look and I'm not worried about the wiring snagging on something and ripping loose. To fish the wiring through the frame I used a flexible electrical fishing snake.
Yes, I put it on my 2022 4Xe, and it works great. I also installed a Mopar brake controller but cannot seem to get it to work. I think the blue wire he puts in the glove box has something to do with it. I cannot find a video that explains that wire. The trailer lights do work though and you will tun it under the jeep not through the interior.
Video does not match the instructions for my 2018 JLU. No need to tear the entire inside of the Jeep apart. Apparently the wiring harness has been updated also since my "red" wire is built into the main harness.
ADMIN please pin this comment: The 2021 harness has same part number but has to be run outside the vehicle... This video doesn't apply to the outside run harness...
@Tom Staab I admit... I opened up my cab following the QT video "then" read the instructions w/ my kit... That is unnecessary.... The new style kit which had the same part # runs on the outside of the vehicle... you will drill some of the plastic rivots on both fender wells and run it along the wire harness from rear to front... My advice... study FCA "ikea like" picture manual, look at the parts in the box and watch this vide for tips on the parts that are the same... but map it out before you start tearing the interior apart.... Good luck,, went very smoothly for me once I realized what was different.
Great video. I will now go and pay someone to do it for me.

Found this comment an hour too late lol all trims were off and now I need to follow the Mopar instruction as all harness were wrapped and connected
Wow great job
Can you do a install on a 2019 Cherokee trail hawk
Where does the blue wire connect to?
Great man thanx
Hey where the blue wire get connect he never said thanks
great video! shame that jeep doesn't include this as a basic thing.
Anyone know if the fuses need to be installed once you do this?
No fuses
Getting the wiring through the grommet in the front is near impossible. Not sure wtf Mopar was thinking. Ended up cutting it out of there.
It took us easily a half hour to muscle past the grommet.
thank you great help
i did install the kit over 2020 Rubicon but the signal lights are'nt working...
can i have your advice for that plz..
Computer reflash at the dealer. That’s what I’m being told. Did you have to have that done?
Can anyone tell me if the kit in the install is the 82216359AA or 82215896? The link in the title goes to the former (59AA), but based on comments, I think this might be the older style (5896) which...I think I prefer the routing of even though it's more complicated.
This video was shot using the older style kit
So many satisfying "clicks"......
The new kit comes with one harness and you cannot pass it through the grommet, neither do you have to run the wiring inside under the trim.
Is it possible to run the wiring underneath the jeep to avoid the hassle of taking apart half of the jeep??
With the new harness your only option is to run it along the right frame rail of your Jeep, no dismantling of the interior required.
@@erinboston9636 do you happen to know the part number for the new harness? Sorry late to the game here. Ty
"Double nutting" lmao 😂😂🗯🗯
Como conpro el conector de la trailer
Does this kit work on the 4xe? I can't get a straight answer from the dealer
Is my JK the same as a JL? What is the part number for the 5 pin harness only?
This is the standard JK hitch wiring: www.quadratec.com/products/92015_8001_14.htm
@@Quadratec thx
How different is it for the diesel
What wire do you tap into for brake signal on a trailer brake when adding this kit?
If you add an aftermarket radio and Maestro module, the module provides a brake pedal wire.
I think he said the blue one
What happen whit the blue wire ??
Why is there so much dust under the hood? And the wheel wells need washed water 🚿 🧽
Video does not match the instructions for my 2018 JLU. No need to tear the entire inside of the Jeep apart.
Apparently the wiring harness has been updated also since my "red" wire is built into the main harness.
The kit you sell is a made by mopar?
yes
F that, I’ll option it at sticker lol
Anyone recognize the trailer at the end of the video?
Wat sorta rivet gun do i need
Mine goes under the car and it’s from mopar, they probably changed it for easier installation
Mine goes under the car also hope it’s easier than this
ADMIN please pin this comment: The 2021 harness has same part number but has to be run outside the vehicle...
Buy the curt kit you don't have to dismantle you jl jeep
UPDATE THIS VIDEO FOR THE NEW KIT
The 22 is different.
God help you if you don’t have a coat hanger or an obnoxiously long zip tie
