I've watched your video several times and I can't wait to try it myself. I've got about 5 sets of dull knives sitting on my bench that will more than pay back the purchase price in sharpening costs. I have the older two knife Dewalt planer and every time I take a set of knives in for sharpening it costs about $35. Well played!

Nice product Steve. I have a sharpening service and I have designed a jig that I use on a belt sander using ceramic belts.The concept is the same.It works very well. I used to tell customers that I could'nt sharpen those double sided blades using my planer blade sharpener due to the thin cheap steel from China. I decided to create a way and it has paid off for the customer and myself. At $.80/in, I make money and the customer saves money.
To those worrying about heating the blades during sharpening and annealing them, well Dewalt uses M4 tool steel and it wil not anneal without extreme heat. Look it up, you wont affect the hardness with moderate heat.
That's pretty smart. One consideration might be having ground tool steel end up in the mechanisms below. Wouldn't be good for any worm gears and such involved. Complicating the design a bit but would see covering any open parts of the throat plate with something, or have extraction set up.

As a long time woodworker, I know all wood is unstable or have you treated it with PEG? A bar of metal would be nice. The grind pattern on the blade needs to be at 90 degrees to the edge, ideally.
I bought this several years ago and have been happy with the product. The down side is, I only sharpen my blades perhaps once a year and I have to go through a ritual of finding the equipment and reviewing the you tube video as a refresher. Organization is not my strong point.
I made a jig on my Dewalt Radial arm saw to do something similar, But you win. This is the better way to shapen. Thanks and I'll buy your jig. BC Canada

However, It might be a good idea to >> caution users to clean out the sawdust before grinding.
That's a great idea, it looks to work well with easy setup! Are you sure that a 80 grit is the best for sharpening ? Sharpening wet stones for chisel and handplane blade are super fine grit like 2000 grit for extra sharp tools... I think it would be good to test your device with the finest sand paper you can get. Anyway the jig is great and I like the idea of using the tablesaw! You also can make a micro bevel to the blade by changing the tablesaw "blade" angle. I wish you the better luck for your patent.
Thickness planers are not intended to put a final finish on a piece of wood. 80 is more than adequate. Handplanes, sanders, drum sanders are still required unless you are building "farm style" furniture.

The blades off the Dewalt planner you sharpened on the video are wider than the blades on my Delta planer, which are narrow. Will this jig work for them?

for some reason my HD did not have it at the rental dept. I did not see much of anything there. I guess I can call them and ask if I can buy some if I knew what it was called. Do you have a name for it that I can give them over the phone or I can even call the HD that you get it from and buy it from them and have it sent to me as I really can use some nice sandpaper as this would be key for this setup. Each pass seemed to take off more metal (sparks) towards the end of each pass, suggesting that the circular abrasive sheet is not properly aligned with the guide. Wouldn't this make the blade out of alignment when it is returned to the planer
The sparks that you are seeing are not removing a lot of metal from the blade. You are just burnishing the cutting edge. The thing to remember is you have to take very light cuts this is all that is needed. The 80 grit paper will not grind the blade it only will burnish the cutting edge. If you are seeing this effect you describe you are trying to take too heavy of a cut .
I'm sorry, but anyone who knows anything about proper sharpening knows this method would be a joke. 1. 180 grit for blade sharpening? 2. These kind of speeds can ruin blades easily by overheating if not used how it's intended 3. This is not precise 4. The blade is sharpened first downwards and then upwards by the back of the saw blade, so a burr can occur, or worse yet a rolled over edge I don't recommend this to anyone. There are alot way better methods for sharpening blades.
I just went to order off eBay and you are asking $125 for a 7" steel disk and a block of wood with tiny lil clamps on it. I think that is SOOO far over priced I can't believe it. Wow.

Go invent your own sharpener then have it made in China and sell it for nothing, otherwise give this guy his due. This is one of the easiest to use sharpeners I have seen.
It does not as a matter of fact they are stronger . The steel that is used comes from china . The blades are junk to start with the steel is garbage . If it was American steel I would agree with you but the heat tempers the blades stronger in the china steel.
I agree. I think the days of "American made" being better might have existed at one point, but not anymore. Everything is made to manufacture specs. You get what you pay for. These blade aren't meant to be sharpened anyways, they are indexed so that the protrude evenly. You might be able to get a little honing on them but a few grinds and they might not stick out far enough.
This does NOT appear to be accurate at all. The "just add 15 degrees" part is itself troubling, (since saw angles are notorious for inaccuracy) but the inability to truly control the pass--- there is nothing to stop the blade from more forcefully encountering the grinding wheel if the push isn't precisely along the fence--- is even more troubling to watch. Homemade effort, but sorry, no.
Well I have sold over 500 with no complaints so far. Now I will agree with you on one thing you can not have a six pack prior to sharpening a set of blades . That will make sure you do not hold the jig up against the fence. No complaints so far.

Hey Robert... Did you know that planers blades use a REVERSE BEVEL blade... That is, the bevel goes last on the cut. So the angle is NOT CRITICAL AT ALL!!! Check your facts.
In fact, the only thing that the bevel angle does, is providing the CLEARANCE. The Bevel goes on the BACK of the cutting. It just provides SUPPORT to the very edge. So, it is absolutely NOT critical as say, when cutting with chisel, that has the bevel in front of the cutting.

+Tony Baker Yes the front edge is on 20 Degree just needs to be skim cut so your blade edge sticks beyond the edge of the jig. 2 Minute fix

You can only get the paper at the HD who have the rental centers. It is used for sanding hard wood floors

idea Is good, but damn that Is risky. tablesaw Is full of easily flammable saw dust. and that grinding Is making a lot of sparkles.
If you check e-bay that warning is on there . When I made this video i did not mention that but you are correct
GOOD JOB! Too bad there is not more exposure for this idea.
It would be easy to make a similar jig to sharpen chisels. Come up with one and you can make a little more more money.

Inventors by rights, charge for their idea, getting the idea to market, etc. The cost of raw materials, shipping, insurance also adds to the cost.
