    HI Don.
    I really enjoy your attitude when you were working on the floor as a machinist. Their is always a better, faster, funner way to get the job done. I wonder how many people realize that your positive, getter done attitude, is why you were able to buy and run this successful company.
    Keep the videos coming.

      +Metal Tips and Tricks (Dale Derry) There is no question that you have to enjoy this sort of work in order to be successful at it. I'm just beginning in it as a Moldmaker's Apprentice, and what I find even among the old timers is they all still get a level of satisfaction from their work. I don't think it's possible to grow and advance in this field without taking some enjoyment in the work you do.

    I played beat the clock 40 years ago @ Hamilton Standard. I was the O D grinder guru. # 1 Brown & Sharpe , specialty set up by turning the wheel spindle on a angle and dressing the wheel for face grinding to produce a circular lay finish with a .005 max radius. Grinding the face and o d to the high side of the tolerance , redress the wheel , then grind to clean up the marker. The finished product was unexcelled with a mirror finish and well under the .005 max radius. 🥇

    There’s an old landis OD grinder at my shop that I’ve seen used once, and they failed.
    I’ve been given the task of learning to use the damn thing.
    Good thing this channel exists. I hope I don’t screw anything up,

      When using dead centers best use graphite paste to lube

    I want an OD grinder for hard part finishing. I keep my eye out all the time.Currently I have found hard part turning to work excellent and very fast as long as you don't have interruptions, then it goes to pot fast.

    Hello, how would you approach urethane material's on a grinder? I run on a Landis od grinder and what i do is Face the surface, and turn the OD, then i use another grinding wheel for a radius plunge. How would you approach Ureathane. I've been doing this for 2+ years now and just want to get more accurate with what i do.

    For roughing the part up, I prefer to plunge grind. It takes about the same time. And then a few finishing passes to get those damn microns.

    • @SuburbanToolInc
      @SuburbanToolInc  9 років тому +2

      nocturnodrummer The problem with that is you dull the wheel.

      With so many variables its hard to say one way is better than the other. Ive surface and jig ground for acouple decades now, in new to od/id grinding. Ive plunged stock off(which definitely dulls the wheel) but with certain matetials it doenst seem to make tjat much uo a difference. Some materials are more friendly to walking across to remove stock but others will destroy your wheel. Imo its all about finding what works best and every job is differnt. Thats the fun part of grinding to me.

    my 2 cents worth, pushing the dead center with your thumb slightly would remove a few tenths for taper adjustment, just watch the sparks

    Haven't had a need to lap a center hole yet, but if it comes up, how is it done properly? Just lapping compound, a 60 degree soft metal rod in a rotating tool and go at it?

    I'd tell them to take that down to the lathe and take all the damn stock down to .003 - .005 over size. Then I'll gladly grind it for them! 😂

    • @kurtfromMichigan
      @kurtfromMichigan 5 років тому

      I get upset when im only left with .003 to .005 on a part. I like to have something to work with in terms of grind stock when im getting the taper out of the machine. Plus rubbing scale against a wheel is never fun. Its going to keep loading and glazing the wheel. Roughing stock is easy. So who cares of theres .020 on a diameter.

      This works if you have a dial indicator placed 20 inches from the center of your machine. Big diameter minus small diameter. Then divide that by the length that you just measured. Then move the decimal place over to the right one number.

    Mmmm...........I wouldn't finish anything grinding towards a spring loaded centre, that's asking for chatter to rear its ugly head and if I tried to pull the tailstock on my J&S 1300 it would not move anywhere!

    I grind small and large parts up to 168" long. As small as 1/2". Carbide coatings. There is no quick and accurate way. It's ,002 per pass max or they egg from deflection. Diamond wheels can't easily be dressed.

    how do you grind a thread on an OD grinder?

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 9 років тому

      meocats I think that takes a special od grinder just like grinding gear teeth.

      just sync the rotation with the side feed somehow

    • @meocats
      @meocats 9 років тому

      why does it need to tilt? The threading tool on the lathe is a form tool just like the wheel profile

    • @TheWireEDM
      @TheWireEDM 9 років тому

      meocats With a form wheel and having the workiece rotation tied to the table X axis movement. I'm sure there is manual machines for that, but CNC is the keyword here as it allows any thread form and pirch to be done and makes it easy to dress the wheel.

    load up the wheel with a pencil??? it needs dressing after that big cut.

    • @SuburbanToolInc
      @SuburbanToolInc  5 років тому

      if you use a red cram that would be true. not so with the pencil that's why we use it. the pencil is graphite and it will never stick to the wheel.
