@@jonathandawson3091 I don't think you're gonna regret it!! this is my first ereader, and honestly the integration with calibre + blue light/red light stuff is what matters most. Zero complaints about the screen considering I'm mostly just reading text off epubs with it.
Long time Kindle reader here. I bought the new Clara BW instead of the Colour, because I didn’t want to compromise on the reading experience (I never read comics or manga, so crisp text is what is most important). Went with the Kobo because I got sick and tired of waiting for Amazon to bring out a small e-reader with warm lighting. As much as I like my larger Kindles, the 6-inch form factor just can’t be beat for portability and convenience when out and about. The Clara BW is now my most-used e-reader! It’s not perfect (perfection lies somewhere in between a Kindle and a Kobo), but I like it. A lot!
I think a colour kindle would have the same issues. The screen door effect is because there is a screen of colour filters overlayed onto of the e-ink screen, and it absorbs a part of the light that would otherwise bounce back. The alternative technology is gallery 3, but devices with this don't seem to be coming out.
My old Kindle Paperwhite is starting to show it's age with a dying battery, so I've been considering replacing it. Since Amazon seems to be deadset on getting lazier, more expensive and providing worse service, I am considering this Kobo colour. I'll probably wait for the next gen like you suggest, since my Kindle still has a little life left in it.

I have a Kindle Oasis and I really like it. But I've been thinking of getting out of the Amazon ecosystem. I love page turning buttons, too so the Libra Colour has caught my eye. It looks great and having color, USB-C, more formats, and 3rd party service integration, and the reading stats would be super nice. But I hesitate because the display on the Oasis is so nice. Not just the lower ppi with the color, but also the fact that the display is recessed into the device. I love that my Oasis screen is completely flat and that helps with touch gestures.
I used to own a B/W Clara but the size was a bit too small for me to read comfortably, so I decided to go for the Libra when I recently discoverd the color models. The size is great and screen looks nice! There seems to be a lot of discussion regarding the lower resolution, but honestly when I used to read printed books a lot of them didn't really excel in print quality anyways. For me the resolution and colors are perfectly fine on the Libra, though I can see how the need to have the inbuilt lights on almost all the time due to lowered contrast can be an issue for some 🤔
now that you mentioned that in your video i want to give you some more details on the display technology and what amazon might do different. the display market is basically controlled by one company (E-INK) and Kobo/Amazon and others all get their displays from this company. Kobo currently uses the "E-INK Kaleido 3" Displays for their color devices, they are standard b&w displays with a color filter layer on top of it (the extra color layer on top makes the whole thing look darker and grainy) E-INK also has/had another color display called "E-INK Gallery 3", instead of a color filter on top this technology uses colored particels instead of just black ones. this allows for better color saturation and better contrast compared to Kaleido 3. However this technology works sadly very slow and it takes a lot of time to turn pages, that's why currently no company is using this display in their devices. in an annual report earlier this year, e-ink announced a upgraded version of gallery 3 for some time in 2024 and its currently rumored that amazon might use these new displays for their new ereaders. However this is just a rumor and e-ink hasn't yet presented the new displays and amazon could also just use Kaleido 3
Had mine for one day and it’s frozen with lines all over the screen, haven’t dropped it at all and kobo saying it’s not covered under warranty because must’ve been damaged. Waste of £140 + the books I purchased, absolutely disgusted with the customer service
I got one a while back and like it a lot. It has been my main reader since I got it. I have most models (kindle, kobo, nook, pocketbook) and this one is my favorite at the moment. Prior to that my favorite was the Kobo Libra H2O, so I guess that’s not too much of a surprise. 😊. I don’t notice the darker screen or the “screen door effect” at all. Maybe I’m just blind LOL. Very happy with it.

This was my first ever Kobo. I am a Kindle user really, but wanted to try the colour eink technology. I thought this would be a fad, but I haven't put it down, reading books from my local library. Really the colour low pass filter is the issue, and I just found I have to turn up the brightness in some situations..
I'm now having to read some cooking books in English that I only find on Amazon and it was surprising for me when I checked these books on the Kindle app of my phone and found out how colourful they are even in epub format
Out of the trilogy, the first book (Children of Time) is the best. It’s my favourite sci-fi of all time. The second book is great, just not as good as the original. The third instalment is the weakest. I did not dislike it, but it was a bit of a slog to read through to the end, and a bit disappointing if I’m being completely honest. That said, Children of Time = perfection 👌
imho, Kaleido 3 is not getting better than this. The contract issue is due to the extra RGB filter and is part of the technology. Gallery 3 is the future, last year we saw the Bigme Galy and it was like a tech demo of the Gallery 3 technology. 3 secons of flashing screen, but very nice colours. This year we saw the Remarkable Paper Pro, a much better version of the Gallery 3 display technology. Only green apears to be dull. the device itself is too expensive for me and focused on note taking. A small 7 or 8" ereader with android (like Boox) with gallery 3 is perfect for me. I just bought my first ereader boox go 6, because i want B&W for now and wait for more gallery 3 ereaders. I like to annotate or scribble on pdf/epub, but will not do a lot of note taking. My dream device: Supernote Nomad, but with gallery 3.
I hate kobo branded cases. I had one for my first kobo and it was terrible, fell apart a month after getting it. I have always looked at 3rd party cases. I have either bought custom-made ones off Etsy (expensive but pretty) or I have been able to find one on Amazon (cheaper). Since I don't read a ton of comics and just bought the Clara 2e not that long ago I don't think that I will be buying the new color one. Maybe I'll look at the 2nd edition when it comes out.
I’m the opposite my friend 4:15 I’ve invested too much in the amazon eco system to switch to Kobo even though i don’t doubt it is an excellent product.
I really enjoyed your video. I did not expect you to (kind of) touch on sociolinguistics: 4:58. Also, your (again unexpected) book reference, got me very interested in the book. I am not convinced that I should buy a color e-ink device yet, though. I will probably endure without it until the next color technology comes along. For now, black and white e-ink is just fine.

I wouldn't say it's much harder to read, that feels like a bit of an exaggeration. I'd say, at most, it's noticeable if you have lots of experience with e-ink, and especially in the first couple of days from the switch. I can frankly say I don't have any discomfort reading it at the beach, for instance. But I'm sure that if I pick up my old Clara, I'll spot the difference immediately!

I might think different if e-ink devices were responsive, pinch to zoom things which could work for magazines but they can't. And in the absence of that it seems like a gimmick.

I'm finding that it's pretty close to my original Clara. That being said -- I never really stayed on top of battery consumption with these devices. So it's hard to say exactly. Since you'll likely be using the light in situations where you wouldn't with the original Clara, I'm sure this gets slightly worse battery life, but the difference (at least to me) seems mostly negligible.
Kind of disappointed in the Clara Colour. It's hard to read on the bus in the sun which is where I do a lot of my reading. My Clara 2E or Kindle Paperwhite way better.
I am looking at the one that can highlight documents, given I am into research. I will probably just use my very old Kindle e-reader until I cannot replace the battery anymore. Though at times I consider a paper like version… I have all my fiction and some non-fiction in my kindle. Though Non-Fiction I prefer a physical copy to make notes in
That's the beauty of e-readers. You really DON'T have to upgrade, at all. They retain their functionality for much, much longer than most other electronics.
Been considering another e-reader since your last video, used to have and use a kobo as a kid until it broke, but now I'm looking for something with Android, since I have a few ebooks from various different sources, as well as my totally legal manga collection. Been considering something from Onyx Boox
What's the point of small color e-ink screen anyway? On this kind of device (6-7 inch) you'll mostly use for reading text book and you'll use sleep cover like that, It'll be 99% of the time you won't see the color. So reduce your text reading quality quite a bit for 1% "flashy" thing It's kinda gimmicky right? Use-case for e-ink devices with note taking function are more logical than this
I have the kindle and don’t have the mono but I really want color but should I wait if kindle drops a color tablet or get this one :/ I have 120 books on my kindle
Hello im looking to get the kobo clara colour and i have a lot of cbz files if i just drag and drop them on it, is there a way to view it in like a documents folder or do i need to add the metadata with calibre? (Im new to ereaders)
I went with the Clara BW only because when reading on the colour the font was not as sharp as the BW. As a migraine suffer this is the first reader I have been able to read on. All kindles gave me a headache. You should contact Kobo about their car they have the best customer service. Mine still looks brand new and it traveled all over Portugal last month. ❤ 🇨🇦. Great video.
Why dont you talk about the books that you're reading/into? Or the games. The videos you used to do reviewing movies in your brazilian channel were really good, it would be nice to hear about the books/games that you're reading/playing (i mean reviews)
That's what I imagined. Probably pretty good for manga, but pretty bad for stuff in color (which is very ironic, and some might find it sort of defeats the purpose).
Considering manga is mostly black and white, by the nature of the technology, any black and white eraeder will be better as it will have better contrast. The there is the size, I find anything below 7" inches too small to read manga comfortably. Wish there were more 8"-inch ereaders as it would be the perfect size for manga.
Not sure what the hype is about all those new color e-readers, which mushroomed overnight, but apparently they're the thing of the present and evidently here to stay. I don't read comic books, so I don't care so much about colors, but if I did, I'd probably stick to the iPad. The quality is way superior. As for reading books, it is ultimately about reading and enjoying books, so I'm planning to stick to my good ol' Kobo Libra 2, which is an awesome device, and plow through enough books already uploaded there that will last me a while. If someone doesn't have a "black-and-white" device yet, maybe a color e-ink one is a viable option. Maybe? However, the real cool news in your video, quite frankly, is that you're in Brazil now. I absolutely love and miss Brazil. I've been there three times already! The culture, music, language, people, nature, and food! Um pão de queijo para mim, por favor? And if a caipirinha accompanies it, I'm a happy camper already 😄 Até à próxima.
I've just bought it. Kindle died just after one year, after warranty. The second kindle I have is also junk where screen loses contrast after 2 years. Amazon uses DEI to hire employees, so the quality has tanked... It's time to switch to Kobo.
Not exactly. This is about my experience with the ereader as a whole, not just a comparison of its screen to other devices. I could make a video like that!
I was wondering if the contrast would be different from the Black and white version. Hearing this, I would stick with the black and white. The main issue with e-ink displays vs paper is they still don't have the greatest contrast.
I have the same one and I’m so in love with it!! everyone hates the screen but for me I can read perfectly and the colour is huge for me

Been considering another e-reader since your last video, used to have and use a kobo as a kid until it broke, but now I'm looking for something with Android, since I have a few ebooks from various different sources, as well as my totally legal manga collection. Been considering something from Onyx Boox
Yea, for manga I think an ipad would be better. But for books you can just convert them to epub and read on kobo
I wouldn't recommend colour e-ink for comics. Since most manga is black and white, you'll be better served by a conventional e-reader!
Ahoy matey!
How is the experience reading manga or comics?
Awesome with manga
That's what I imagined. Probably pretty good for manga, but pretty bad for stuff in color (which is very ironic, and some might find it sort of defeats the purpose).
Considering manga is mostly black and white, by the nature of the technology, any black and white eraeder will be better as it will have better contrast. The there is the size, I find anything below 7" inches too small to read manga comfortably. Wish there were more 8"-inch ereaders as it would be the perfect size for manga.
@@TheIzzyNobreShow I use it for coloured manga
It looks fantastic
Good to see jake johnson doing good for himself after new girl ended
Did you move to São Paulo?
Nope, Fortaleza! It's my hometown!
4:18 lmao
I'm not a huge drinker but even I love caipirinha!
And yes, absolutely: for comic books, nothing beats the iPad -- and I'm an Android guy!
Kobo not so popular as the second biggest ereader producer where everywhere the cases to get?
Vim ver se pego colorido ou o kindle oasis kkkkk
I've just bought it. Kindle died just after one year, after warranty. The second kindle I have is also junk where screen loses contrast after 2 years. Amazon uses DEI to hire employees, so the quality has tanked... It's time to switch to Kobo.
Thanks, but I think you should have to show more detailed views with color pages... that is the purpose of this video, isn't it?
Not exactly. This is about my experience with the ereader as a whole, not just a comparison of its screen to other devices. I could make a video like that!
I was wondering if the contrast would be different from the Black and white version.
Hearing this, I would stick with the black and white.
The main issue with e-ink displays vs paper is they still don't have the greatest contrast.
NO!! For reading only B/W👍
I'm a big fan of the Boox devices. They run Android so you can install all apps you want. Just be careful you do not install distracting apps 🙈.
Boox devices seem cool. I considered getting one, but the sketchy data security and sending info to unknown Chinese servers was a deal-breaker for me.
