  • Welcome to this week's episode of Heroes Next Door: Station Cribs! Today, we're taking you on an exclusive tour of the Madison Heights Fire Department Headquarters and Training Grounds, located just two miles outside of Detroit, Michigan, in Oakland County.
Join Firefighter Paramedic Tom Levey as he guides us through the comprehensive facilities of this vital department. Our journey begins with a detailed exploration of the administrative side of the department, where the crucial planning and management of fire service operations take place. Tom then leads us into the living quarters, home to nearly 31 firefighters who are stationed here around the clock, every day of the year.
A significant portion of this episode is dedicated to showcasing the daily life and environment of these dedicated firefighters, including the apparatus bay where the essential firefighting vehicles and equipment are housed.
But that's not all - we also step outside to the training facility located directly behind the main station. Here, you'll see a three-story training building designed to simulate a wide array of emergent and fire-related scenarios. This state-of-the-art facility, equipped with specialty gear for hazmat situations, confined space rescue, high angle rescue, and building collapse scenarios, is a testament to the department's commitment to excellence and preparedness. The training grounds even feature an underground portal, allowing the team to train under various challenging conditions.
Throughout the tour, Tom Levey exemplifies the qualities of a community-minded professional. His extensive knowledge, courteous demeanor, and palpable passion for his work are evident in every aspect of the tour.
In this episode, we also delve into the Madison Heights Fire Department's core services and mission. The Fire Statement of Services emphasizes the department's role in protecting life and property, responding to various emergencies with specialized equipment, and providing Advanced Life Support EMS services. The EMS section highlights the department's commitment to offering advanced life support emergency medical services, with 31 licensed paramedics providing pre-hospital emergency care. The department's Mission Statement reaffirms their pledge to offer excellent protection, prevention, and education services for the preservation of life, property, and the environment.

You should go out west to California and check out either Rohnert Park, CA or Sunnyvale, CA. They both have a public safety department. So everyone is a firefighter/police officer. They’ll rotate jobs, usually 6 months as a police officer, 6 months as a fire fighter. In Rohnert Park they run 2 man engine crews as well. The thought process is that medical calls, which are usually 80-90% of the calls they get, only require 2 man crews, with another 2 man crew coming from the ambulance. When they get a fire, or accident call, multiple police patrol units will respond to the scene and act as the 3rd man for the engine crew.

@@tomlevey2594 I have loved all the station tour videos, but my favorites are ones like these where the person giving the tour has seen HND and is a fan of the series. Thanks for contributing to the channel!

My dad works in West Bloomfield fire department in Michigan. They built a new station 3 a few years ago. They are also planning on renovating some of their older stations as well. I would love if you guys could come to West Bloomfield but my dad is not the kind of person who goes on camera lol

When I was hired in 2016 we had 6 man minimum. Since then we have increased staff to 8 minimum with 10 man maximum right now. So we are starting to see positive change
