Joe gives his account to LatestSightings.com: “The reserve is situated in a very remote destination and can only be accessed by a boat, making it quite an exclusive site. Once there, we were welcomed with lunch on the water’s edge & shortly after that we embarked on our afternoon game drive. We were driving around the marshy wetlands on the island where we encountered a herd of elephant and a crash of rhinos - it was here where the standoff began.
It was an absolutely amazing sensation to see & be a part of the standoff where a young elephant bull in musth showed this male white rhino who was boss. We could all physically feel the testosterone aura which surrounded the battlefield of these 2 ancient rivals.
The sighting ended in a stalemate with no winner. I would, however, say, the balancing act of the branch and the elephant “throwing” the branch at the rhino was a somewhat cheeky ending to the tussle. I believe they both showed their belonging in the area with mutual respect, making both of them ultimate winners.
I think this standoff was an extremely rare sighting - it is not every day that we can personally engage with 2 of the big 5 at this level, hence sharing it with Latest Sightings.
If you’re ever so lucky to have this experience, then cherish every moment as it truly doesn’t happen every day - feel the energy and engage personally with our wonderful South African nature”.

Can we just talk about how the elephant *balanced a stick on his head*
It's the elephant equivalent of T-posing to assert dominance
The rhino was flabbergasted, Elephants are basically wizards of the animal kingdom.
This is actually a very smart move by the elephant, and this is why:
Rihnos have poor eyesight and good hearing. Throwing the stick in another direction makes the rihno think there are other predators/enemies, thus throwing him off target and distracting him, eventually evading the fight by causing confusion.
Also, smart animals such as elephants do not engage in battle unless necessary, its always a balance between pros and cons. Rihnos are formidable opponents, who can easily pierce through thick objects and layers with their sharp horn and massive power thrusts. sending other animals flying in the air and flipping cars over are regular outcomes when engaging them. The elephant might win, but a probability of getting his stomach pierced is an unnecessary risk.
A clever decision by a wise animal, indeed.
You are next Simon Cowell.
That’s nice but a bunch of made up bs. Elephants do not fear Rhinos, nor do they avoid confrontation. They are however playful, and borderline bullies. Notice the elephant did not backup. Smdh...

"You should have seen them all!!! They were as big as... as... as ELEPHANTS!!!"
well, 2 elephants.
Elephants are so smart they have been known to hide their tusks with their trunk when humans are around. Rhinos are known to have poor eyesight. I have this sneaking suspicion that the elephant knew that and uses the sound and motion of the stick to distract the rhino. One of the best nature clips I've ever seen.
ohurley11 When we see hotties on the beach, wE hide our tusks in our trunks too.
Was thinking the same thing with the distraction. Kind of thinking the little tricks he was doing was to mess with the rhino's poor vision and make it think it had moved.
Ditto. I dont think it was necessarily to trick the rhino he had moved as it was looking right at it....but to distract it and surprise there was something else to worry about...rather than just the elephant.
i have actually seen a documentary where elephants wiped out an entire rhino herd by tossing tree trunks at them. Unfortunately when the game rangers figured out what was happening to the endangered rhinos they shot the elephants
I totally agree. As smart as elephant’s are they don’t have the sense of humour and just throwing the rhino off was his gig
The elephant puts the stick on his head like a boss and then picks it up and chucks it like , "man , I don't even need that stick" ! Then the rhino is all like "daaaaammmnn , I can't do either one of those things , maybe I ought to back up a little , here"! Lol

*Elephant:* See what I just did to that stick?. And I liked that stick too. Imagine what I'll do to you.
*Rhino:* O.O
"Stalemate with no winner" is a perfect description of this. Well done.
I'd call that a win-win type of draw. The rhino had no reason to charge the elephant except a misfire of its own instinct to simply charge whatever it feels threatened by due to poor eyesight. It didn't want to hurt the elephant, it just didn't want to die and rhino's tend to get a lot of false positives on "this thing will try to kill me."
The elephant didn't want a fight either, but by taking action early to disorient the rhino, prevented it from charging when it would have been more difficult for the elephant to stop it.
Neither one benefited from violence, and violence was averted.
Did you notice how smart the elephant was mocking the rhino with the stick on his head and then actually throwing the stick at him?
@@davidcorelli556 I don't think the elephant was mocking him. Did you notice that the rhino did not attack until after the stick fell? Keep in mind, the elephant was playing a dangerous game here, he could still get fatally injured quite easily, even if he can fatally injure the rhino quite easily.
What makes the most sense of the possibilities I can think of is that the elephant understood that the stick on his head could intimidate the rhino due to poor eyesight. Perhaps it makes the head look bigger to the rhino, perhaps it looks like horns. Whatever the case, the rhino backed up at first, and when the stick fell immediately started charging. Interestingly, the elephant then improvised and threw the stick, and the rhino backed down altogether.
Most likely, the elephant understood how easy rhinos are to confuse. It may have been seeking entertainment by picking on the rhino, or what would seem more likely is that it probably understood rhinos may be erratic about when they do and do not charge. It may have wanted to scare off the rhino just to make the area safer, rather than waiting to be potentially caught off-guard. It is important to keep in mind that while we live in safety and security, wild animals do not, and so many of their behaviors are survival oriented.
Also, it is unlikely the elephant meant to hit the rhino. It had nothing to gain and its life to lose in a violent confrontation. Very likely the elephant understood that creating sound/motion in a different direction would confuse the rhino.
They both are territorial so the elephant wasn't playing around with the rhino. That elephant is in the top 5 smartest animals on earth and you don't know if he was trying to display a horn like head. I do agree with the part about mocking him. I'm pretty sure you're correct about that...lol ..but you do not know 100% for sure. ...That rhino is smart but not as smart as the elephant. Its amazing how he balances it on his upper head and then uses it to scare the rhino. Also I would never anthropomorphise him because humans suck and animals are great.

Rhino: oh my god he's too cool ! 😰
This is the same Elephant that got beaten by the guy waving the stick.
Elephant: I gotta try this stick thing out. *grabs stick and swings it at Rhino*
This shit works!!
LOL 🤣🤣🤣
I mean, it's probably as likely as any other conclusion tbh. Not the same exact guy, ofc, but a human doing roughly the same thing. Or an elephant that did see it taught that trick. The only other alternative I can think of is that the elephant understood rhinos are easily confused, at least in a general sense, and attempted to use the stick in a manner to keep itself and the other elephant safe. It did seem to understand that even without willful provocation, a rhino may still charge and it is best addressed early. Whatever happened, it was a wild and bizarre demonstration of at least a very unlikely combination of events, at most exceptional intelligence.
the reason the rhino got so scared is because of poor eyesight. the noise created by the branch hitting the space behind the rhino gave off the illusion of an ambush
still much less power than a huge elephant, would not even need that stick, but he does not want to provoke anything thats actually the smart thing in them..
