DECLUTTER Before the Move [Part 1] || Moments of Intentional Living in Minimalism

- Come along with us as we declutter the basement and crawl space! Preparing to move, we are looking for ways to lighten the load. We are targeting six areas to declutter to: pile for the movers, pile to move ourselves, donate, sell, trash, and stuff that belongs in other rooms.

(page 10 for the four baskets I use when I declutter)
Decluttering led to a minimalist life which is now leading me to intentional living. My minimalism journey started with decluttering and extreme decluttering so that we could prioritize quality time together without the clutter and the anxiety caused by clutter. We also wanted to reduce spending and debt. Now, more and more moments of intentional living are finding their way to the surface - prioritizing the most important things to us - each other.

If there is ever a time you want to be a minimalist, it is when you move.
You have been working so hard on the crawl space, for so long. It’s going to be so satisfying to see it empty. Please show it totally empty. I need closure! 🤣🤣🤣💛
Hahaha 😂
😂
Yes, please! 💖
Me tooooo 😂😂
Yup!!!
I love the way you two interact with love and patience. I learned a lot just watching.
True! I would have been impatient and agitated like 'can't you watch those pictures later? We have do much to do!' Erica's reaction is so loving and relaxed!
A year ago, I would have been frustrated, rushing him, and annoyed. I feel authentically happy now that intentional living is my lifestyle. It’s been a great year for me.
Decluttering before a move is the best! Our last move, I decluttered and assigned homes for everything before moving. Then, I packed them in boxes by specific location ie "nightstands", "white cabinet", "dresser" etc. Unpacking has never been easier! It took me less than a day to unpack. Highly recommend this method!
@Intentional frugal girl good luck with the move! i just subscribed to your channel and best of luck with growing it!
I always laugh at the hand full of thumbs down. Like what is there to dislike here. Real people being themselves and offering some handy hints, suggestions and motivation. Good luck guys.
Oh Erica I love watching you guys decluttering. And you look so happy since Andy is back home! You’re doing it together!!
Erica, you're amazing for having started your journey (and not giving up) by yourself while being a "single" parent. And it's so awesome that Andy is on board with you also! Love your videos and love that you keep it real 😊
Thanks!! It’s been amazing
ERICA ....you are busting with joy peace beauty ....your family has been BLESSED by all your hard work ....THANK YOU for sharing such beautiful intimate moments
Love this, we almost bought a new house (they didn't accept our offer) so I started decluttering the basement as if we were going to move. Excellent way to declutter even if you don't end up moving!!
Daddy/ daughter moments! So sweet.
This is SO satisfying to watch. Great to see the unneeded/unwanted stuff go. Well done! I also love how you included the joy of father-daughter moments and viewing old photos...that is the end game after all!
Favorites - wifey & hubby working together, daddy & his little girl, Ranger and his buddy playing! :D
Ericka, one of my favorite things about your channel is how you model respect for your husband as he joins you in this journey. You two are a stellar team!
What a great feeling of freedom you’ll have with NOT just moving everything along with you to your new place. Well done👏👏👏
I love when you are REAL in your videos, thank you!
Hi Jo!!
If you can live without it for 3 weeks............
Worth thinking about.
A good consideration, although during a moving season it is unfair to judge things like hobbies or luxuries that you gladly forgo to survive moving. 😊 I know that has been my experience.
@@EmilyHercamp17 exactly. Especially for military, required professional books papers, equipment and speciality uniforms are needed, just not within the first few weeks.
Yes it's just worth asking the question.
@@rosiehoy4736 right on!
Wow. Just wow. It's incredible what the two of you can do together :-)
Teamwork makes the dream work!
I’ve moved so many times...as you’re dividing up everything into sections, I highly recommend putting painters tape on the floor to designate areas. You can even write on the tape to label it: “movers”, “3weeks”, etc. That way no one is confused and anyone can help put things in the right spot or move things out quickly.
That is a great tip! 😳
Thanks!
I should add, the same technique works for the house you’re moving into. Often movers will stack boxes all over a room. If you know where the furniture will go, you don’t want boxes placed there. Use painters tape to mark off the floor space where you want boxes to be placed. And of course, tape up a sign with the name of a bedroom so that boxes with that label make it to the correct room.
Can I just say thank you so much for your service to our country! The sacrifice you make on our behalf is great and we all are indebted to you! Also thank you for sharing this video. I can’t tell you how much it is helping me on my journey
Good luck, Erica! 🙌 We move into our new home TOMORROW! My husband and I calculated we have moved 44 times between the two of us, so hopefully this is IT. 😂
Wow!! You need to write a book with moving tips.
Erica Lucas Best tip is to get rid of all the stuff so you need to move as little as possible! 😉
When I have been collecting ++ I can’t have my husband help because it’s too overwhelming to make choices to sort. The fact that Andy is able to enter in and help you shows me how more relaxed you are. I can relate to that. Ps. Your summer clothes are 2 sizes to big. I know it’s a time thing but just saying - you’re slimmer. I’m moving too! Watching these to motivate me before the realtor pictures get taken. Thanks for being you.
Thanks! I am more relaxed and I am healthier!!
Yes!!! It's very noticeable that Erica is slimmer!
Ducky ❤️
I'm so encouraged by the amount of stuff you started with. I love watching you go through each box. It helps me decide about my own stuff so much.
Well done! Pack a 'survival kit' with kitchen basics, kettle, mugs, basic bedding, toiletries etc. to make first night in new home easy. Then unpack all boxes as quick as possible to shorten stress from moving.. Number boxes and make list with number and description because there is so much stuff to remember and a list makes for one less thing to try and remember. I am probably talking to myself for future move after learning lessons from bad moving experiences. You have done so well with your declutter and organise process and I admire your hard work and tenacity.
I do believe he took his time for reflection because he knew you had it in hand. Thumbs up for teamwork and trust.
Ericka, you look SO PRETTY in this video!
Praying your new home doesn’t have a cruel storage space, bordering on criminal, storage space!!
Great work guys!!
Glad you are working together 😊
Your children look very happy. Well done mom
those mixing bowls are the best....stainless steel anything is so much better than plastic for health reasons.
I like our glass ones.
They absolutely are the best !!!!
I'm a glass leftover container and glass mixing bowl person 🙂
@@EricaLucasLoves I like glass too, they can go in the microwave :)
WOW!!! .... All that stuff in your basement scared me. But then as I was listening to you and watching you and Andy and the dog and your daughter and how you calmly sorted and tackled everything, it made me feel really really good. You rock! Thank you for sharing your life and giving me new energy.
PLEASE don't ever stop doing your videos. I know that at some point you will feel as if decluttering no longer needs to be such a huge part of your life. But I really enjoy your personality, wisdom, and humor. I love Andy too and the two of you together! Come up with whatever content you want after decluttering is done, I'll watch it!
Remember to pack a first week box with paper plates, paper towels, regular towels, basically the things you need for dinner and living
love watching this series- esp since I'm watching your unpacking and further decluttering at the new house.
Wonderful to see in a young family! You are amazing.
I'm with your husband stainless steel mixing bowls are THE BOMB!!
OMGosh you have a huge journey ahead of you, but I have no doubt as I have followed you on your journey this year that you're going to do great. love seeing your smile, I'm so glad you guys are doing this together.
I declutted before my last move, I don't miss anything. I feel so lighter and I really question what I bring in now. Keep up the good work.
I feel like the crawl space is your Everest. Once this it's done the rest of your house will be easy because you've managed to get so on top of it. I foresee that Andy will get into the attic and say trash it all 🤭
I was waiting for these videos, is so satisfying watching the crawlspace get empty.
It’s so satisfying to empty it!
You got this Erica and Andy!!! So much fun watching you work trough it together. What a motivation it must be having the hubby around!
Happy to see this continuation of your journey, *together*. I’m a recent subscriber but have binged many, many, many of your videos. And I love your channel. 😊♥️🌿
❤️❤️
If time and energy allow, consider scanning through the things you plan to transport yourselves, and determine if you will actually need and use these items while you are waiting for your delivery and unpacking of the rest of your household goods. Remember how freeing it felt to vacation with less stuff.
Oh, the boys look so much like him! The more I see his mannerisms, the more I see it! It's so cute!
I am finding out that there is a lot of stuff I want to get rid of. The more I get rid of the more I feel I want to keep less and less. This makes me happy. Thank you for sharing your life and your family. It’s helped me so much to watch your videos.
Was told by my daughter that she was going to get the spare room “situated” today.... you have now been integrated into our everyday family life... Love it!
I’m with him. I live the mixing bowls!!
I feel for you we have our Ets move in 2 yrs and we are planing already and decluttering and reducing ours is going to be from Germany to our forever home in the US
Y’all inspired me......get rid of my crap before I move lol!! Thank You!!
Your progress has been great!!!! I've moved more times than I can count and I think that has kept me from being a hoarder! Every time I move I go through every single place in my home.....kitchen, medicine cabinets, closets, laundry room etc... clean out and discard. When moving day comes packing is a breeze. It's ultra organized because the trash, unused, not needed, miscellaneous items are gone. If something manages to slip by me, it winds up being removed in my new place, during the unpacking. You're going to feel SO GOOD in your new home when you're all unpacked and completely organized!!
Girl I was watching this and made myself get up...we cleaned out my kids closet.. looks so much better...need to go to thrift store now lol
Boooooom!!! Well done!
I’ve been decluttering different areas of our home even though we’re not moving anytime soon. It’s so refreshing seeing the excess go. I know exactly what is in our storage locker and our storage room. We don’t have a ton of stuff but there’s more work to do.
Your eyes are lit up with so much happiness doing this declutter with your hubby, it’s impossible not to smile along with you ❤️ good vibes from New Zealand 🌿
Erica, you are such an inspiration to me. You're such an intelligent, articulate, sweet and funny person and I love watching your journey as I am on my own! Thanks for the great content and congrats on the gifts of peace and intention that you have given yourselves! 🌈🌤🦋
For our last move, we had planned to declutter before moving, while we were still house hunting and hadn’t seen anything close to what we wanted for a while. After 2 1/2 years of trying to find our first long term home together (I was starting over post divorce) we suddenly found “our” home and were offered a 30 day settlement. YAY! But in between, we had a pre booked 4 day conference to go to in another state, followed by starting to make some headway on our packing and decluttering, then BANG, child #2 was hit by a car crossing the road to the school bus - so life froze for a week while he was in hospital and had surgery. I had to do most of the packing myself, so apart from the really obvious items, decluttering was left by the wayside and ALL THE REST OF THE STUFF/CRAP came with us. Never, EVER again will we move house and drag unwanted, superfluous stuff with us - especially as our next move will be a major downsize, sans kids (young adults) - just us and the fur babies, more land, less house and a semi-minimalist lifestyle (I am not a “minimalist”, but I am looking for a nice balance somewhere close to that, but which works for us and our hobbies/interests/lifestyle - eg. BOOKS 😂).
Just wondering, is this process easier or harder, faster or slower, with Andy helping you? You look like a great team and I admire you guys for managing this with young kids and a big doggo to distract you. 😊
Love seeing you both so relaxed, making decisions, enjoy the kids and dog, towards each other. That basement, the pit of horror all those months, it's getting empty!
Thank you Erica to share your declutter Journey with us!!
It's every time a mutivation for me because we also moves in 6 days and sometimes in the past I would stop my declutter... but I make a break, watch your video and get new power to go on 😉
Thank you!!!
I've been waiting for this video! Would love to hear more of your interaction as you declutter, but that's just my preference. I love decluttering for moving!
Noted!! We did more today and recorded our chats. :)
Love seeing the two of you doing this together!
You could have a gallery wall with some of those photos in the new house. Love your videos!
Can't wait to see the rest of your decluttering and packing videos
How precious the shots of your husband and daughter! Love your teamwork.
Your hubby is so good at getting back on track. Mine would pull all the photos out, wander off and leave them scattered around for me to decipher what's keep and what's go.
Edited to add: Sunday night a shoe fell out of my wardrobe and it had mould on it. It's a built in against an outdoor wall. Luckily my clothes weren't affected but hubby lost his ski jacket and a few other things. It was on some boots but I've managed to save my favourites. It prompted a clear out and we got rid of 3 bags of clothes!
I love your channel!!! You are very professional and are doing a great job. I love your sense of humor 😄🤣
Been waiting for this! So excited :)
👏👏👏👍🏾👍🏾
And I think we should all live by the...how many New Items You Bring in your Home after you get Alllllll the Clutter Out....

Of your house for...DONATION or. give away or Yard Sale ....
That keeps! your house Rooms......garage... basement . .attic crawl space. ....Uncluttered.😊👍🏾👍🏾✌

Wow! That was an incredible amount of work in one go.
Erica, you guys are doing a great job. So much done this time through. Love watching these. Cheers.
You know you’ve had a long day at work when the book on “Trekking” (4:41) looks like “Twerking” Lol. I actually thought you had a book on twerking and I had to rewind 🤣
😂💕
Team work makes the Dream work! 💪💪💪

Wow great how you two work together... And you are so positive, relaxed and happy!... A new Erika... I am so happy for you! Brilliant job! Looking to seeing "round 2"
Well done both of you! Looking forward to the next episode 😊
You guys rock! We have been through 5 moves already( in 9 years) I always purge before moves and after.
Can’t wait to see part 2! We are trying to declutter too and sometimes it feels like we are constantly in the ‘it gets worse before it gets better’ stage. Will be good to see all the progress you have made!
Stress free teamwork, well done xx
I like watching Andy fold stuff. A shirt in a recent video and the navy blanket in this one. You could have a whole episode on folding 😂
I have just started watching you Erica and watching the beginning of your journey made me tear up. It was so obvious how hard it was. I too have had those feelings of being overwhelmed.
It so wonderful to see the change in you, the joy and the calm and peace you now have. Well done. You truly deserve it. So very pleased for you. 😀
Great job guys!
Wooo well done! 🎉🎉🎉
Hi, I am new to your channel and really enjoying how honest and sincere you are. You and your husband are doing a great job. Lots of hard work going on xx
Thanks for being here!
You both did an amazing job! Way to go!!!
Good luck with the move Erica!!!
Once you close up a box label it with a date. If you don’t open it in six months you must not need or you didn’t know what was in there and you’ve bought another one so without opening it, just take it to goodwill. I too was in the Navy for 10 years and moved a lot afterwards and found this to be a great way to keep clutter from accumulating and forced me to be more intentional about what I brought into my home.
Scan the photos. They are super cheap to reprint should you want to hang one and change up the space and you can have them in a digital frame or as a screen saver.
