I'm about to embark on a new community for my customers. Your whole Q&A was really helpful because you are where I aim for my future! I also really get the not wanting to offend people. I'm in the marriage space and deal with therapist so it's extra dicey and scary... they have all the extra fancy words when they get angry or upset!! haha It's so validating to see you also deal with the murkiness of various topics. :-)

I recently discovered your videos and want to say thank you! Over the past couple of weeks I began my minimalist journey… and it is life changing! I had never realized how much clutter was suffocating my life. I was paralyzed. Simplifying and decluttering is helping me through my trauma and I really can’t thank you enough! One thing I'm realizing about what I choose to watch on UA-cam is that no matter the subject matter, I need to enjoy who is presenting it. I honestly don't care WHAT you're talking about. You're just such a great personality that feels so pure and light. You could talk about your favorite letters of the alphabet and I'd probably still watch it.

This is so true! I’ve recently seen a couple other UA-camrs that I follow kind of talk about the variety…or lack thereof…of topics on their channel and they said that if they don’t post certain topics or use certain keywords, the YT algorithm just buries their videos. Personally, with the UA-cam personalities that I love enough to follow & subscribe to, I will watch literally every video they put out, and I like having some variety…not just ALL decluttering bc it’s branded as a minimalism channel or whatever.

Boy, is that true! Even though I found it a little jarring when I turned 60 (I'm now 63; took early retirement at 62), the sheer relaxation that I ended up feeling as a result of achieving so much life experience was wonderful. I could finally let go of unrealistic life goals and focus on the ones I really could achieve (many more than I had realized after I let go of the unrealistic ones), as well as interests I could reactivate after they had gone dormant for decades. I feel freer now and more creative than I have in many years, although I must admit it's taken me a year of being retired in order to fully detox from work-based life and settle into a life entirely based on me-time (I'm single with no family, in case that sounded selfish).

I am an adoptive mom of two siblings from Sierra Leone. I was 50 when I adopted the 1st at 8.5 yrs old. 60 when we finally got his 16 yr old brother, and I was a widow by then. Best decisions I ever made. Adopt based on your age. Those older children are totally worth it and very focused on their new opportunity. Bless you and any one considering older children. They are a known proposition, much less a mystery than an infant!

I'm 54 and I thought I was too old to adopt. I know I would have to adopt, and older child and I worry about all the problems they will have. You didn't experience a lot of issues with an older child?

    • @carolwinter3092
      @carolwinter3092 Рік тому +2

Jennifer Brown is right, these kids can have serious struggles. The caution is to keep your eyes and ears open and know what you are willing to deal with. My point is that just as a both child can develop serious issues, so can an adoptive child. But with an older child, you get a look. With a birth child, you take lots of additional risks. Children are a leap of faith either way.

I've been homeschooling for 7 years now. Every single person that I know personally that was against homeschooling, has since told me how grateful they are that I am. One of those people even asked if I would be willing to school their grandchild just to keep them out of public schools. I have found that most who are against homeschooling are against it because they are uneducated about it. It has been a huge blessing to my family!

I will also comment again and say that I do really think that middle schoolers and highschoolers need their moms and dads around just as much as when they’re toddlers and babies. It’s just for different reasons. I think a lot of parents think when their kids are older they can do a lot more stuff and be out of the house more and not see their kids, but your presence is definitely needed just as much. I say this as a mom of a 14-year-old, 11 year old, four-year-old, and eight month old,

    Greetings from Germany! 🙋‍♀️
It is very interesting to see and hear about your normal every day life because it is different in so many ways to our "normal" in Germany- especially homeschooling, which is not allowed here, but our school-system is totally different too. But there is so much more different, e.g. the cooking, baking, traveling... So everyone has different perspectives and believes. I love to get a small view into your life and chance to "look over the edge of my plate" (german saying 😉). People all over the world love you and appreciate your work. Thank you for all that, especially your honesty and kindness. ❤❤❤

I’m and “old mom” who adopted a baby at 40. Having a teen in my 50’s was stressful and much harder than if I had been younger and that stress impacted my health. As usual, your judgement is sound and thoughtful. I didn’t know I wouldn’t have my normal resilience after menopause so it’s great that you remind people about age and energy levels. So many kids deserve a safe environment to grow up in and the older ones often get left behind.

So what if you have a lot of apps. If they make your life better who cares if it isn’t considered “minimal”. I quilted on the longarm while I listened to you. I just want to share how much you changed my life. While I've been a Flybaby for over 20 years (Flylady system) that got the house in order, but as Marla says, "You can't organize clutter." After I retired from the military, I stopped purging our things each time we moved and oh my, the STUFF! But I've gone room by room, closet by closet, and drawer by drawer. Do I miss any of it? Nope. But more than teaching me to declutter, you've taught me lessons on how to deal with stuff as it comes into our home. I still have loads more stuff than a minimalist (I'll never be one), but it's all manageable for us now. And thanks to you, I discovered Cass and Dara and they have helped me as well. You're an angel! So Merry Christmas and thank you for everything!

Talk about under-selling and over-delivering! I purchased the Bundt Cake Book in the description to support Dorothy's work with women and kids in Mexico, thinking from Dawn's comment in this video that it might be a typed 2 to 3-page handout with Dawn's favorite bundt cake recipe and no images. Turns out it's a beautiful, 49-page love letter to Bundts!!! ; - D The cute photos are so inspiring, and the recipes combine store-bought cake mix and pudding mix with creative add-ins and scratch ingredients for ease and convenience. And just like Dawn, the writing and graphic design are cheerful and inspiring. So impressive!
I never know if Dawn ever sees these comments--especially on older videos--but this was such a nice surprise, and such a kind thing for her to do to help support a woman doing good work in the world. KUDOS to both of them! ❤👏❤👏❤👏❤

I’m a decade older than you and I wish I’d started realizing this when I was your age. The more I experience life, the more I understand that any opinion I have most likely has a very valid opposing idea. We have a newly turned 13 year old girl who came to our home about a month ago. Currently we have 9 (usually 10) in our home! It’s pretty crazy around here 🤪 BUT my husband even questioned the other day, when only 2 kids were home and it was super quiet, about what are we going to do when all the kids leave the house. This is our 8th and oldest foster child and it’s nothing like I thought it would be. She’s great and not scary at all!

Idea about money spent on self-care: We hear all the time about the benefits of self-care, but the one thing we don't maybe think about is that we are usually helping to support a small business owner when we do. Nail salons, massage therapists, etc., all have bills to pay, groceries to buy, etc. When I get my nails done(which is rare) I think of it as a donation. Hope this helps someone!

I'm 28 and i feel so blessed to get to watch you on your journey. You are easily my favorite youtuber. It feels like i get to have a glimpse of what i can expect from life 12 years ahead as a mom, wife, and a on my minimalist journey. Especially because my kids are about the same age difference from each other as yours are. I know the youtube journey will probably end someday, but i am not eager to see you go! So glad at this time that you are enjoying pushing your message cause i love to hear it! Also, as someone who has always had a dream to pursue youtube one day whether hobby or career, i know it can feel disheartening when new viewers aren't always flowing in, but you teach me new perspectives, ideas and tips all the time that i believe the Lord really wanted me to hear whether it's about faith or minimalism, or just life. Please never feel like the subscriber count equals the importance of your message. I really feel like this may be your Ikigai.

When it comes to big events, fundraising and things that require a lot of sweat and energy in addition to planning, I found that when you delegate, you get more done. Ask for volunteers in your church, ask for friends and family members if they can contribute some time, equipments, materials and money if at all possible. Plan out what it will look like after everything is done. Do this months or a year or 2 in advance. Research resources just to get as much info as possible and if you can pay to do some things even better. If not, designate time for each task. Buy things ahead of time, even if more things become available latter on. Colors, designs are seasonal. Once they are gone, they are gone. Better be safe than sorry. If they come back better, you can always add to update. Constantly, hold meetings to keep volunteers motivated and see the progress they have made. As much as people want to do something, not everyone goes all the way to the end, if any. I speak from experience. Hope this tips will help.

I love you Dawn! You will always have a draw to your subs! You will learn as you age what is right for yourself. I'm 62 years old and have had basal cell cancer surgery very close to my eye on my face and just recently a cyst removal off my top lip. You learn what is most important. I printed all the all recipes and have them in a notebook in plastic sleeve covers. I had a very good friend that would collect donations or make purchases at yard sales of clothes to take to Mexico, he was their Santa Claus. 👍

I was feeling a bit sorry for myself ( not to mention that I am in extreme pain) and decided the best thing for me to do now would be to watch one of your videos ! One of the best advice one of my good friends gave me in regards to friendships was you don’t have to wait until somebody likes you as much as you like them to be their friend just invite people to do things with you because you like them regardless of how much they like you back. I thought that was great advice it’s like oh that’s so liberating just be friends with people because you want to be regardless of how they feel about you. Also I loved your purse tour that was the best one I’ve ever seen it was seriously hilarious and great and simple and so not trying to sell us on anything that’s so real. And Doesn’t make me feel like you’re trying to sell me on something

Thank you for being so open and honest. Practicing minimalism was very helpful for my family in October. We had to take an emergency trip to Canada to see my grandfather who was passing away and we had less than 24 hours to prepare and leave. With a 15 minute spontaneous house clean and a few minutes to pack for the family we were able to do it. My husband and I have a 3 year old, 1 year old and newborn. So spontaneous trips aren't always easy. But minimalism made it happen and happen smoothly. Thank you Dawn for your advice and being so helpful.

As a mom with h a 19 and 16 year old who have gone through and is going through youth group, the age of the leaders does not matter. It's the leader's heart that matters. I'm so thankful I stumbled on to your videos!
I have felt....unsettled for awhile. I wasn't sure why, but I knew the amount of "stuff" in our home, attic, and garage stressed me out., even things I didn't see on a regular basis (i.e. attic stuff), but I struggled getting rid of things. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong, until I started watching YOU. I felt that you were speaking the very feelings and frustrations I was living. You made me realize WHAT was wrong, but even better, HOW to start changing it. And I didn't feel stupid, attacked, or like a failure. Instead you made me feel hopeful, and like there WAS and IS a light at the end of the tunnel and I was capable of reaching it.
You have influenced me, and I seek out more of your wisdom in order to keep moving forward to improve our life through owning less. You are the friend we all need 😀
Also, your sign off is so special. We all need to hear that someone somewhere loves us! ❤️

For example, I'm probably old enough to be your mom, I don't have any kids other than my fur babies, I live in the desert southwest, I'm single, and my spirituality is different from yours. But, other than all of that 🙂, I so relate to your lifestyle in terms of the elements that have sometimes been part of mine and the grounding that you have, which is part of my own life. Thank you so much for being strong enough to share your vulnerability in this video. ❤

After 10+ years, my husband finally has a job that allows us to travel/vacation. We actually just got back to southern Michigan from a trip to Minnesota - visiting friends who moved there last year. Other than driving through that wicked snow storm Friday morning, it was such a joy to get away as a family! Not only are we making memories that will last them a lifetime, we're also helping them to see how they don't need stuff to experience life. Family vacations are the best!

I first saw you decluttering clothes when Gage was just a baby & i went back later & watched every video. couldn't get enough. your minimalist ideas have changed my life. thank you.

Dawn, I don't pay too much attention to the titles of your videos. I watch your videos because of you, your laughter, your smile, and of course all of your encouragement to push forward with minimizing the amount of inventory we have at home. I also enjoy your explanations about the psychology of minimalism. You are a very smart woman, and a terrific counselor! I've always leaned towards minimalism (although you would not be able to tell from all the stuff we have), but you make it fun and easy. Sometimes I stop the video because I feel inspired to seek out the things that are causing clutter in our house, then I return and finish the video, LOL! Even my husband is starting to pare down his inventory! I think your plan on doing this while it is still fun for you and helpful to us is valid, and your choice to drop down to once a week is healthy. So while you continue to present content, thank you. You have been a huge help to me, and a source of comfort during the worst of the pandemic. Btw, your kids are awesome, so you must be doing something right! Happy holidays to you and your family, and all the best in 2023! 🥰
