P.S. Last week my Verizon internet connection had an outage in Mineola New York from 3 am in the morning until 12 noon. A 9 hour outage. My streaming radio service was down. Having an AM radio signal still allowed me to listen to the news and had there been an emergency I would still be informed. Again, having a backup can't hurt. It could save lives!

    AM
Radio has served me for decades and is still my primary radio source of news, weather, and spoken-word content.
AM Radio serves me and many others: (1) You can get local content 24/7; (2) You can get longer distance coverage, especially when driving at night - overnight radio on strong and/or clear channel stations helps keep me awake and informed; (3) It is the chief, sometimes only, venue for on-the-air caller interaction with hosts and guests to stimulate public discussion of issues; (4) It is cost effective for locally-produced topical programs - there are so many, and they change as businesses and individuals come in and out of the broadcast market; (5) It is cost-effective for local advertising for local businesses, organizations, social groups, and churches; (6) It is not expensive from the broadcasters’ side to operate, and thus can provide narrower casting to serve the public with varying and sometimes specialized formats; and (7) The technology is simple for the receiving side - and I, along with countless other youngsters, first learned how radio works with crystal sets that only work with AM, never FM, so the medium is the most educational.
Perhaps most universally vital: AM radio requires the least energy and technology on the receiving side, and thus is the best medium for broadcasting public safety warnings, advisories, alerts, the like. Storm warnings, for example, are just one hugely important function of AM radio. You can run an AM radio on a battery for months, without connections to anything, in homes, cars, boats, or the middle of nowhere.

I'm 70 and have listened to AM since I was born. It has more benefits than you think. When a major weather event is forecast, you can tune into the cities that are experiencing it at that time to determine the severity and preparedness needs for your area. On more than one occasion, I have recharged batteries and done other actions to prepare for it. Another (seemingly odd) use of AM is determining how close an electrical storm is. The volume and sharpness of static crashes along with distant lightning will assist in finding storm distance. Find a "dead spot" on the AM dial and have the volume at a low level. As a storm approaches, the time between the static crashes and visible lightning will decrease. Yes, online weather radar does a good job, but if there's an outage only a battery operated AM radio works. Thank you Steve for the video. Some people think that AM is dead. It can be a lifesaver.

Here in Highlands County, Florida, we have 730 AM WWTK. At daytime it's pretty good but at nighttime in certain coverage areas we have a very powerful station broadcasting out of Tijuana, Mexico on the same frequency making it this far to our County with a pretty strong signal. And this can make listening at night unbearable. The FCC will not let WWTK move their frequency in order to get away from the problem. Yes power lines are definitely an issue here as well but when there is a very active electrical storm 25 miles away, it just totally obliterates the signal, regardless if it's day or night. This is why I have absolutely no enthusiasm for the AM radio band. Besides, a lot of these station are now moving their "AM" programing to the FM band.

Here in Mexico in my home town we only have like 8 am stations and all news reports

Unlike other bands that travel horizontally, the AM (Amplitude Modulated) signal travels vertically which enables its long distance ability. The AM commercial band and low band government, municipal, and emergency services frequencies should be maintained and utilized. The AM signal will still be heard when all others fail.

Too be fair here I get your point. Hear me out problem I have with AM and FM you don’t always have local DJ’s talking bout things going on in your region besides playing music. Most of your stations DJ’s are syndicated out of New York, Texas, California. Why would I wanna listen to things going on in other places other than my hometown state? I can understand something major however I don’t wanna hear about grandma giving away free cookies on Wall Street when I’m in NC does anyone get my point? Here online you have that opportunity and you can listen to Rush Limbaugh Howard stern talk show sports online. But least if your local radio station their voice is only heard on that station has a special feeling you can relate to. Like a DJ once said covering a major wreck on a interstate. She said instead of complaining bout being late or it’s taking to long be thankful you get too go home tonight when others in the wreck won’t get that opportunity. Thankfully 107.5 WKZL and 92.3 WKRR still gave local DJ’s yeah of course you can get music anywhere but a great outstanding down to earth personality isn’t something you see everyday

The only radio I ever listen to in the car is AM, for news, talk, sports, info. At home, never. When I do listen to music, it's by way of satellite radio, MP3 player or computer/internet, cd's/records, and my vehicle's infotainment system with a flash drive of thousands of songs that I choose. I cannot remember the last time I listened to FM. But I do remember having to listen to 15 minutes of commercials just to hear the same three lousy overplayed songs. By the way, satellite radio is well worth the subscription. You cannot get anything even close to the quality and variety on FM as it is now.

I for one dont see the need for AM radio, in mid-coast ME it's garbage, always has been for the past 60 years. My first car was in 1975, AM had about a dozen stations and none of them had good sound, today it's nothing but garbled staticky sound, while FM is crystal clear all over ME. So if they get rid AM in cars I could care less and it's a none issue, people need to focus more on todays real issues not this antiquated has-been AM radio!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it works fine, because your EV car maker, had taken the percussions to minimize the interference engines (and other things) in EV cars make
Not all of them do that, for some (like Tesla) its easier to remove AM, then to fix the noise the car is making
Remember, your car might have AM now, but if we don't step up, your next car, might not have AM anymore

SUPPORT THE BILL TO REQUIRE AM RADIO IN ALL CARS & TRUCKS ! AM / FM Radio is REQUIRED for Every Emergency Broadcast system, and ALL Local highway emergency broadcast system. AM & FM Radio stations are required for all local mass communications for all states. Foreign car makers planning to flood USA will static emitting poorly shielded electric cars - BAN THEM. Refer back to FCC rules that required the ATARI 400 and ATARI 800 to have Metal shielding to block all RF radiation.

Sorry Mr. Forbes, but I think you're preaching to a very small choir. The viewpoints of a 76 year old billionaire have little relevance to today's generations who have grown up on the likes of cable television, cell phones, Apple Music, and Spotify. They gladly trade a small subscription fee for a higher quality audio experience, a lack of endless ads, and broadcasting whose scope hasn't been widdled down to religion, right wing talk, endlessly repetitive news, and sports talk. They're simply not interested, and most don't own or use a separate radio or tune into AM in the car. And I find it odd that all this talk about the importance of emergency uses for AM never discuss the fact that a very small percentage of people have anything but an AM car radio and that only very few stations have the capability to withstand a true emergency like a direct hit to the transmitter from a tornado, hurrican, or nuke, etc. As for AM's importance to other parts of the world, you should know that the AM medium wave bands in Scandinavia and Germany are no longer in operation. When I look at the miniscule number of comments on this video, it tells me that very few people care one way or the other if AM survives or not.
