It is simply a privilege to see these two legends share a stage. Gene, I'm sure, had the time of his life playing with Buddy, so close to the end of his own life.
Gene Krupa is a true pioneer of drums and Buddy Rich has amazing speed and technique, it is a complete matter of preference of who is the better one. I enjoy so much how the two guys enjoy the drumming and the mutual respect that they have.
When I watch this I see Buddy working hard in deep concentration, demonstrating technique. Gene however, looks like he's creating music. He has joy on his face. Gene wins the, "Playing the simplest, most basic solo," part of the battle, sure. That's true. Buddy, on the other hand, played with both technique and sophistication. As someone who played drums for over a decade I can honestly say that Buddy buried Gene here, and Buddy was holding back out of respect for his friend. (Buddy was devastated when Gene died, he loved him like an older brother that he looked up to.)
I don't understand this whole "Gene got destroyed" idea going on in the comments. Gene and Rich are apples and oranges. Gene never tried to be the most technical drummer out there. He was known for playing to the music like no one else. Buddy Rich on the other hand was known for being a chop heavy technical drummer. I don't think anyone won the drum battle Buddy out chopped Gene but Gene played an actual solo. If you think chops are all you need to be a good drummer then you are sadly mistaken.
Robert Rodriguez I have to agree with you - Gene Kruper's solo is a lot more musical than Buddy Rich's which just goes hammer and tong for speed and technique... personally i preferred Krupers solo...
Hypnodelica Right there with you. I love Buddy Rich but at times I find his solos hard to listen to. Don't get me wrong they're impressive to watch but I would much rather here Gene play a little big noise than Buddy Rich take a fourteen minute speed solo.
I'm not dissing Buddy either - i've seen jaw-dropping solo's from him on other videos, some of which were VERY musical too - but this one just felt more like a technical exercise than a musician expressing their soul... On this video Kruper plays it funky and that's the way i like it... To be honest most of the time i'd rather listen to a funky drummer like Zigaboo Modeliste or Clyde Stubblefield than someone with more technical skill but less groove...
I’m surprised the stage didn’t collapse from the sheer weight of awesomeness it was holding. Those three Alone have more talent and class than about 80% of current “musicians “ today.
I love Gene and Buddy and their drumming. Totally different playing styles that are each totally wonderful and totally excellent in their own way. And yes...I am a drummer.
2:46 Even though buddy is my favorite drummer, I do personally think that Gene's solo was better because it was more musical. But this, the speed, the almost invisible accented hits with his right hand when playing the ride, the on Point tempo, truly amazing.
Both fabulous and different. I think Krupa is actually a bit more innovative. That stick thing he transfers with is beautiful. But wow Rich is a force of nature! Just a pleasure to see them together.
What's the point of being the most musical in a drum solo? Might as well not solo and just play to accompaning music all night like dingo starr. A solo is a solo because that's when a musician can let loose and have complete freedom of stage time. Hence the concept of jazz at the time also.
@@DG-sf9ei What's the point of a musician being the most musical while playing music? That's the entire point. It's why they're called musicians, not speed guys or finger movers.
Watching them both is like Ying & Yang.........Different color of music brought to the kit, yet equally fulfilling. God bless both their souls. What they brought to the table is legendary. 🤘🏼❤🥁🥁❤🤘🏼
Bud had the technique, no doubt, but there's something about playing with soul like Gene does here. Love both drummers and both drummers admired each other's playing, too.
I saw Buddy play in the early 1980's. This type of music was new to me as I was in my late teen's/early 20's. I had heard of him before and Gene but hadn't heard their music. These two prove how awesome they are in this video. I didn't notice Sammy Davis Jr. at first in the background. I bet that was a fun show to be at.
As a professional rock drummer watching videos and basically being schooled by these two guys has made me a much better drummer today only the 1% will probably reach this level of play I salute you Buddy and Gene
This wasn't a battle! Just two of the greatest percussionists the world has known showcasing their extraordinary talents and styles! Truly gifted men the likes of which come by our way perhaps only once a lifetime!
Man two of the greatest drummers in history, I get goose bumps watching this and both of these guys I’ve learned as much as I could about them anyways 🙂
Gene is definitely my favorite of the two. Buddy did a lot of technical things, but man, I'm just not feeling it with him. With all of Gene's recordings I really love every second of them.
Snavels yah well buddy was faster and more technical in overall better.. Even by his own account gene said it about buddy .. but taste is indisputable really. I love rich lot better than gene
Tap dancers don't watch each other, they listen to each other: When they "steal" from each other, they don't cop the moves, they cop the sounds, as they consider what they do to be percussion-playing, with their feet. Notice what the Greatest Tap Dancer in the World (at that time) gave, as an accolade, to these two master percussionists, arguably the two Greatest Show Drummers in the World (of all time): He took off his tap shoes, and gave them each one.
Yes, as I mentioned. Sammy acknowledges, " I CAN'T FOLLOW THIS, let along beat it. These boots are the tools of my trade. Look guys, one each. Out of respect I concede my tools to acknowledge your mastery (as you perform the stage of my show). " How's that for humility?
As a kid in the late 60's, I remember watching Johnny Carson. Whenever Buddy Rich was on, it was always treat, magical. I didn't realize at the time what I was watching was the fuel, early blueprints of the foundation which would propel my ship, a life in a world of music to follow to this day. Those of you who get this, know it's not a matter of choice. Simply put, Buddy Rich was a major catalyst in and of my life..One of the "Big One's"..
What a great video - this has taught me a huge a lot about what music is really about, and what a solo is really about. Buddy Rich is obviously more technically impressive, but I enjoyed Gene's performance more because it had more heart and humour in it (that isnt to say its better or worse - I just happen to prefer it).
Nobody 'destroyed' anybody here. When a pair of masters play off of each other for fun like this, we the audience reap the benefits because we are watching something incredible. This is true entertainment.
@Locktwiste72 THEY'RE SHARING both the stage and THE SUMMIT. Yes, it's lonely AT THE TOP where these artists are. We, mere audience members get to savor the greatness of the moment (and SAMMY was no slouch on the skins either)
I got to see Buddy Rich live in 1970 at a concert in the Carter Barron Amphitheater in Washington D.C.'s Rock Creek Park. At one point he pulled a slat back chair over and played it for a few minutes. It was absolutely riveting. 😮😮👏👏👏👏👏
I love this!!! A friendly rivalry between two amazing drummers!!! No “I am going to shoot you later”… No “my crew is harder than yours”…. 2 talented drummers and Sammy Davis Jr. not trying to keep it friendly… He is into the beat and having as much fun as the “rivalry” drummers!!! How did we get so lost in the last 2 decades??? Thank you for an amazing video!!!!
Thanks for this great video. The speed of Buddy's single strokes is always amazing to watch. I had forgotten that Buddy would crash/strike cymbals from the bottom on his up swing too. I think Gene was know for that trademark stick click too where he clicks his sticks together with one of the tips on the snare head. I can still remember my junior high band instructor showing me how to do that back in the 60's. That Big Band swing sound is a very hard style to master with all of its swings beats and shuffles and quarter note triplets and independent left hand control and base drum and high hat foot control. Anyone who can truly master all of that stuff I put in the category of a professor in their field of study. Very impressive.
I'm not a professional drummer, but I have played drums in the past and know my way around any stringed instrument and I would like to refer to the great Ginger Baker. I don't remember the exact quote but he made sure to stress that these are not drum battles, but just drum duos. No one was out to seem better than the other and I think by looking on their faces this is made clear. Of course there is competition between Gene and Rich but I don't think in any way this was a competition to determine a winner and a loser. I think this was simply a chance for 2 legends to show what they have to offer one another.
Baker was an incredible drummer and I’ve always valued his opinion about drumming. He had very interesting things to say about other drummers of the day.
Buddy had enormous admiration and respect for Gene, whose showmanship put drummers on the map for the first time and, in a trickle down effect, eventually increased their earnings. Buddy's physical ability put him in the "once in a century" class, along with violinist Jascha Heifetz, pianist Earl Wild, and hitter Ted Williams, and perhaps Roger Federer. His solos are amazing displays, of great interest to fellow drummers, but are neither narratives nor poems. For the latter, we must turn to Jo Jones and especially Big Sid Catlett. I hope people have heard them or at least heard OF them. Gene was a terrific big band drummer. In his prime, his technique was quite good but he was not a natural. Throughout his life he always sought to improve. He went to Juilliard to study with NY Philharmonic timpanist Saul Goodman and even when old and sick he was working with Jim Chapin (I think). The best drivers of big bands ever were Chick Webb, Dave Tough, and Jo Jones--bar none. And Buddy and Gene would be the first to agree! Despite their own fame, they remained respectful of true excellence their entire lives.
Krupa was an amazing drummer. His talent led to a cascade of talented students. I should think the talented Peter Criss has paid homage to this great individual. Comparing talents creates a battle as to who is best - and best at what? Krupa was in his own right, a very gifted musician, developed a style that people of his time related to. His style with the drums was huge and has longed been remembered by those still around of an era gone by. His process of developing a style will live on with those who want to learn the true techniques of a dedicated artist.

Walt Likker ...And he’s clearly loving every minute of it - talk about a front row seat!!
And Sammy could play drums too!
Sammy should have joined in, he was quite the drummer himself!
Robert Rodriguez Especially considering this gig was rehearsed not a single time
Robert Rodriguez I have to agree with you - Gene Kruper's solo is a lot more musical than Buddy Rich's which just goes hammer and tong for speed and technique... personally i preferred Krupers solo...
Hypnodelica Right there with you! People forget that it's all not all about the speed. It's the feel that's important.
Priceless! Thank you kindly for sharing
I’m surprised the stage didn’t collapse from the sheer weight of awesomeness it was holding. Those three Alone have more talent and class than about 80% of current “musicians “ today.
Buddy has a tremendous technique and speed, but Gene has Soul and Feeling. He was so deep and so sweet in his delivery, not roaring but groovy.
I love Gene and Buddy and their drumming. Totally different playing styles that are each totally wonderful and totally excellent in their own way. And yes...I am a drummer.
Q : do you know what a metronome is?
A : A little short guy from the big city.
God bless Y'all.
uasuka.
He who laughs last thinks slowest.
ba boom cha!
Have a great day.
God bless.
Q:do you know why guitar amps hum?
A: They don't know the words.
2:46 Even though buddy is my favorite drummer, I do personally think that Gene's solo was better because it was more musical. But this, the speed, the almost invisible accented hits with his right hand when playing the ride, the on Point tempo, truly amazing.
Good point.
@@DG-sf9ei go listen to a Steve Gadd or Dave Weckl solo
Two of the greatest to ever play the instrument, in a video that is important history. Let them never be forgotten.
Watching them both is like Ying & Yang.........Different color of music brought to the kit, yet equally fulfilling. God bless both their souls. What they brought to the table is legendary.
🤘🏼❤🥁🥁❤🤘🏼
2 of the greatest drummers ever.....many of todays drummers site Buddy Rich as their inspiration.....just sheer poetry in motion...
What a historycal moment of drum playing. Two greatest legends. Rest in peace for both legendary men.
I came here to hear Gene Krupa go Boom-boom bap-bap-bap boom-boom bap-bap-bap
And so he did!!
Bud had the technique, no doubt, but there's something about playing with soul like Gene does here. Love both drummers and both drummers admired each other's playing, too.
Three class acts on one stage.
Thank god for videos

You could almost see the fire in Buddy’s eyes when he watched Gene play...
As you know Jazz Drummer are on a nother level.
This wasn't a battle! Just two of the greatest percussionists the world has known showcasing their extraordinary talents and styles! Truly gifted men the likes of which come by our way perhaps only once a lifetime!
THESE TWO GUYS ARE THE TWO BEST DRUMMERS EVER👏👏👏👏☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️✌️
Buddy rich could leave anyone in the dust, amazing drummer
Real talent!!! Real musicians!!!
Man two of the greatest drummers in history, I get goose bumps watching this and both of these guys I’ve learned as much as I could about them anyways 🙂
"Buddy Rich, the greatest drummer who ever drew breath" - Gene Krupa
Too bad he never heard Neil Peart !!
Chris Hershey agreed. But Bonzo the best ever. Pearl #2. Love them both.
@@chrishershey4012 Peart was a fine drummer, but didn't really compare to these gods
Buddy Rich never played in a Rock Band so how can you even compare the 2 ? You CAN'T. Both Masters at their Craft
"Elvin Jones wasn't bad." - Me
Simply amazing talents & musical trailblazers.
"Gene is absolutely the first man when it comes to drums." -Buddy Rich-
Thank you you tube for presenting this great video 👍😎
Buddy beating that snare like it owes him money!!..Damn!
Sammy's conductor, George Rhodes. Best I ever played for.
Yes, KRUPA 🌠
Musically Gene is the better drummer.
Honestly for me ,music in Krupa drumming, technic in Rich
Im more of a G K. Guy too yep
WOW!! What a showcase of these two legendary swing drummers' chops! These cats are cutting heads!
Tap dancers don't watch each other, they listen to each other:
When they "steal" from each other, they don't cop the moves, they cop the sounds, as they consider what they do to be percussion-playing, with their feet.
Notice what the Greatest Tap Dancer in the World (at that time) gave, as an accolade, to these two master percussionists, arguably the two Greatest Show Drummers in the World (of all time):
He took off his tap shoes, and gave them each one.
Yes, as I mentioned. Sammy acknowledges, " I CAN'T FOLLOW THIS, let along beat it.
These boots are the tools of my trade. Look guys, one each. Out of respect I concede my tools to acknowledge your mastery (as you perform the stage of my show). "
How's that for humility?
🔵AND THEN ALONG CAME RINGO, GREATEST DRUMER OF ALL TIME. MEMBER OF THE GREATEST MUSICIANS OF ALL TIME, THE BEATLES.🔴
No battle. Two great players having fun.....
The term is “More Musical”. We all love chops but not when the music suffers.
Ooh... They enjoyed enormously. From someone who can HEAR to another. And back. Respect, joy, exhilarating.
If you close your eyes and open your ears, you will hear better who really makes the drum speaks: Eugene Krupa.
Gene Krupa!!! The WORLD'S GREATEST DRUMMER!!!!
Great drummers true masters of their art
Playing the craziest stuff I ever saw. Wearing suits and ties. Not breaking a sweat. That’s seriously amazing drumming. Rich was a total beast.
So much talent in both of these awesome drummers!
Your writing was respectful
I like floyd sneed alot since him aldridge and bellson pioneered the double bass configuration
...more than simply GREAT drummers....GREAT SHOWMEN.....style, panache, flair....you can see how much FUN they are having....
@mike strawn,John Bonham favorite drummer was Krupa,Krupa had a heavy influence on bonham.
Amazing!! Both are such legends!!
Two of the greatest drummers that ever lived. Even the great John Bonham said these guys were his heroes.
Nobody can fucking beat Buddy Rich’s all out speed but I love the WAY Gene Krupa plays
