The killer of laminate counter tops is moisture which can eventually infiltrate under the stainless sink lip or at the faucet hole and reach the compress board backing under the laminate. I find it good practice to run a coating of silicone around the vertical edges of the cut sink hole and the faucet hole to seal the edges against water. I also like to run a bead of silicone around the underside lip of the sink, rather than relying solely on the rubber sink gasket. The gaskets do break down over time. Keep the water out and your laminate counters can outlast expensive stone counters and the laminates are more everyday friendly with minimal care.
Another excellent instructional video! After watching quite a number of your house improvement videos, I would say you are consistently one of the best, most thorough video teachers out there. Your explanations are always clear, and you frequently get into specific potential problem issues that many videos just gloss over. I have learned a lot from you. Thanks, Shannon!
This is such a professional DIY video, I'm extremely happy to see it. What a great job! Clear audio, clear video, NO BACKGROUND MUSIC (thank you!!), clear speech, clear instructions, and very good pointers all the way through. A classic! Thank you very much!!
+Lass-in Angeles thanks for noticing, we do put a lot of time and effort into providing good videos. We've seen many videos with bad audio, bad lighting, poor instruction, etc. so thanks. Please subscribe and thumbs up.
Shannon, I've watched a number of your videos over the years. NOW...I'm actually installing a SS sink in a laminate counter top for my garage...."man cave-ish". You, more than anybody else...offers actually great insights into whatever process you're describing. No just the step by step stuff like others. PRACTICAL suggestions in real world situations. Keep 'em coming...WHO KNOWS what job I'll be doing next... In most cases, I bet you've already done a video to show me HOW. Great work.
Another very informative video... You really should be teaching in some trade school Shannon. The way how you explain things are so simple and clear. Thanks
thank you for all your videos. every time i have questions about projects around the house i can always find a house improvements video that show step by step instructions. thanks again
Your my go to guy . Remodeling a home I bought that was built in 1932 and remodeled slowly from 1968-75 . Now it's my turn in 2018. Love your videos. Thank you
You should use plumber's putty around the sink bowl. Also around faucet base plumbers putty. This will prevent the counter from swelling with water, and future bacterial growth.

I like to refer to your videos sir. Not only are you a good installer, but also doubled with a very good teaching ability! Thank you.
If your sink doesn't have the foam strip around the perimeter you can check out SinkSEAL also. Very few sinks come with a sealing gasket (in the US anyway) and SinkSEAL allows you to seal the perimeter without silicone/caulk/putty. It can be found on Amazon.
Good job again! Im from Vancouver, I lack the confidence to do some of the things you show until I see the videos. Im a finish carpenter but always like to take on new challenges.
Excellent tutorial video Shannon. Thank you. I appreciate your explanations as to why you do what you do because it helps we viewers to understand the process. I've also viewed several of your other videos. I've come away with more knowledge, and for that, I thank you.
Thank you for the informative videos, Shannon. You have definitely raised my confidence level. We are having to renovate our kitchen due to recent water damage. Keep up the good work. BTW, at certain angles, you resemble the actor Jude Law.
Hi Shannon and greetings from the land down under. I was researching making glass splashbacks and come across your vid.. Im pretty happy with my work installing sinks... But im even happier now as i picked up a couple of extra tips to make things run smoothly 10/10....👍 Seriously you have such a cute accent lol.... Amanda Perth WA....
On this next step video, i like the stencil card board/tape trick as it makes it much easier not to screw up transferring the correct hole size into the counter-top for the sink. Though if a black mark on the tape wouldn't bleed thru i would enhance the pencil marks with a marker on the green tape before i cut because i tend to sometimes miss a light pencil mark.
Very helpful video. Thanks. You might want to give a little more detail on 'tightening' the clamps. Many sinks recommend a clip tightening sequence to avoid sink damage.
I was not aware this type of blade was available. When installing a stove top years back, I used a regular blade but taping the cut area prevented chipping and cracking. This blade would have made the job easier and less stressful. Thanks.
Shannon, One tip that is worth mentioning is when getting a drain assembly, try to avoid any type that creates a double strainer situation. I noticed on this drain, the top piece has a strainer, but the bottom also has a few cross pieces inside, creating a double strainer. The problem is that any debris that gets through the first strainer may get t get trapped on the second one. It should not be an issue with this one too much, as the second strainer is larger than the first. I have had to replace drain assemblies whiched clogged up all the time due to the second strainer trapping debris.
THANKS, I've watched other videos on this put your video was the easiest to follow, very helpful, I can now go do the installation with confidence. I clicked on the like button and subscribed to your channel. God bless
Awesome Video. I am staring down a project like this soon. I appreciate the good quality instructions and clarity of your video. I feel like this is going to be easier than I had imagined now. Just subscribed. Thanks for posting your videos!!
Yes and if your really good about it you shouldn't need any plumbers putty or caulking around the kitchen sink because of the rubber border strip that was under the peeled off sticker paper. Also the built in flange takes care of not needing plumbers putty on the drain of the sink as well. Metal clips hold it to the counter top as well as the sink faucet when it is installed.
I think that you can also use a vacuum pump to hold that piece of laminate from above the counter (minute 10:50 ~) instead of bending over in an un-comfortable position. that way, you could also use your strong hand with the tool, and have a choice of what hand to use. better options... one small reservation, I never tried it, there are no laminate counter tops where I live, only marble is used for the kitchen. so I am not sure that a vacuum pump will hold that piece...
HouseImprovements I would just drill a second hole with the spade bid in the center of the cut out piece for my finger to go thru to hold it at the end of the cut. ;-) Great videos! Keep em coming.
Thanks for the reply. that is the tool I was talking about, but did not know what it is called exactly. I thought that it will work on any laminate surface, it is good to know that it will not work on textured laminate. thank you!
In case anyone is still reading this comment, put a scrap piece of wood (1x2 or similar) across the counter so that it extends several inches in on both sides beyond where your sink hole will be. Screw it down to the part that's being cut out. Do this after you're most of the way finished the cut of course. Once you've finished the cut, simply lift the wood and cut-out section off the counter.
I thought the template looked a little crooked too. Perhaps adding a think strip of wood behind the template at the back base would ensure that the sink is lined up straight. But, thanks for sharing. If the hole is not done properly because the wood was cut out half an inch away it allows for imperfections. There may be a need to saw off a pinch now and then. My carpenter always seems to make a slight curve at the front center line out towards the window. Maybe he does this to make sure that the sink is snug? Or, to compensate for an imperfect cut?
I want to see how they install the old version which they used a putty or silicone to stop leakage on the countertops, your show is 100% perfect but we need what is needed or appropriate to our country philippines.

If this were my house, I would paint or water proof the exposed edge of the particle board countertop. Eventually, water seeps underneath when seals dry up and then the countertop is not protected. Not sure if you have a tape for this or paint is best? I have a question - I have to install a sink in my RV laminate countertop. I want to do an undermount install. The hole is bigger than the sink I've found. It is bigger in length only, not depth. The sink is 6 inches smaller than the countertop! I don't have much choice since it is hard to find sinks with 4-6 inch height. I don't have clearance below for a higher sink. Do I need a new countertop? This would be a major pain to redo. Please if you have any ideas, or anyone else does...??
Hello. I really enjoy your how to videos. Very helpful. Anyways I am trying to install a glacier bay sink drop in sink in my quartz counter top. The supplied clips aren't working out too well. The little teeth wont grab the underside of the counter and slip off when tightened. Can you or any one else here recommend a fix for this? Alternate clip that works with glacier bay sinks? Thanks !

Excellent video and instruction for a variety of "in countertop" installations. Thank you.
Great video on the sink install Shannon. Love the color on the walls and cabinets too.
An easy solution to your one man sink job is using a suction cup made for large windows to hold the piece of countertop while you make your final cut.
Yup, I did have one at one time but found it was just 1 more thing to carry around
HouseImprovements That makes sense and if you can accomplish it with your hand then might as well go that route for convenience.
Also, your tape job is superb.
