    This is a real Explorer...body on frame, rear (or 4) wheel drive. But I admit, I'm biased...grew up in the 90s when these things were all the rage. I remember a '95 Explorer Limited stickered for around $40,000. Seemed insane at the time

    I have a n 04 explorer w 154440 mi on it, and it just made a "clanking noise" and died on me , and cost me 76 dollars to get towed home ,and now proudly sits in my driveway like a brick!!

    There’s so much hate for this car but mine has 133k miles and it’s still powering on strong. I have done a couple 1000+ road trips in it and it cruises fine and hasn’t had any engine issues yet. Transmission is finicky but at the end of the day mine hasn’t completely broken, only acted funny. In all honesty I only hate the crappy gas mileage but the rest of the car is great for me.

    My 2004 Explorer has only 51,000 miles. You forgot to mention the ever present crack that runs through the ford emblem on the tailgate that affects 90% of the explorers.

    • @kingjlinza
      @kingjlinza 4 роки тому +1

      These are cheap for one main reason, the transmissions. The transmissions are known to be problematic, which is kind of a shame because I love the looks of it and the engines are solid (I have a 2010 Explorer Sport Trac with the same 4.0 L V6 that this particular Explorer is equipped with and I can say that it’s a good engine, the 4.6 L V8 one of Ford’s best engines).

    Speaking of competition, the highlander was physically smaller than these, and this was more of a Dodge Durango and Chevy trailblazer competitor than any other. American brands, made in the US, unlike the Highlander and 4runner which were both built in Japan. And Toyota intended for the Highlander to be a cheaper, on road focused alternative to the 4runner, which explains why the majority were front wheel drive with the Camry's 2.4 4 cylinder engine.

    I have a 2004 explorer xlt with 212k miles on it. The tranny has an issue where it slips between 2nd and 3rd gear, and it guzzles gas like a motherfucker. But I still love the car and would still purchase another explorer once I drive this one into the ground.

      Update: now approaching 240k and still running strong. Replaced a solenoid in the transmission and now the slipping issue has disappeared. I actually managed to drive this beast from Boston MA all the way down to Phoenix AZ and also visited San Diego.
      Im hoping I can keep it going till it gets to 300k.

    • @trca101
      @trca101 4 роки тому +1

      @@sson386 Do you know if the solenoid replacement is a common cure to this transmission issue? How much did it cost to replace? What a great journey... I hope to buy one of these and make some journies like this.

    • @sson386
      @sson386 4 роки тому +1

      @@trca101 it's one of them. The other is servo rod that's between 3rd and 4th gear. As for the solenoid, the part itself cost 200 dollars then another 400 for labor, so that's entirely dependent on your mechanic.
      The trip was definitely amazing, I highly recommend taking one if the opportunity ever arises.
