- Long before the Sanibel Causeway came into existence, its starting point on the mainland had already garnered quite a story to tell. Punta Rassa, Florida's colorful past includes military conflict, critical communiques and cracker cowboys. By the late 1800s, it was already established as one of the area's earliest sport fishing and tourism destinations.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

So cool to watch this! I grew up going to Sanibel every summer with my family.
i moved to florida in 1969 and the punta rassa mudflats were known for good shelling. i still have my collection of crowned conchs i collected there. many schools also made field trips to study the unique ecology there.
I worked at Sanibel Harbour back in 2001. Always loved the history of Rassa
I lived at Punta Rassa. Loved it there.
i would of never moved I have a second home 20miles away .. i visist from palm beach 3 times a years .. love la punta

I remember watching the causeway being built, my dad said that was the end of Sanibel and Captiva as we knew it.
