DIY lip balm / lip gloss videos have been popping up everywhere lately so I decided to make a long compilation featuring 5 different DIY ideas! The first DIY was, of course, inspired by RCLBeauty101's Lava Lamp Lip Gloss. In most lava lamp DIYs, the coloured part is made from coloured castor oil, so I decided to make a "reverse" version using white gloss against tinted glycerol. The flower jelly gloss was another DIY I'd been wanting to do for a very long time, and I was really happy with how they turned out.

*Glycerine/glycerol is a thick, non-toxic and odourless liquid used in medicine, cosmetics or baking. You should be able to get it from pharmacies around the world...it's often sold as a sore throat remedy. The bottle I used in the video was from a baking shop, so you can also check specialist cake supply stores.
** "Fractionated" simply means coconut oil that stays liquid at room temperature and you can get this from large health food stores or online. This is a great substitute for glycerol when making lip gloss. Melting regular coconut oil will NOT work for lip gloss since the oil hardens at room temp. However coconut oil is great ingredient for DIY lip balm (below).

If you're going to be using these as cosmetics and not display items, please bear in mind that the homemade ones are going to expire faster than the normal cosmetics as they don't have a stabiliser or preservatives. :)

@Maqaroon I don't think you should be using Eye shadow if you use Edible glitter when you make Lip gloss
not all eye shadow is safe to ingest!! cosmetic grade and food grade are two very different things! PLEASE be careful if you decide to make a lip balm using eye shadow - better yet, if you aren't sure that it's safe, don't do it at all!
also while tealight candle wax probably isn't going to hurt you just spend like five cents more and get wax actually intended for cosmetic use, if you want to make these. it's nontoxic but you're gonna wind up swallowing some lip balm if you use it and the stuff that goes in your stomach should be as safe to consume as possible. paraffin wax in candles isn't always food grade, and it's difficult to ensure that it is. Maqaroon has said as much in another video, as well.
i like Maqaroon's videos, but there are young people watching who probably won't consider exactly what they're putting in their bodies - if they saw a well-known UA-camr do it, it must be safe, right?
Hi! Thank you for raising a good point! I personally feel that it's important to look at the bigger picture of all the things we expose our bodies to, and things that we put inside. An absolutely tiny amount of eyeshadow or wax on your lips is not going to harm you even if it's not technically "supposed" to be ingested. Swallowing things is less dangerous than many people think because stomach acid simply destroys a lot of stuff. Anyone who has been around a baby/toddler will know that they try to eat or chew so many non-food items around them, yet all babies grow up healthy!
I also feel the idea of "safety" is often used hypocritically. Technically, using makeup for eyes on lips may not be "safe" from an absolutely objective standpoint but there hasn't been a single documented case of anyone being harmed by it. From a scientific viewpoint, breathing in traffic fumes or cigarette smoke is incredibly UNSAFE (100% proven to cause cancer) yet people still do it every single day and nobody judges others for "walking around outside".
Candle wax is actually paraffin wax which used to be added to chocolate and all kinds of food. It's also used to give gummy bears/candy a shiny look so pure paraffin wax is definitely non-toxic. However I do advise people to stay away from coloured or scented candles since those probably contain chemicals/colouring which are not intended for human consumption

while i don't suspect anyone will wind up in the hospital from using eye shadow in their lipgloss, a few select colorants in some eye shadows can be rather irritating to the stomach lining. there are definitely cases of young children vomiting or experiencing episodes of diarrhea after ingesting a parent/relative's eye shadow - of course, these were usually in instances where quite a bit was swallowed before the kid's caregivers saw what was happening.
while no-one has exactly been killed by consuming this kind of make-up, i could see it being uncomfortable if someone puts a little too much pigment in their lipgloss and realizes too late that it contained something that would upset their stomach.
while the stomach and the contents thereof are remarkably resilient, people should still know the risks of putting something potentially abrasive in there.
i understand your viewpoint here, but don't entirely agree. exposure to fumes is a necessary part of many peoples' lives. they can't choose to not drive to work. they /can/ choose to not put something in their mouth if they learn that the something in question could make them puke. even small amounts of an irritant could have unexpected results on someone.
people want to make the things you showcase in your video for fun and recreation. it's for entertainment. while the average person is absolutely exposed to a ridiculous amount of "hazardous" substances on any given day, the knowledge that something else could make them unwell may help them avoid introducing any /extra/ irritants to their body.
additionally, some people experience allergic reactions to particular colorants in eye shadow. while i'd assume most people would know if this is the case with eye shadow they actually own, i can see a young person perhaps using their sister's eye shadow to make the lip gloss in this video. and i think sometimes reactions manifest very differently internally as opposed to externally, i.e. someone might have such a small reaction after applying a product to their skin that they don't even notice it, but upon swallowing, the reaction may effect them more prominently.
i'm really glad that you do tell people to not use scented or colored candles! still, while paraffin wax is generally very safe to swallow in small amounts, not all candle companies actually use food grade wax in their products. many do! but not all. the water and other components used to process these products may not be up to standards for consumption. i don't think anyone will get sick from using a tealight candle in their lipgloss, but people should remember that candle wax isn't intended to be used as a foodstuff. candle /= food is common sense, but again, i see many children and young teens who watch your videos. they may not consider that what they're putting right up against their mouth may not have been processed in a way compliant with other things they swallow.
i hope none of this sounds accusatory or aggressive! the fact is that you're absolutely right in saying that these lipglosses have practically no chance to actually cause harm to someone. but people should still know that these products carry some potential risk.
still, a McDonald's burger is probably worse for the average person than the lipgloss you showed in this video lmao.
i just think people, especially your younger viewers, should keep these things in mind.
We don't actually know if exposure to chemicals leads to birth defects and all adult cancers are all "lifestyle" cancers meaning they are caused by exposure to toxins. Autoimmune disorders are on the rise as we are exposed to more and more chemicals and we don't know a dose limit on most toxins. BUT we do know that lead is very dangerous and is in many products found at dollar stores and we know that ingesting lead directly leads to brain damage 100% of the time depending on the blood level.
There are other options. I just watched Kims to see with she while I was disappointed to see she did used one eye shadow she otherwise used lipsticks to color her glosses and sealed the "fun" part of the project away from the usable portion.
Your logic about exposure is fine for yourself but you shouldn't' be using it as a basis for developing projects for other people to apply to their faces and lips without clear warnings in every video that this is likely not safe.

A small tip when using these applicator bottles - I never push on the roller ball top with my palm or anything else! It can push the roller ball deeper inside the mechanism, and can even break it. This can be a pain to fix once it's inside the bottle. I use my thumb and forefinger, and grip the sides of it firmly, then slowly push, increasing the pressure till it pops it into place. You can also employ a gentle twisting method.
I learned this the hard way when making my own perfume rollers!

Hi! Yes that's most likely the reason! If you live in a warm country then any type of coconut oil will be liquid at room temperature. You can still use it for lip balm because the wax will make it turn solid :). Or of course you can also use it as lip gloss instead of the glycerine.

Replace the wax in the video with the candle wax
I would suggest instead getting paraffin wax that is meant for canning jars, as even white candles can have some weird, toxic sh** in them. I burn a lot of candles, and quality always varies. You're not meant to eat them (or apply them to skin), so they're not made food safe.
Alienda Septia Well I mean there is a method of moisturizing hands by dipping them into melted candle wax and peeling it off, so I imagine the same could be said for lips. Just make sure there's no bad chemical stuff in the candle wax

Can you use maybe Baby oil instead of Glycerine or Glycerol??
전정국 Mar Mar방탄소년단 I'm pretty sure glycerin is heavier and baby oil is lighter so as long as the base is heavier it should be fine but IDK for sure. maybe olive oil as base and baby as the top layer?
