In this video, I walk through how to change your rear differential fluid. The job is super simple and recommended for heavier vehicles or high mileage vehicles. In my case, I just did a re-gear and needed to change out the oil.
Tools & Parts Needed:
24mm 1/2" Socket amzn.to/3IfOnPM

80W-90 GL5 Gear Oil (~3 quarts) amzn.to/3xURqbo or 80W-90 GL5 Gear Oil 1 Gallon amzn.to/31pGR4u
Crush Washer Set amzn.to/3Et2bUS
Optional:
Hand Pump (or buy 3 individual quarts and pour it in like my video shows) amzn.to/2ZXLulx
Torque Spec:
Fill Bolt - 24mm head - 36 ft/lb
Drain Bolt - 24mm head - 36 ft/lb
Capacity:
2WD: 2.75 liters (2.91 US qts., 2.42 lmp.qts)
4WD w/o Diff. lock: 2.45 liters (2.59 US qts., 2.16 lmp.qts)

TIP : Always check the rear axle vent valve/tube for blockage. Mud can easily clog it, if the hose hasn't been extended. Most vent valves are located on top of the axle housing , to the left side of the fill plug. Clogged up vent can blow the seals out and lose fluid. Thanks for the great videos ! edit I had to learn that the hard way and replace a seal AND bearing. ALSO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT : DO NOT TRY TO FORCE IT OFF to replace it. The valve CAN break off ! Then you have a major problem. Vaccum it out with a turkey baster etc.
I have it extended for the gas cap :)

I just did mine. It was a full quart low! I added the quart it needed and drove it for a few miles and drained and filled it. I plan on doing it every 50k

Just bought a 1996 4R 4wd manual trans with 140k miles.
It's a rust belt car, so there is some rust, but not terrible.

i gotta find someone in my area to clean off all the underbody rust !!! then maybe i can get to the rear differential ! so hard to find anyone to clean undercarriage rust...I dont get it...dont people want to make some money!! i would do it but im a female and im 63 and work full time 6 days a week..im tired !! lol....great video !!! if anyone reading these comments live in the so burbs of chicago and can clean underbody rust as good as PHORUNNER... please respond to this comment !!

If you google 4runner rust problems ,you will see why. They won't take the chance of being held liable if a frame snaps or front wheel breaks loose. Certain years, rust from the inside out. FRAME not body ! Lawsuits are everywhere because Toyota scewed up but refuse to be held accountable. GET IT INSPECTED ! The rust can create dangerous problems. According to what year it is. edit inspected by someone who is aware of the frame rusting from inside out. It can LOOK solid but be ready to literally break in half.
@@allenh7835 thanks for the info...i have a 98 4runner and a 97 rav4... both were looked at by a toyota dealer...they said yes there is a lot of rust but frame not rusted thru YET.. so thats why i want someone to do the major scraping off of the rust.. toyota dealer had it up on the lift so i know they wouldn't put it up on a lift if they thought it wasn't safe..thanks for your info thou

I've some some things on my surf after watching your videos.
Have you done a front diff oil change. I can't find the drain and fill plugs.
Also when i did my breathers i couldn't trace the old front diff breather hose back to the diff so i just connected onto the end of the old breather hose.

Never knew you needed to change the reae differential gear lube. Thanks for the video. I was always thought to fill gear lube from the drain hole until the fluid comes out from the top. Do it until you see fluids coming out the top hole and all the air bubbles are gone. I think if you fill from the top you'll actually add air bubbles into it and filling from the bottom will push all the air out the top. At least that was the way we did it for outboard motors.
Glad to help. What you are stating only applies to outdrives on boats. Not for trucks. I do that for my volvo outboard.
Generally, you don't need to change the fluid since like i mentioned, my dad has gone 300-400k miles in each of his trucks without ever touching that oil lol! he has a 1985 red (engine died), 1986 blue (engine died, fixed, then sold), 1985 red (this one is fresh rebuilt so likely new fluids) lol.

I think also the outdrive has issues getting oil into certain places so doing it from there bottom helps fill those cavities. Not so much an issue with these differentials on trucks :)
Thanks for the tutorial. Not for nothing but torque is measured in pound-feet, not foot-pounds.

Should be fine with either. The first number is the cold number and unless you’re in freezing temps, it won’t matter. The spec is 80w90 though per the manual. 75w90 is for the transfer case

It’s from the factory service manual. You can find it online if you search for it.

Thanks for putting together this great detailed video. If I am doing the rear differential fluid change only, you stated that I need 2 crush washers Part # 121157-10010. Does the fill and drain plugs use the same washer?

I’m in central Cali. About $500 per diff if you drop off is what the price is usually.

I did it myself :). Find a gear installer in your town and read some reviews. Should have someone nearby
So my 4 runner is very rusty, it seems to have a leak somewhere on the back, can it be leaking from that bolt that holds on the PBrake line??
Hey, this isn’t at all related to the video but I remember in one of your comments on a video you mentioned your drum brakes in the back were sticking? I’ve been having some symptoms that make me think the same, and I was wondering what you did to identify the problem and solve it? Did you replace the drums? Reman them a bit? Replace the shoes? Thanks!
I took a temperature of the drum after a drive and noticed the temps are significantly hotter on the driver side than passenger. I haven’t taken care of it yet but I suspect new pads and resurfacing the drum or replacing them and new hardware would solve the issue. I tried lubricating the hardware but still same problem

I tried va online gear oil and it drive loud, change back to RedLine and it runs good again. How do you rate Lucas gear oil?
I can’t tell the difference to be honest. I used the cheap supertech for break in and didn’t notice anything either
For the front differential is same gear oil?
75w90 but I run 80w90 also. Close enough.

i had 2001 4 runner i'm the first owner.. low mileage 115K.. no accident still in good shape interior and exterior..do you think i can instal the same tire and wheel on my 4 runner? already lifted 2.5 inches.. thanks again bro
Might be real close to the upper control arms if you go 285 size tire. If you wanna play it safe, I’d try 285/70/17 instead. Might still be close unless you get aftermarket control arms
Can I use also de Mobil 1 75W-90 or is better the Lucas 80W-90?
Don’t think our Toyotas are gonna care but spec is 80-90 in rear

Can we use 75-140 full synthetic I happen to have several quarts? Temperature down here is 107 highest to 97 on average in summer!

@@PhoRunner I got the right oil. Not gonna use this stuff I had. Do you use a friction modifier with it? My F350 Diesel it's recommended to use that friction modifier with

Yes. Just oil capacity is slightly different for non locker diffs. Check my description.
The rear diff on my 2002 has start to leak from the top above the fill point.
Sounds like rusted through. Try some jb weld as a temp solution while you source a new axle. Better if it’s an elocker + axle
@@PhoRunner i have a Chicago Electric 120 volt welder. I will drain it, sand all the crud off and weld it shut.
