I graduated from veterinary medical school in 1976, University of Pennsylvania. I am retired now. Looking back at the extraordinary effort it took to become a veterinarian; I wouldn't of done it. I practiced for 11 years in a rural area. I hated it. I was not in a good place mentally in practice. I took a job as a Veterinary Medical Officer, USDA, supervising meat inspection. I did the job 29 years. I think it saved my life, set hours, good pay, medical insurance, paid vacation, sick days, 401K, and a pension. The job was satisfying even though superficially it might not seem so. I felt like I was saving lives insuring wholesome food. My classmates generally were cliquish, jealous, ruthless overachievers. I only associated with a small group. When you get into the clinics; you need to prepare as best as possible for your cases. If you get exposed as unprepared during rounds; the professors will focus on you and subject you to more intensive interrogation in subsequent rounds. The story didn't have a completely happy ending. A forklift knocked me off a ladder in the plant. My left femur was shattered, comminuted fracture, at my left hip joint. It made me a cripple. I kept working until 65.
This video came up right on time. I’m still trying to figure out what path I want to pick. I know being a vet isn’t always pretty, but it’s something I’ve always had a passion for. I’m honestly considering zoology too, but I don’t know :(
I'm fresh out of high school and soon heading to college to get that basic aa. Becoming a vet is definitely something that I am considering for the future but at this point I'm very unsure. Your video gave some very important insights to the life of a vet/vet student that I will absolutely have to consider. Same goes for your how to become a vet video, very useful. All in all, I simply hope to be in your place in the future, thank you.
I’m now in college and I’m starting to be unsure about becoming a vet technician. I already have my certificate of vet assistance but I feel like I’m wasting my time. To the point where I don’t even wanna attend a vet school.
@@ChristianGonzalez-qu6fs just after a while some people think about the career path they want to achieve. As much as I love animals, I can’t see myself as a vet because 1. I suck at science 2. Math is not my cup of tea 3. I studied soo many times in my vet terminology class and still failed all my tests plus all my folks want is me to be in the medical field, when I keep telling them the medical field isn’t all I want. Yea there’s a high demand but not everybody can be in the medical field
@@co0ley2k1 Yeah I totally get you on the math part. I'm absolute dog shit at math but its quite the contrast for science, at least with what I've experienced so far. I'm hoping I can keep my science end strong while learning to get better at math( I never put much effort into learning because I was a dumb kid). Knowing that though, I think I want to attempt this path and see how I find it. If it's not for me then I will change, but hopefully success finds me of course.
This reasonated so much! From a fellow vet student (I'm in my 4th yr too. In Australia) to another, thank you! I needed to hear this! Best of luck to with your studies and future career as a Dogtor!! ❤👏🍀📚
Great video! Im currently in my gap year after finishing high school. My whole life have been centred around becoming a vet (I sure did make it my identity, wops). Now I'm very unsure. I've been questioning if it's the right decision for almost a year now. In my country vets have the highest suicide rate. I have been talking to other vets to get some insight. The support system is very bad, and so is the salary. Where I live it takes about the same time to become a doctor and a vet. So I'm leaning more towards human medicine. It sucks to let go of your life-long dream, but I don't think vet med is the right decision..
Hey! I definitely agree with the other response, there are always options oversea or in different areas. You can definitely achieve your dream if you want to :)
I feel you, this is what happened to me. I'm sad every time I remember the dream I let go and it's hard to focus and fall in love with med school, but i'm just going with it
The second reason is so true in LMICs, it’s hard to imagine from different spheres of the world. Things are changing gradually but it costed much to be a vet of early generations.
Hey! I’m currently in year 12 and am heading towards vet nursing however I really really REALLY want to become a vet!! The only thing that is stopping me is that I’m terrible with maths and chemistry, along with that also comes physics. Im so extremely lost and upset cuz as much as I want to become a vet I know I’m mentally not capable of the amount of study. Would u or anyone in the comments have any advice or had the same problem?? your videos are so inspiring and motivate me more and more everyday to work hard to become a vet!!!
You can’t be bad at something. All u need is practice. I still think u should shadow a vet before deciding what career to choose. After that all u need to do is push ur self for those prereqs
@@Ohjulieannee thank you! I have shadowed a few vets this year and it is what has made me realise I’ve been working towards the wrong thing (vet nursing) :)
Dude for real I’m having like a breakdown per day ✨ because I’m currently in the application process. All these things feel like a lifetime away?? Yet it could be just around the corner????? Seriously how did you deal with the application process?!?
In New Zealand I think we have a very different application/selection process to overseas, but I wish you the absolute best, keep calm and look after yourself!
I’ve decided I want to be a vet! I get the grades so that’s not a problem but I think I’d struggle with losing animals because I love them so much. Is there a vet that goes into the wild such as the savannah and deals with the lions zebras elephants giraffes etc. if you know please let me know! I really want to work with animals like these :)
