It's lovely to see someone as knowledgable as Iain, who has worked on top-end cars (such as the Miura, etc.) be so enthusiastic about what was a 'cooking' hot-hatch (205 GTI 1.9).

I can see the auction price going up in front of my eyes for the cars chosen. Lucky thing being a Tyrrell's special personal pick. If I was the owner I'd be dancing on the ceiling Lionel style.

So refreshing to have an expert who has worked inside the automotive industry for decades and to boot has excellent communication skills and oozes integrity.. Just about everything that the likes of Jeremy Clarkson isn't. Some real corkers in there and I loved the reference to RPJ and the Ford Focus RS. I had an ST and that was quick enough.. 😮

I'm gonna say it: I preferred this auction walkaround over Harry's. Harry's are just a little rushed and hectic in my opinion.

Love thee 635 csi - I had a new one in Henna red - manual box - first was left and down - absolute weapon in its day - I sold it after putting 50k miles on it - sold it to a guy in Rotherham - a year later I bought it back from him as the arrival of a baby made him need a 4 door- I ran it again for 6 months then sold it to a friend in Australia who converted it to a racing car - I believe it won Bathurst 500.

Loved this auction preview, Iain, and especially your words on the e24/635csi. Few cars beat e24 chassis BMW for their immense value: thrilling performance, supreme comfort, iconic design, and easy to maintain (though you're correct finding a rust-free example is key!). I've been hoping an M635csi makes it into your workshop, would love to see a well-sorted one taken for a drive. Thanks so much this channel and the work you and your team do in bringing it to the world!

Re the 205GTI fan being on constantly , it's the same with Porsche 924s and early 944s. I read years ago this was to prevent the possibility of CO poisoning. Later , when catalytic converters were installed in most cars, this became less of an issue.

This is why I enjoy following Iain: he isn't a high-end or exotic car snob. He can get as excited over a 30 year old Peugeot puddle jumper as a Miura. If it's well designed and built, fun to drive - that's all it takes to gain his approval.

The Maserati is gorgeous! The best thing about it is no one expects this package in a business limo - front-mid engined V8, dry sump, transaxle. And the only thing that may cause gearbox and clutch problems is quick starts off the line. Treat it as you would a manual - you don't want to floor the gas and drop the clutch in a 2.5 ton car, you'll burn the clutch to cinders. Start smooth, shift with paddles and the clutch will last up to 50k miles.

Some interesting choices among your favorites at this auction. That Champagne Gold color on the Lexus SC430 seemed to have been the most popular, but it truly suits it. I remember visiting a place called Grapevine in Texas in 2006, and I saw loads of these parked outside a high-end venue, rather than their German counterparts.

SC430 is a massively underrated car. A better buy than a comparably aged Mercedes SL in terms of reliability and refinement (though definitely not in looks!) But it's a Lexus, all you need to do is service it regularly and it will last until the heat death of the universe.

Thank you so much for this Saturday surprise Iain. Well, isn't that a coincidence as we are on to a 635 CSi actually, preferably made in 1987, '88 or '89, and in mint condition. The search is on. Many are on sale in Germany but one has to be careful of course that it comes with a full history and fully restored as it would have left the factory; no hidden or concealed issues. The've gone up in value considerably in such condition but they are still very much doable, not costing the earth. Thank you again Iain.

To me BMW from the 70’s to the early 2000’s represents everything right about BMW more so than than any of the terrible looking and overweight sedans and SUV’s today. I’m not even against SUV’s as I still think the first generation X5 looks good to this day

@iain_tyrrell funny story in Indianapolis about 1985 and 86 was a 1963 Facel II for sale at a big antique car and parts event for $5,000 that they couldn't sell for two years. The seller saw me (18 years old) the second year, remembered me and suggested that he could do better on the price. It wasn't rusty but a little faded and scratched up, worn but ok interior, and drivable as is. First one I had ever seen and thought it was very interesting. At that time they weren't really considered desirable and it was a more than I could afford. Bought a 67 w108 250S for about half that instead.

A special sort of workshop - great idea Iain. Great fun watching your footage - even though I will not have a chance to participate in the auction since I am German (which in fact may be the least reason 😅)

I had a 205 GTi the most precise steering and lovely feel through the steering wheel. Feels as settled as a big car.

I see the driver's mirror on that 308 has drooped, just like mine used to, and all the rest! Just needs a quick go with a screwdriver before every drive.

Thanks Iain - great content! As an aside bit of info - the early Ferrari 308GTBs single exhaust would eventually cause burn a hole a cause a fire in the trunk. I have seen this back in the day, to a well known artist, who had one! Hence the change to the sport exhaust system...
