  • CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison portray star crossed lovers living in different worlds in one of the most romantic ghost stories ever filmed; Joseph L. Mankiweicz's "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir." Set in Cornwall at the turn of the Twentieth Century, a young widow rents the cottage of a dead sea captain , only to discover that his spirit is still very much alive. This produces a battle of wits and wills, that eventually turns to love thanks to a brilliant cast, marvelous direction, shimmering cinematography and a luscious score by Bernard Herrmann. It's the perfect picture to warm up a cold autumn night.

    Steve, you hit the nail with this one. It is enchanting, haunting and romantic beyond measure. Gene Tierney is ethereal almost more than the ghost. And then the music is the icing on the cake. I have the soundtrack and I listen to it all the time. I live close enough to the ocean that sometimes I can hear the surf and it's nice to hear the mix of the soundtrack mixing with the real life waves. Love your enthusiasm, keep them coming.

    This would make a nice double feature with PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. Interesting that Gene Tierney (the most beautiful woman who ever lived), played a "ghost" that Dana Andrews falls for in LAURA, while here she plays a woman who falls for a ghost.

      I'm a sucker for women with overbites. Brooke Adams comes immediately to mind. Sadly, the first version of the theme from LAURA that I ever heard was Spike Jones version, which doesn't conjure up anything remotely romantic.

However, I love the sequence where you rhapsodize on Bernard Herrmann's score and you play a few bars just a little so everyone can hear pure musical perfection. Thank you. Gracias. Grazie. A+ again, Steve! Gene Tierney is in 4 of my 100 favorite movies, and you mentioned all 4. This soundtrack is simply the most beautiful ever. When that ending theme swells ( " Come, Lucia. Yes The Ghost & Mrs. Muir is indeed a very special movie. It definitely had top talent working on it. From Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, to Bernard Herrmann's gorgeous soundtrack with superlative cinematography by Charles Lang. Not to take anything away from any of these great talents but the movie almost feels like a David O. Selznick or Sam Goldwyn effort rather than a 20th Century Fox studio picture. Not to say 20th Century Fox couldn't make upper tier movies, but I think you know what I mean. There's very definitely an elevated quality level to this film. Definitely one of 20th's prestige pictures for the year. Like so many other people have commented on below, I too have a special place in my heart for this movie as well as The Portrait of Jennie also mentioned in other's comments. The two films do somehow compliment each other. Interestingly enough, Portrait was produced by Selznick. Portrait came out a year after Ghost so I wonder if Selznick was influenced by the tone of Ghost. Guess we'll never know. As usual Mr. Hayes, you entertain and educate and spur me on to diving deeper into the world of classic movies.

    Dear Steve, you're so right in every praise you give to this film - it's irresistible, and despite the superb score and the love between the ghost and the living woman it never falls into the trap of being sickly sweet. Rex Harrison, who in reality was an absolute terror with women, is so wonderful in this that you believe he only wants the best for Gene Tierney, especially when he makes her forget him. Oh, the plot and the score and the acting and the direction - it doesn't get better or more emotional than this! Rex Harrison, when he chose, could be a very good actor and I note that one of your fans here has asked you to review "Blythe Spirit", as I have elsewhere - if only to see Margaret Rutherford walk away with the film. But you mention that he was in "Anna and the King of Siam", which I too have seen, and which was extraordinary casting, physically, but I bet Yul Brynner watched it, because the way Rex pronounced "Et-cet-er-a" over and over is exactly how Yul Brynner did it when he played the role so perfectly in "The King and I". Thank you for another delicious review. Best wishes, Alida

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Рік тому

      Plus, "Anna and the King Of Siam" has two of my favorites, both Linda Darnell and Gale Sondergaard in wonderful roles. Gale recieved her second and final nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her lovely, subtle performance in this and then was blacklisted a year later. Damned McCarthy!!! I have to admit, I never "got" Rex Harrison and this is the only film I ever liked him in. He always seemed so snide and supercilious and I couldn't believe he wasn't gay. Plus he destroyed so many lovely women. His ex,- Lilli Palmer ,wrote about him extensively in her wonderful autobiography ; " Change Lobsters and Dance", which is still one of my favorite show biz bios and he was loathsome. I love "Blythe Spirit" and think he's perfect in the role, because the character is again, just like him. A nasty piece of work.In "Mrs Muir", I'll grant you, again, it works and I could never understand how this lovely romantic film wasn't up for countless Oscars, Tierney especially. She was always underrated. Incidentally, Robert Osborne told me she was his favorite actress. At his memorial they showed eight clips of his favorite moments in movies. Most were from musicals, but one was Gene Tiereny decending the staircase for a waiiting Tyrone Power in " The Razor's Edge" with him saying ; " I've never seen you more beautiful. ' Indeed, Steve

      I agree on Herrmann, Steve. Though Herrmann broke in at RKO with Orson Welles, he really become a star composer when Alfred Newman snatched him up for Fox. Starting with "Jane Eyre" and then advancing up to "Anna and the King of Siam," "Hangover Square" and "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," his work for Newman was jaw-dropping excellent.

    A terrific old movie! See this and you'll ultimately forgive Rex Harrison for making "Doctor Doolittle."

    Ok but thats more a reaction than a review. Not a single actual in depth review with behind the scenes trivia and such to be found online for such a timeless masterpiece. I guess we’ll have to wait for Steven Spielberg to do a useless remake in order to revive interest in it.
