Your impression of Marilyn - both voice and facial expressions is hilarious and spot on🤣 Yes, both Robert Mitchum and Marilyn Monroe sizzle onscreen 😍🤩 They’re both mesmerizing amid the backdrop of gorgeous cinematography❣️ Interestingly, Robert Mitchum knew Marilyn as a teen bride when she was Norma Jean Baker, married to his pal Jim Dougherty.
Yes, his knowing her beforehand, made them great allies, protecting her from the monster antics of Preminger. I love this film. Love the color, love the scenery and basically love 20th Century Fox in the '50's.
Hello Steve, I have loved your TOQATM ever since I heard of it. I told everyone about your bottomless well of Hollywood knowledge and of course your cheeky voice impersonations of everyone from A to Z. Not to mention your inside/outside juicy gossipy tid bits. Love you love you love you. Been a fan for several years. Thank you. Tom P. in Minneapolis, MN. 7/29/19
What a wonderful gift in the middle of the summer! Thank you, Steve and Johnny! River of No Return is one of my favorite Monroe pictures, and her four songs are all fantastic! The 90 minutes pass by like 30.
Steve- I am shocked you didn't mention the ONE actor who really suffered under Preminger: Tom Tryon! He was so traumatized he left acting and became a bestselling writer! You MUST do "In Harm's Way" soon, please!
A great review, Steve,....as always! And great stories about the people in the movie. Beautiful portrait by Karsh of Marilyn behind you. A relative of mine saw that picture once in a magazine and said, "Such sadness in those eyes".
Just have to say, discovered you yesterday with Angela Lansbury's passing and lovin' every review I've been watching since. I'm a HUGE movie buff, so enjoying all of these. Crackin' this old queen up as well. Kudos from Canada!
I'm thrilled and delighted and I hope you subscribe, so I can visist you very month with another classic! Thanks so much for watching and God Bless, Dear Dame Angela. Also, my friends in Canada!!! Best; Steve
Fun fact: the film gave Marilyn Monroe her only Billboard chart entry, as (according to Joel Whitburn's "Pop Memories 1890-1954"), her smooth, breathy version of the title track hit #30 for one week in July, 1954.
Thanks. Mitchum and Marilyn were close friends. They used to double date back when her name was Norma Jeane. He says that Marilyn actually saved his life during filming. They were stuck in some dangerous place, and the rescue boat could only hold two people, the navigator and Marilyn. She started screaming that she wouldn't leave Mitchum behind. Miraculously, the three of them made it back safely. Cheers.
Thanks! I hope when I reach the "Pearly Gates", she feels the same and isn't waiting for me, like Bette Joan and Susan Hayward, with an ax. YIKES! Thanks so much! Steve
Just when I thought that your impressions couldn’t possibly get any better you do a fantastic and funny Marilyn Monroe ❣️ I wish you had a television show doing this ‼️
LOL! Oh Omar, once again you made my day! Thanks so much! I hope this finds you busy, well and staying SAFE! Happy Autumn and please keep watching! Best; Steve

I agree with Thomas Perez ! You said it perfectly.. ( 2020 thank you for Steve Hayes.). I found you recently and think your are literally the best thing in that has happened in 2020.
Robert Mitchum was born not too far from where I currently live in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In fact, when Ty Pennington had that home renovation TV show, they restored a house on Robert's former street... 👍 💋
Interesting. From what I can gather, Mitchum, in his youth, was a restless spirit and not too much for a homebody. He preferred riding the rails. Steve
The You Tube notification rang that you posted another review and like Pavolov's dog, I came running. I loved this movie. It was large and Marilyn was at her gorgeous best. Like Bus Stop, she shone brightly. More reviews, please
Dear Steve, The floods in New York look so terrifying that I'm worried about you, and thought the only way to check you're alright would be to see if you could respond to a comment. "River Of No Return" seemed appropriate (!) and I adore your impressions of Marilyn. Otto Preminger was such a monster it's a wonder she didn't fake a broken neck. But just look at her - oh, she's so lovely, so vulnerable. As someone else has said, this is how I remember her in "Bus Stop". She had the most incredible relationship with the camera, and I'm not sure that Natasha Lytess helped her, or even (if "My Week With Marilyn" is to be believed) Paula Strasberg later. I've seen an interview with Robert Mitchum in which he said (again, as somebody else has commented) that he'd first met her when she was Norma Jeane, but he never denigrated her. I believe that actors all have their own way of working and perhaps hers was to work with the camera rather than with the director. Meanwhile, Robert Mitchum was an extremely intelligent man and a magnetic actor, and seeing the two of them together is my reason for watching this film. Sarah Miles (who worked with Mitchum on two films) recently gave an interview in which she said he was the most intelligent and interesting man she'd ever met - when he was sober. (She also mentioned Warren Beatty, whom she'd met on a film set and who thereafter phoned her all over the world to talk dirty. She was scathing. I seem to recall that he used the same technique on Helena Bonham Carter after the release of "A Room With A View" and Helena, who hadn't even met him, was totally bewildered.) We haven't had floods here but last weekend was freezing (11 degrees C daytime and 9 degrees C at night); the block of flats where I live lost all heating and hot water, I had to shower and shampoo my hair in cold water and I became rather ill. It was my birthday on the 28th September and, living on hot drinks, I struggled to Marks & Spencer Food Hall, and was amazed to be greeted with a huge bouquet and birthday cards signed by all the staff. They did this last year, when I was 80, but I didn't expect it again this year and was so overwhelmed I nearly burst into tears. Aren't people nice - including you. Best wishes and hoping you're safe, Alida
HAPPY BRITHDAY, DEAR ALIDA!!! Good ole' Marks & Spencer! You can't beat that kindness! I'm, sorry that you had to battle having no hot water or heat! I hope you are feeling better. Here, as you know, we tackled the rain. Fortunately I had made it to the grocery store and had supplies, I love th sound of the rain, so I hunkered down and watched movies, all of which made me cry buckets. Happy tears though. "The Miracle Worker", " The Color Purple" and " I Know Where I'm Going". Today are Michael Powell's and Deborah Kerr's birthdays. So I'll probaly watch either The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" or "Black Narcissus" ( my favorite) tonight. I also watched "Young Bess" with Jean Simmons and Deboprah and nasty Kathleen Byron in her only Hollywood foray. She was riviting as always and I'm sorry she didn't adjust to Hollywood though they probably would have wasted her. Yes, Preminger was a pig. No question. But like so may, I loved many of his films. I like "River Of No Return" and Mitchum was always a getleman to his leading ladies. Laughton was onto him and said repeatedly over the years that he was a dedicated and brilliant actor. I also tgought he was the sexiest of the men of that period. That laconic " I don't give a damn" attitude works for me every time. Big Birthday Hugs to you, My Dear! Steve

Not only did Joe DiMaggio spend time in Canada with Marilyn on set, but Shelly Winters also showed up. She was Marilyn's old roomate and future Actor's Studio schoolmate. Marilyn looked incredible, sung beautifully. Two things Bette Davis, nor Elizabeth Taylor could do at the same time. So, who's the better actress, who's the greater beauty?
Who wants to compare. I luv 'em all! Marilyn gives such a touching performance here and when he goes back for her at the end, I swoon every time. Best Wishes and Thanks For Watching; Steve
Marilyn called this "... a Grade Z movie where the actors take 3rd place behind scenery and CinemaScope." The crudely lavish costumes for this and 'No Business Like Show Business' are why as the boss she dressed her Cherie in an off-the-rack costume and put sbags in its fishnet hose for the later Bus Stop.
Well, it was Fox in the '50's and everyone had to do their share of on location Cinemascore productions to try and lure the audience away from their televsions. She may have also felt this way because there was no love lost between her, Zanuck and Preminger. However, Iove it and wish she'd done more with Mitchum! Thanks for watching best Wishes; Steve
They 'taught' First-Nation Canadians to be movie Indians, e.g. ride stupidly in full view where they could be shot easily. MM made friends with children near Alberta filming sites; asked if she could ride one's bike; etc.
Well, we 've done ten years worth of episodes, which, if you string them together are add up to being just a bit longer than a DeMille epic! LOL! Thanks for watching!
Oh My Gosh! As Jimmy Cagney said in "Yankee Doodle Dandy"; " My Mother Thanks you, My Father thanks you , My Sister thanks you and I thank you!" So appreciated! Best Wishes; Steve
This is a very entertaining movie and Marilyn is fine although her performance would be more credible had they toned down her glossy make-up and made her hair honey blonde (platinum colouring was not possible in those days).Just a minor gripe.Thank you., Steve.
I love the Technicolor and the process shots in the studio against the backdrops on the river. I also wish she'd done another one with Mitchum. He was terrific opposite her and in the films he did with Jane Russell. They didn't dwarf him.
