The New Largest Ever Snake, Vasuki indicus
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Vasuki indicus is a new species of giant snake from the Eocene of India. Not directly related to modern snakes, it was massive, potentially larger than even Titanoboa. It also lived around the same time, as Titanoboa, but on the opposite of the world from South America, in India. Meaning that the Eocene globally was a major factor in allowing massive snakes to evolve.

Then that would mean that the Madtsoid snakes reclaim the throne of world’s largest snake, ever since Gigantophis was dethroned by Titanoboa.
@@indyreno2933It depends on the exact phylogenetic position of madtsoids. Currently they are basal to Serpentes, which you can argue makes them more of a stem-snakes. However it's still somewhat up to what you would define as a true snake, as snake is not a taxonomic rank but just a common word. You can say that it's synonymous a member of Serpentes but in reality I'm pretty sure that if any madtsoids were to make it to modern times they would have been treated like snakes by the naturalists as there would be no reason to draw a line between them and more derived ophidians. So if someone where to say that all ophidians are snakes I personaly wouldn't argue with them. I mean according to your logic machaidonts are not cats either because they are basal to the modern cat clade.
As a side note there's been some debate whether Percrocuta and Dinocrocuta should be in their own family or be placed as true hyaenids instead.
@@indyreno2933What About Hyenodont???????
@@indyreno2933 why does "snake" apply to serpentes only? Like where is the rule from?

IN HINDUISM, VASUKI IS SECOND IN SIZE TO SESHA ANANTHA, WHO IS THE BIGGEST OF ALL SNAKES & CELESTIAL BEING
Source: Vedas, Ramayana (Ithihasa), Mahabharatha (Ithihasa) & Gita (Updesha). These 4 texts supercede all others in Hinduism. So, I would wager there is still another biggest snake to find.
I mean, it's also possible that someone used Anantha as a scientific name already. Like the first azhdarchid initially getting called Titanopteryx, but having to relinquish the title because someone had assigned it to a fly first.
@@Eloraurora god I hope they do not use anantha o.o because there's always a bigger snake. Its like usin the symbol for infinity as the last number. But there is always a bigger number. o.o

Isn't it the mass of the animal that counts, not the length? for example, T.rex is considered the largest even though Spinosaurus was longer. Anacondas are heavier than pythons, and Titanoboa is more similar to anaconda, so it may still be the largest I guess?
It’s still the largest in my opinion
It seems that BIGGEST or LARGEST can be length, weight, height..
Yes. That would be correct. The issue with snakes is as I mentioned, they're very poorly preserved. We don't have great mass estimates for either, so length is the next best proxy.
I think it's a similar case of the reticulated python vs green anaconda here. Titanoboa might have been the heavier of the two therefore the larger one while vasuki might have been the longer one. Until we get evidence that vasuki was wider that titanoboa suggesting it was heavier I think titanoboa keeps it's title.
It's like talking about Siberian tiger vs Bengal tiger ...once u face them in real life u get a clearer idea ...it's not just size that counts ...or humans would be extinct long back ...
Vasuki in Bali known as massive snake dragon 🐉
Vasuki is actually lord of the snakes
In India mythology too
My grandpa once told me about back when they were kids there were huge snakes in the woods that looked like thick logs of tree, they were so huge that they had impaired mobility, India's forests were vastly unexplored in those days, he might just be talking about Vasuki indicus.
Rubbish
Vasuki Indicus lived millions of years ago
My grandmother saw a very large snake that circled the roof twice to exit their home, and it was in the same area where they found the fossil
Explain the story bro it's interesting
Shiva's own✨
So if the snake is a reptile then it grows all the time, my point being could these just be giant examples of smaller snakes?
Could be but it would have nothing to do with reptilian growth. They do grow their entire life but after the early rapid growth it slows way down. If these are unusually sized giants they have something else going on.
3:07 for the climbing snake and nightmares.
I’m a firm believer that we’ll never know their true max lengths. They possibly could’ve reached lengths that greatly surpass what paleontologists estimate/suggest. 🤯
Unless a very great specimen is found it's super unlikely, and even then it would be possible to have larger individuals, so not even their max size
Vasuki - The king of nagas is a mythological great snake in Indian culture .
What's your opinion on the Giant Congo Snake photograph taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1959?
Take rest titanoboa
Unless I am mistaken, both animals are known from a very small number of fossils. I think it’s a bit premature to declare one larger than the other. Imagine 50k years from now someone discovers fossils from an average sized reticulated python and then shortly after someone discovers fossils from a huge Burmese python. People might assume that the Burmese was the larger snake until someone found a huge retic. We don’t know which was bigger yet, we just know that this individual was bigger than that individual.
When a new larger snake is discovered, it will then be known as the largest snake but for now, Vasuki Indicus is the largest snake fossil found.
And regarding fossils, its the same with every fossil. They always find a small number.
I have a question. Was the vasuki just now discovered or was it discovered years ago?
If a bigger snake comes along, just call it Vasukier Indicus, Vasukierer Indicus, Vasukiererer Indicus...you get what I mean

@@captainwalker9536 kashyap was father of nagas. o.o But Anantha's story is pre vedic, a lot older than vasuki, it comes from proper Naga clan, before naga rishis developed the concepts in vedas like athman & param athman. I'm so curious about the factors that lead to such gigantism. Especially if the new species is not aquatic! I would have assumed that an aquatic lifestyle would help such animals support themselves... I blame the books I read as a kid that said Brontosaurus HAD to be aquatic because of it's size! 😅
Megafauna with few large predators could be a part of the reason. For Titanoboa it would have lived in an even wetter environment, so few mammals would have been able to be that large of predators in that ecosystem. For Vasuki, India as far as we know didn't have any predatory mammal groups which reached large sizes until after it made contact with Asia, so there was ecospace to exploit there.
My guess is it was a case of Insular gigantism. With India being on its own, it likely allowed for Vasuki to get so large.

@@mmn7209 do you know king cobras are Ophiophagus, meaning 90% of what they eat are other snakes. This is why in the stories of Anantha & Garuda, though both are from Naga, are cousins & can work with one another. o.o Something that later puranas like Shaivapurana & Shaktipurana miss, as they are lesser newer puranas.
The Titanoboa had larger vertebrae than the Vasuki Indicus. This indicates that the Titanoboa weighed slightly more than the Vasuki Indicus. The Vasuki Indicus is closely related to a Python, while the Titanoboa is related to an Anaconda. To put this in perspective, the Reticulated Python and the Green Anaconda are the largest serpents of their kind. When speculating the winner, although the Reticulated Python is much longer than the Green Anaconda, the Anaconda is much wider and has thicker skin. The Anaconda is also much faster, moving at 5 mph compared to the Reticulated Python's 1 mph on land. Both are constrictors. Ultimately, the winner is the Titanoboa due to its thicker skin and greater weight. This was a close comparison, and the outcome might be different with snakes of different lengths. Hope this helped ❤
