What is the end play on the steering shaft for the bearing loading For when you install the shims they vary in thickness and the preload is an integral part of getting the box to adjust with smooth transition from left to right once the sector shaft is installed, I have had a problem with getting a consistent feel after adjusting from l to r operation. All parts have been sourced from you and the only original part is the steering box itself. clarification on how much play from each step of the rebuild will help many who may encounter this problem. Thanks

I am restoring a cj5 steering box. End play must be "0" in my opinion, the preload of the ball bearing is the most important part of the process. I cut shims from an aluminum soda can, they are thin and I get the preload that I wanted, no totally free, just a little effort to turn the steering box. In my case I fixed the steering column to my mechanic press . I hope this "one year later" answer help you.

Great video. Question: is there no need to grease the worm wheel or the ball barings?

How many steel balls use the cj5 steering box, upper and down side? Can I use 80W-140 for the steering box?

Is this assembly different for the CJ5 boxes?

To get sector in correct spot make sure the steering wheel is left to right centered when the sector rides on it in relation to the turning of the front wheels.

How tight should the sector shaft be in the bushings

    • @thra5herxb12s

It needs to be free enough to rotate but not move side to side which is one of the causes of steering wheel play. If it's too tight the wheels wont centralise properly.

@Andre- I would always used heavy duty axle grease on the balls while installing.
