No wonder people love Hamilton! This thing is simply gorgeous because it is gorgeously simple, and has a fantastic contemporary cinema story to go along with it. Could do with some more AR, better lume, and a few hundred dollars off though. Cheers! Jody
The Murph is that perfect blend of understated elegance and "I'm such a fan boy nerd that I wear movie props, but you wouldn't know it unless you, too, are such a nerd"
Than go for the 42 mm. This one misses the Morse Code on the seconds hand 😢
@@haping1 Honestly, even if I could read Morse Code, my eyesight wouldn't be keen enough to notice its absence.
Girl… same.
I actually ignored stuff talking about the Murph because it was a movie watch, and I didn't care. Then I saw a picture of the Murph, fell in love with it, and THEN found out it was the watch I had been ignoring! Definitely want one of the 38mm versions in my collection.
Too expensive, but the brand has a lot of fans who are willing to pay the premium
What we need now is a comparison between the 38mm murph and the seiko alpinist. That would be a killer video
I'd personally take the Alpinist all day every day over either Murph or any Khaki. Especially with the green face.
@tivobelievo7390 same here, in fact thats exactly what i did 😂
@@tivobelievo Hamilton Murph movement is simply much superior & much more accurate than Alpinist movement... In fact, quality, durability & accuracy of Hamilton H-10/50 movements are not much different than any Rolex or Tudor or Grand Seiko movements. Most H-10 movements are within +-1s/day tolerance limits... Surprising but true...
I would say that no they are not .
I have 2 ETA 2824 Glycine watches and both have been repaired in the 3 years I have owned them , the winding is rubbish and the crown fell out of both .
I have the Baby Alpinist in green with the Seiko 6R35, and my Sumo with the same , and my 63MAS with 6R15 and these have not missed a beat in the 4 odd years of ownership .
No , the ETA2824 has major issues with the winding mechanisim ,
ps. I also have 2x Selleta200 watches and zero issues as well . @@Sumerdini
Or Murph and Khaki Field. Same case?
Fun fact: Christopher Nolan, director of Interstellar, actually wears this watch himself. In recent press tours for Oppenheimer, you can repeatedly spot it on his wrist in all kinds of different interviews. Pretty neat that the man walks around wearing Easter eggs for his own films, lol.
I noticed that too!
Might have something to do with fact that he's a paid brand ambassador.
@@stevemoon2136 mmmm, maybe. But he clearly doesn't always wear Hamilton (see BAFTAs), and typically actors get those ambassador deals, not directors. In any event, it's a watch he had made for his own movie, not an off-the-shelf stock piece. Sponsored or no, still a cool Easter egg.
The Hamilton H10 movement IS a Powermatic 80 movement (c07.611). It does indeed not have a synthetic pallet fork, but many Powermatic 80 movements don't have it either. The only ones with a synthetic escapement start with C07.1xxx.
I think only Tissot refers to movements as Powermatic 80 though when they have the plastic escapement with 23 jewels
@@Andrew.W75 Certina does this too.
@@automaticninjaassaultcat3703 It is serviceable. Some youtubers are spreading the rumour that it would not be serviceable but that is the greatest BS.
I have a 6.5 inch wrist and I’ve never been scared of 42
I’m even wearing one right now!!
But the 52mm lug to lug is just insane
They're what you call "sweeping lugs" 😂
Last time i was this early the casing stones were still on the pyramid 😂
Ha! I'll give you 6.55841 points just for that comment mate!
Have I had a stroke? I could have sworn we already had a Murph 38.
I had the same thought!
I think Jody has confused a lot of folks saying it's new. It's newer but definitely more than 1 year old.
@@dsant2811many youtubers have published videos about this watch in the last week. Weird because as you said it is not new. A campaign by Hamilton to reduce stock before releasing a new one?
I clicked on this video thinking that something else changed. Thanks guys.
@@Momo_8ksame, I thought they decided to add Eureka on the seconds hand like the 42. 🤷🏻♂️🙃
love the look, hate the price. (maybe used in a year or two)
I have the original Cooper and with a 7.5" wrist I love the way a 42mm sizes to me.
Got this and wear it almost every day... I plan to give it to my daughter before she goes to University... fortunately that's still a few years to go yet
I’d go the 42mm. I have 7.5inch wrist, but more so, eye sight without glasses makes smaller watches difficult to see.
👍
I like the original 42mm as it is closer to the on-screen edition. Of course, there is nothing wrong with the 38mm if that is your choice.
That is a dandy wee fellow. I'm afraid though that I'll have to wait for an Ali Express version to fit my even more wee budget. Thanks for another great review Jodi!
There is. Look at escapement time and steeldive
No morse code second hand??? Outrageous!
Cheapout….. :(
It is so weird my murph that i got in ecember has coded hand !
@@subhranildey3202Which size?
@@subhranildey3202then you got the 40mm size 🤣
@@soyman539242
My preference is 42mm. I also don't care for the Powermatic 80. I like a very smooth sweep.
Recently bought the 38mm - agree, Jody, absolute little stunner. I’ve a BB58, which feels considerably bigger than this, though on paper only a millimetre bigger. But for me, the size suits the watch. I’ve genuinely enjoyed having a smaller, lighter watch on the wrist. Only problem is I really must stop driving through corn fields with Zimmer’s (dear God what an incredible) score blasting out. Local farmers really are fed up with me now, though they do always remark on how nicely proportioned my wrist watch is. 😄
My wife got me the 42mm Murph for my 41st b-day. I love it like nothing else i own because of the thought and our personal connection to the film. I wouldn't get anything with a longer lug to lug though, I have a 7" wrist and with anything larger, the lugs would begin to look to long.
Plus, my version has "eureka" on the second hand :)
It's a really nice touch for fans of the film. The limited packaging is pretty cool as well. I bought mine thinking they were all sold already. Nice surprise finding one still available.
I would prefer the 38mm.
Hey Jody,
I’m wearing my recently received Erebus Origin, black color way. You all did a great job with your first watch! No watch is perfect. However, this one is super close. Good job👍🏻😊
I bought the 38mm Murph at Duty Free in Milan airport in May ‘23 for my son’s 21st birthday as he’s a huge Interstellar fan. He was over the moon with his first mechanical watch and wears it everyday. It cost £680 ($840 USD) which was a good price for what was then a new release. Plus I got a free Hamilton backpack!
The Murph is my fave watch. It could seriously be a one watch collection with an Uncle Seiko bracelet, tropic rubber strap, and the factory strap.
Mind linking the bracelet you got? I am curious.
Worth every penny, honestly. The design, fit and finishing are exceptional!
Great content again Jody!!🎉
Thanks mate!!
Just received my Origin yesterday and am absolutely in love, the updated curved bracelet has phenomenal articulation too! Beautiful job fellas!
A smart marketing ploy to please 38mm fans and significantly increase the retail price compared to similar Hamilton Fields. Surely it's a 'Murph' lookalike as it's the wrong size and the Morse code is absent on the seconds hand, which misses the point of the movie character's association? Still, it's a nice watch but at a hefty premium IMO.
Metal bracelets for this watch are available with Strapcode too, I think - which ups the versatility. Hamilton make great watches.
Okay, you did it (with help from Hamilton), finally a Hamilton field watch I can get behind. Until you gave the RRP...egads! Better lume and AR coating would tempt me to get a grey market or used one if I were looking for a field watch. She is a beauty.
A bit of tan going on there Jody. Cold and slightly damp here in the Scottish Borders. A 40 mm would be ideal. The price is fine for a decent watch.
for me personally 38mm is too small 40mm would be perfect😁
I think the 42mm suits your wrist better than the 38mm, and not to mention the morse code printed on the 42mm version, as a plus point. Cheers!
Much preferred the original size. Hope they continue to supply it...
I enjoy wearing this 38mm Murph perfect for my small wrist, which is a must .Yeah, the price is in issue, but when you see the movie, you can forget the price, really, is the good... thanks again for reviewing this incredible piece. It's 2 years for me.. It looks good on you, my friend jody... from St George Utah... sincerely, I'm a fan of the channel....
Since the watch came out here in France like 2 years ago, we can find very good deal, great watch, outregeous price, good job jody, Frédéric from Paris France.
I thought it was something new when I saw the thumbnail! I tried this on over a year ago. I also tried the 42 which was too big (I have an 8 inch wrist) I've also seen people with 7.5 inch wrist and smaller wearing the 42 and they just look rediculous 😂
I wasn't impressed with either so bought a Jazzmaster instead and then picked up the Cooper a couple of months later. Both better pieces than the Murph.
Jody, thanks for a great review and compo' of the Hamilton Murph's, very tempted to snag one, when I can at a 'reasonable price'. BUT, I have on several different occasions nearly bought a Hamilton, but for some reason I've never actually 'pulled the trigger' on one!
They, Hamilton seem to kind of sit in that middle ground where you spend a bit more and get something noticeably better or spend a bit less and get something very nearly almost as good or even equal, but without 'that' name?
I freely admit to having both mechanical and quartz movements and I don't really discriminate between them, if I like it then that's it for me.
I hope/think you can probably can get that view point?!
Same here😅
I admit I was one of the folks who "bullied" Hamilton into releasing a 38 mm version. It started out in 2019 when the original 42 mm came out. I continued "harrassing" Hamilton on social media, but not to the point of being totally obnoxious and annoying.
I kinda gave up in early 2022 and told myself it wasn't happening, so I ended up buying a 38 mm homage from Alixpress that has a Miyota 8 series movement and a screw down crown! That watch originally came with a multi BOR-type bracelet and I replaced it with a black leather strap similar to what the Murph has, and I loved wearing that thing.
Fast forward a few months later and the official Hamilton account responded to me with a #somethingsmalliscoming and I got excited that it was finally happening. I love the movie and the watch so much that I ended up getting 2 copies. I still wear it to this day and it's one of my favorite watches to wear.
I have an 8 1/4 inch wrist and anything below 39 just looks crazy small on me. I’d stick with the 42.
not related to this review but my Origin arrived today and i laughed when I saw how many stickers and wrappers it was wrapped in because it immediately reminded me of your unboxings 😂
I bought the 42 on release. Even got the Interstellar tesseract collectors box 😅 I love the watch. Really happy that Hamilton made a reduced version for those who were disappointed with the initial sizing. No morse code on the second hand of this one however. Not a deal breaker I'm sure 😂
Great watch, definitely a perfect size and functionality 👍🏽Thanks Jody 🙏🏽
I don't mind the lacking AR coating. No AR coating is really needed on such a nostalgic watch. I would be willing to consider it an aesthestic plus, allowing the crystal to catch the light. The weak lume on the other hand is just an outright mistake on a watch in that price range, in my opinion.
What does Hamilton have against screw down crowns!??
That's what I would've fixed too!
Massively regret selling this one recently. I might need to pick another one up 🤦♂️ - although prefer 4hz and more AR coating.
I did the same thing. I sold it and I picked one up again.. now it is on the way shipped to me
i bought this uk with 10/15% off from ernest jones, think i ended up paying £700, but 100% worth it, the power reserve is excellent, the finish is great and it keeps time so well. dont hesitate
42mm for me… but I wear a full size Lunar Pilot no problem
I bought the 38mm and managed to find an aftermarket bracelet made specifically for this model…. Looks amazing now 👌
Only just watched the movie last night. I hope the watch is a bit more rugged than the one that Murph threw across the bedroom and promptly broke! 🙂
I have the Hamilton Khaki Pilot from the same movie and I love it... first proper watch in my collection.
To each their own, but for e the 42 hands down.
"New"?? maybe you just discovered this Jodie, but it was launched in December, 2022. Hardly what anyone would call a "new" release.
I'll wait for the Baltany version.
I own the 38 Murph and changed the strap to bracelet. It gets more wrist time than my black bay 58. One of my best watches right here!
I enjoy my Hamilton Cooper watch
Hamilton never should have discontinued that one. It's sweet.
I really wanted to buy the 42mm with Eureka but after trying both, 38mm is by far the prettier for a 16-17cm (~6.5 inch)wrist.
It's a killer look on any elegant male wrist or makes any male wrist look elegant..Both is correct.
you wearing a Star Wars shirt made me think, what if Christopher Nolan did a Star Wars movie, how epic would that be?
I'll stick with the Newmark 52 field with ivory dial on tan leather.
Jody! Love the Murph and appreciate the review. My only note is actually about your new set. I'm noticing a bit of echo and/or hollowness in the recording, like you might experience while filming in the bathroom (not that I'm accusing you of anything nefarious). You may want to look into some audio tiles, perhaps color matched to go with your new blue filming room. All the best!
The 42 looked pretty good on your wrist.. “Eureka” sold me on my 7.25 inch wrist being such a fan of the movie. Can’t go wrong with either
i have the Coop and i love it. worn more than any other of my watches. i will be having this murph.
Very nice! My collection has become very diver-heavy and I was looking at adding a nice field watch to it (which I also intend to wear as a daily banger!), but not sure if I'd want to go above $500... I'll definitely put this one on the shortlist.
My escapement time costed me 60€ and it’s lovely
I didn't realize Australia had it's own currency 😮
Yep we’ve even got our own govt too
What did you think they used?
Unforgivable that they didn't do the morse code on the seconds hand
I’ve had mine a few months now, can’t take it off, replaced the thick black leather strap after a few months because it made it look a little too dressy. Went with an Olive Green Nylon strap that makes the dial pop even more. Ya not cheap but a bargain compared to a Tudor Ranger @ 4 times the price. 🙏
@jody this watch came our in Oct/Nov 2022, when i saw this video title i thought there is another newer improved 38 version that came out now. You are 15 months late to the party. Still an amazing watch hopefully it will come down in price now.
Was lucky enough to get a 1/3 off from a UK official dealer 12 months ago and its still a regular on my wrist. The size and dial are so so sweet. Certainly one of my favourite watches for casual wear. Now have both Interstellar watches, one as a dazzler, the other as the practical. Great pairing
Thanks for the video Jodie. It's nice that they are responding to fan requests - although I must admit, I don't understand the fuss. I'd rather have an Oris Big Crown.
I'm amused how Swatch claim that their sub-brands are 'independent' and, at the same time, that movements from the wider conglomerate count as 'in-house'.
Hasn't this been out for a while?
One night a few years ago I searched UA-cam for clips of Intersteller to watch. On a whim I clicked on TGV's "The Interstellar Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date - The Best Automatic Aviation Watch Under $600?" and I was hooked on the Murph watch when it was shown in the video, and on watches in general. I had to wait years for the 38mm since that's the size that fits better.
It would be the 38mm for me. Nice looking handset and dial which could easily accommodate a date at 6 without compromising the aesthetics which would turn it from an occasional wear to a daily, the strap would have to go. For me it's a good looking expensive watch that would hardly ever get used.
NICE watch 🤩 and thank you for all the videos!
OF COURSE, sensible people, like Ozzies, Brits, Krauts (that's me), and many others will go for the 38mm version, but the insane "Americans" over here will scream about this model being some sort of "woke" "unisex" model, and even the women will chime along, and these donut-warriors will threaten Hamilton with their special Rambo-edition rifles to make a "REAL MAN" version in FIFTY-two millimetres! Oh dear, I wish I'd never come here...
BTW: I certainly love my 36mm Tandorio homage of the mid 70s British military issue tonneau W10 by Hamilton on a khaki nylon-strap, and it is a beauty and sooooo easy to read!
They are lacking a 40mm version which would be the sweet spot in my opionion. 42mm with that extended lug width might be too big for a lot of wrists, but 38mm is unfortunately also on the smaller side and definately too small for my wrist.
I have murph 38, and it's my favorite watch in my collection. It's perfect for my 6.75 in h wrist.
Lighting in the new room, giving Mr Jody shiny face? $1,500? yeah nah
This is very nice, however given the rrp I’d be tempted to stretch to the Oris big crown pointer date. Sucker for cathedral hands 🙌
I'm a fan of the 42mm. Hopefully Hamilton will also release the Dune part2 movie watch. Cheers.
I had the check it out. Darth Vader meets Elvis' Ventura. Futuristico . Also, can't wait for the movie.
It sucks big time unfortunately
Ditch the strap for a plain leather one , and its perfect .
Jody, I’m wearing one of your Erebus Origins, orange dial. I can’t stop playing with the bezel. It’s so nice!!😊😊😅
This watch seems especially good with an Uncle bracelet being an option. I'm tempted!
It's so very unfortunate that the lume isn't great. If it were, I would be tempted to sell my Sinn 556i for this (the lume is my main complaint with that watch too!).
I mean… if you go to a pitch black dark are for whatever reason, check the time on your phone
I absolutely love this watch and definitely planning on picking one up at some point now that it’s that little bit smaller. I completely agree with what’s said here, making it a manual wind would have been a great idea, I just think it would have suited the watch style.
Bought the Coop on a leather strap......now I should save to get the Murph for my daughter!
I wouldn’t call the printing/lume color faux-tina lume. To me it’s just tan/khaki printing with matching tan Luke. If it was meant to actually be faux-tina then the minute track and logo printing would be in white with only the lumed hands and hour markers in tan.
Thanks Jodi! Hamilton if you're listening....how about a Murph in 36mm and with a slimmer crown? That would be awesome!
pretty sure the 38mm Murph and Khaki Field use the same case, but then what would be the point of a comparison. So agreed “no”.
I have my 38mm on an Uncle straps steel bracelet and I love it. It’s become my daily.
The stitching isnt matching the color of the lume on purpose. It was pure white that has been stained by the natural hand cheese from Mr P
I have 38mm khaki auto and want 40mm khaki auto with compact lugs and without date (or placed better than 42mm one). My wrist size is 19cm by the way, 7.5 inches.
What a great looking watch. My only quirk is it's size. I have a 7in. wrist and own a 38in. watch that like very much and wear it often. But for some reason, it looks tiny on my wrist. I wear it to work, cause it's a beater but switch when I get home. I know small watches are coming back, just wish that Hamilton would do a 40mm, 39 at the least. So much for wishful thinking. Nice review.
I loved my Khaki King but sold it for the complete lack of AR on the glass. Compared to even inexpensive watches I have, their crystals have very little to no AR.
it is nice but i cant see why i would choose this over the 38mm khaki field auto on a steel bracelet which i just ordered for 650 euros, especially for the price, the only think i like more about the murph is the no date
I've really liked the look of this watch for a long time, but I just wish it had a date complication, which is really the only extra feature I need in a watch. I'd hate to still have to look at my phone to know the date, especially for the price of a watch like this.
The 42 mm case would have been fine with more appropriate lugs.
Looking at the lug-to-lug in proportion to the diameter:
44 / 38 = 1.158
52 / 42 = 1.238
If the larger case had lugs in the same proportion as those on the smaller case, it would have been about 48.6 km lug-to-lug.
48.6 / 42 ≈ 44 / 38
This would have made the larger case much more reasonable for many more people.
However, the price is a different problem.....
I've decided 38-39 is the sweet spot on my 6 and a half inch wrist. Not paying almost a grand for a Hamilton three hander though. Especially not on a strap. Total non starter without a bracelet option.
damn, they really are rolling out videos for the murph 38mm on youtube right now by different youtubers but it's just pure coincidence lol
exactly my thoughts. Expensive, by no means new, with many shortcomings....and suddenly everyone loves it
"Love that watch! Yeah, sure Id like to buy. . . It's how much? Huh. . . Do you have any Tissots?"
Jody - I just got my Erbus in blue (Chicago) - ❤ it!!!!
Thanks mate! Glad you like it!
42mm camp here. I have an 8 inch wrist with no knuckle so I wear my watches below my “no knuckle”. This causes 3 o’clock crowns to dig into the back of my hand. I will no longer buy 3 o’clock crowns, 4 o’clock please.
Great watch, but by no means small! Personally, I'd like this even smaller and i'm a big guy who regularly, happily wears many 42mm+ watches.
Hi Jody, super video and great 'Murph' smaller version.
Does the 38mm gave the morse code now on the second hand (as the 42mm does?) Cheers
No mate, they deleted it. Some will be happy because it's more authentic, others will be unhappy because they will miss the little nerdy touch. Cheers!
Thanks for your kind reply Jody - Shame, think they should have put it on the 38mm second hand too, just for us watch nerds 😁😁😉😉😂😂🤣🤣
I'll head for the AliExpress version
