The story synopsis is written like Death’s recounting of the events leading up to PFD but he just forgot to remove all the editor notes where he complains about chess nerds and his well used scythes.
I like to think Death is just rambling to a dude.
I think after the events of the Infinity War, Death needed a diversion to distract himself from all the souls JUST erased by Thanos... And cut the guy some slack, he's grown irate over Cybertron's antics.@@blvalverde

I mean this with very little irony, these devs misread their strengths. They’d have done a fucking great Pratchett-esque GN or Comic, I actually think that writing was genuinely funny. It’s just a shame it falls off in the gameplay department.

I honestly love the really stupid premise that the game has, its like if death from discworld rented eternal champions one day and was "hell yeah i gotta get ino n that shit" and started a tournament, and really the goofy-ass endings are very much an extension to that. Hell, if it weren't for the tone this game could straight up be considered a parody instead

IIRC Lightshock rendered all the graphics in 640x480 resolution, but it was too heavy to run on 90s PCs so they had to cut it to 320x200. That's why the graphics are so pixelated. It's a shame because some of the backgrounds were really impressive for the time but in the final version they are just a confusing mess.

Fun fact: although Pray For Death was ignominiously crapped onto the Steam storefront in 2017, it's had all of 4 user reviews written for it. Assuming the general guess-timate that 1 in 60 purchasers will write a review, that means Pray for Death sold all of...240 (give or take) copies in 7 years.

1 in 60 is really high: the typical online review rate for a product is like 3% of purchases. they probably sold about 100 - 150 copies lmao, it's even worse.

I loved the "didn't deserve a second chance" bit popping up Shou Tucker. The only character in FMA that canonically went to Hell.
(In the manga, at the end of each volume, there'd be a little "In Memoriam" bit with the characters who died being shown rising to Heaven. Shou Tucker was the ONLY one shown being dragged down into Hell instead.)
With a new Kinnikuman anime coming out this year, Kinnikuman Dirty Challenger on the SNES would be something to look into.

Holy crap, you weren't kidding about that story! Big bang of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books off of that. It really does make me yearn for the days when people wrote some truly epic shit in instruction manuals that was occasionally far better than the actual game.
That plot makes it seem like the guys from GWAR are the main cast.

Here I was thinking I was one of, like, 4 people who knew about KHInsider. I can't tell if that's a DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP cut or if everyone's known about it and I just wasn't aware.
I'm going to guess most people who are interested in obscure VG OSTs have stumbled onto it at some point. It's just that VG music nerds are fairly rare.
Or those of us who like VG music while also being KH fans. Knew it for its forums first and realized they somehow hosted every ost as a side hustle.
I just hope it never gets taken down, it's a gods send whenever I want an ost (especially with all the nintendo takedowns and lack of official alternative methods of acquisition)
It seems like a lot of people stumbled onto it after no longer being able to reach that one site that used to sell official video game soundtrack CDs. There was also another site where downloads of individual tracks could be done, and the majority of it was fan arrangements, much of it in MIDI format (possibly for use as ringtones); Gerudo Valley theme had like 85 remixes and 3 that sounded like the actual in game track.
I'm suprised that Matt McMuscles even mentioned it, but the website is really good for game OSTs though. On the theme of bad fighting games, I did upload Battle of the Eras, Expect No Mercy, and Timeslaughter (including the rare CD Music OST) music on the website.
This game gets points in my book just for having a character named Pantera.

Excellent episode, Matt!!! Remember VR Troopers? It has a fighting game! Its not going to top the worst fighting games, but its pretty bad. It has good animation, and the depictions of the characters look okay, however; its difficulty is punishing, the roster is disappointing, it feels clunky to play, the mechanics play against the player, and its just overall terrible to play, imo.
Will check that out!
On the subject of Saban's output, there's Power Rangers on the Game Gear, a fighter not a brawler, presumably to keep the sprite count down. Probably the best fighter on the handheld, that's not a high bar I know.

@@neoqwertyIt's not going to win any awards, but they made it work. Story mode has you pick a Ranger, fight some putties one at a time, fight Goldar, then the monster, then the monster gets tall and you fight it as a Zord. It's all based off season one as best I can tell. There's dashes but you can't cancel out of them, and some simple specials with a hadoken motion.

Shou Tucker don't deserve no second chance
I could be wrong cos it's been a while since I read it, but Horace the cat might be a reference to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books. At some point they find the man responsible for running the universe, and as such has power over everything including life and death, but he just doesn't care. If I remember rightly, he had a cat named Horace, and lived in a kind of pocket dimension.
I can't remember the cat's name, but I love that you brought up the Man Who Rules the Galaxy. My favorite character in fiction and my GF a favorite moment in Hitchiker's.
Here he is, the ultimate power in the galaxy. Zaphod cauterized his own brain in pursuit of him, that's how high the stakes are in this quest. He's part of a group of people seeking to correct the countless wrongs on the galaxy.
And it's absolutely pointless. The pursuit of power was pointless, so Zaphod says screw it and leaves his co-conspirator stranded in the rain.

Every time I watch a The Worst Fighting Game videos, I keep wondering if Def Jam Icons should be included? I remembering buying that game for the xbox 360 and so disappointed with it and could not figure out the controls, nor know how much health my character had in the fight.
I was half expecting Mort to turn up in that instruction manual.
15:38 if you think a pause when jump attack and neutral block fighting game is the worst thing to happen, now imagine that same pause when a character gets hit , that's dead dance on snes, every attack stop the game for 1-2 seconds to confirm the hit.

Got to admit… I love the backstory to this. It’s delightfully tongue-in-cheek and self-aware, and it’s an absolute shame that nothing in this game even comes close to living up to the comedic potential contained therein.

I'd still love to see your take on Tongue of the Fatman on the C64. Because while it's bad, it's also one of those fighters that predates Street Fighter 2, so they didn't really have a template yet.

just as a bit of extra lore - the guys whose names you struggled to pronounce sounded Italian - Dylan Dog is a comic book that was written by Italians, and coincidentally also the reason I know of the "Death plays chess" story - one of the episodes included a person in a coma, and everyone who was close to him inexplicably dying, because he was playing a game of chess with Death. If he wins, he lives. But, every major piece he loses, a person that was close to him dies

Yay! You did my two preferred candidates back to back! Was obsessed with this game as a kid but it did feel so bad to play and as a pc player at the time I hadn't known KI at all. Some of the characters look kinda cool but Maelstrom is hella goofy. I find it hilarious how these clones all had a similar story with best warriors across time fighting for freedom etc. Also that War Gods would use Anubis as well.
M. Bison would have been more accepted, if he provided snacks during the Street Fighter tournament.

If you want another bad fighter with a genuinely weird roster and backstory, you really should check out an old pre-SF2 fighter called Tongue Of The Fatman (aka Mondu's Fight Palace) in one of its various incarnations.

I can't help but be amused by the fact "Dracula" was one of the contestants that didn't respond to Death's tournament invitation, despite the fact the backstory for one of the fighters (Maelstrom) is the broad-strokes history of the real-life Dracula. Am I to assume that this is a world where Stoker's famous vampire and the man who inspired him existed in the same continuity?

Anybody else have the phrase "combo breaker!" repeating in their heads? In high school I worked at Sears slinging treadmills and Bowflexes to middle aged suburbanites. Right outside was an arcade and I had to hear that hundreds of time a shift.
The endings make it sound like they took a break from KI to play Twisted Metal for a bit.
