    This reminds me of childhood, when I was still able to be enthralled with the world around me. Quiet, except for the sound of toys. The smell of fresh cut grass and wild onion in the air. A good breeze to keep my kite aloft. Sunshine that didn't blind or burn. All of that came flooding back to me upon listening to this. Things I haven't thought of in decades.

    this reminds me of how much everything is rhythm. everything oscillates in endless sequences.
    play a beat fast enough and you'll end up with a tone. play multiple tones and you'll end up with a harmony of underlying rhythms.
    this visualization is amazing at showing the organic nature of polyrhythms and the patterns they can create!

    I think there are always 3 sets of 18 tones. When there is only 1 spiral arm at 21:38, they sound in threes. I think this is the diatonic mode closest to pentatonic minor. At 2:07:57, we get the descending arpeggio from 1 to 18 on one arm of the spiral, and at 2:08:10, the pattern of the spiral best approximates an equilateral triangle.
    Though the Quadrivium is always an approximation, the sense of harmony and order between eye and ear in this beautiful algorithm is a welcome break from the chaos. Thanks Mirko.

      You could also just count the number of concentric circles, which is 18, each layer being a different tone and then count the number of small circles revolving within each one.
      So yes, you are absolutely correct about the number and amount of tones.
      Also, this isn't in 440hz tuning is it? Because when other music has played in the background for me, it all sounds flat and sour.

    • @candiisauce
      @candiisauce Рік тому +25

      @@youraftermyrobotbeethe minor key of chords often sounds very beautiful and pleasing to the brain, it could also be the fact that not all of the notes are playing at once, but are still being held for long enough for it to be a chord

    • @Diogordoful
      @Diogordoful Рік тому +15

       @candiisauce absolutely right! @youraftermyrobotbee I'm not good with theory, but I will do my best to raise points here about the foundation, so you guys can correct me:
      (also, in this video, I don't think they are using equal temperament or, MAYBE it is on 455.5hz, not 440hz, which can cause the thing to sound out of tune with 440hz instruments, like we tune guitar and piano, but since the notes are harmonizing with each other, they sound amazing because of the relationship and proportion that our brains hear)
      2:59 minor chords (ionian mode) tend to sound misterious, dark, and sometimes soothing, melancholic . Also, the bass from previus chord is still ringing, so it makes foundation for the E minor 7 chord, but the 7th is played one octave above, we all love 7th chords, even when we don't know the name, the 7th adds just the right amount of tension, making it "dubius and delicious". hahaha but it is not only 4 notes, that make this em7 as usual, it has all the matching intervals in between, making the chord sound fat and adding extensions to it, sounding very powerful and it is not played exatcly at the same time, souding like an arpeggio, which is very satisfying to hear also
      16:43
      As crazy as it seems, is an Cmajor7(9), but the 9th is played 1 octave above
      for reference:
      remember, it will sound of tune, either will have to correct the pitch of the reference or this video in cents to match the tuning, in 15.5 cents (455.5hz)
      you can also pitch down this audio to 425hz which sounds fenomenal with concert tuning instruments (440hz)

    This is great. The choice to start with an offset so that they don't all hit at once when they line up was a brilliant idea and gave these wonderful "strums" up and down the notes. The note choice was also very good. I'm going to take this as inspiration and try to code it up myself as an exercise. Thanks!

    • @pocketsk3824
      @pocketsk3824 Рік тому

      @@jesskrikra I was actually able to get it done pretty quickly. The trickiest part was getting the rotation rates of each circle right. At first, I tried equal linear velocities (rotational velocity based on linear distance from the center), which gave me very rhythmic results, which I actually liked a lot. But then I messed around and found out the right formula for the velocities here and, quite luckily, got it exactly right.
      I won't give all the code, but I will give the formula for the how I increment each circle's angle. Here, 'da' is the increment, and 'rotspeed' is something you can adjust to have the whole thing rotate faster or slower:
      for (int i = 0; i < rings*3; i++){
      da = (1-i*pow(2,-7))*rotspeed/60;
      circles[i].angle+=da;
      }
      The '/60' could be included in rotspeed but I left that because that's the framerate I'm computing at. It's 'rings*3' because each ring has 3 circles and they each rotate at a different rate so they eventually catch up with and pass the other circles on their ring. Hope this helps.

      @@jesskrikra the calculations are not that hard, there are basically 18 notes, they seem to spaced evenly across the circle you you can calculate the circumference.

    Watching the geometric shapes dance to the rhythm of polyrythms is like beholding the unseen choreography of the cosmos. Each beat strikes a chord in the grand design, each intersection a harmonic convergence of mathmatical precision and musical expression. Here, in this experimental soundscape, we witness the quantum ballet of existence, where every note is a geometric entity, every rhythm a mathmatical equation in the auditory canvas. Truly, this video is a journey into the harmonic core of the universe, where geometry and rhythm weave the melody of reality.

I'm really enthusiastic about the way this appears to be a pseudo-chaotic system, but it's obviously got an order to it when listening and yet the pattern appears to be weaving in and out of chaos and order. Very fun, set this to Loop and leave on for a pleasant room ambient sound. But it's not as fun without the visual pairing, so be sure to always play this with a video screen and not audio-only

    Please make one for people to use it would be so unique. I find this philosophically and musically very satisfying. It would be really unique to be able to meaningfully think about music in a totally diffident way, seeing music this way really fits my philosophy and dare I say it actually help change the way we see music from a metaphysical point of view

    It would be amazing if you could do one as the position of the planets in our solar system with the centre being the Sun and each planets tone being the frequency that it is said to resonate at. It would be a beautiful visual and auditory experience and teaching for people on how this divine clockwork moves our very existence

      There used to be a website called solarbeat, I think, by an artist called white vinyl, who made this very thing. It was just like this, but with the planets, rotating around the center in proportion to their rates of rotating around the sun ☀️🪐🌍☄️

    For some reason as I stared at the spinning vortex. I found a tear on my cheek. Not sure what that was about . I guess it was sadness leaving my body without my input. Made me realize that the simplicity of motion and sound are truly a inner core reach into our imagination.

    One of the things I really like about this one is that there aren't moments where every note hits the line at the exact same time. There are moments where several notes may hit at the same time in a chord, or you may have all, or at least many, notes hit in rapid succession, but the points where all the notes line up in a straight line are just slightly off of the music line. Very musically pleasing. Much more so than the somewhat jarring sound of every note all at once.
