The stereotype of ISTPs being drawn to "physical" careers is one reason I believed I wasn't an ISTP for so long. Do I enjoy physical things? Absolutely. But I'm a lawyer, and I am very confident in my ability to think through legal problems. I save the physical stuff - competitive sports, gardening, hiking, creating useful items - for my free time, which I make sure to have a lot of.

One of the greatest feelings i get as a ISTP is teaching someone something useful and practical. One thing i admire about INTJ's is their ability to appear to get a ton of things done with little effort or energy expended. As ISTP's we are bad at deligating things...so if we can overcome that then we thrive big time.

I am an artist / art history student / restourator always typed as INTJ. Yet I relate to both personalities' characteristics depending on how comfortable I am in concrete period of life.
It's ISTP's love for physical activity, working and enjoing the moment + INTJ's active thinking into the future, creating info maps, researching when everything is ok. During bad times I tend to shut down when trying to plan properly, live in the clouds, enjoy more intellectual activities, sit still for hours and organise everything to see more clearly and find a solution.
The thing with clothing is strange, too, cause comfort matters the most 😀

Wow! You sound just like me. I am an INTJ and an artist: illustrator, comic artist and writer. Very creative and passionate, but it's backed up with a lot of visionary and futuristic planning. Executing these plans becomes very Te, organized into schedules and efficiency, so it is vital to me that I don't get into an Ni-Fi loop or else it'll become extremely taxing to get all these stuff done.
I'm also picky when it comes to clothes too, making sure it's confortable so it's easier for me to do and navigate this external world. My favorite exercise is brisk walking. It's a good time to be in my head while getting to random places for miles.

I think one big job overlooked for mentioning for ISTP types is truck driving. It's not a glamorous job, but I've been a truck driver for years. I enjoy more of the construction-side of it and also learned how to use heavy equipment at an early age. I am sure that I am surrounded by ISTPs at my worksites! Most of us drive our bikes to work.

I'm 48 and I'm an INTJ. I do have physical hobbies but I think that was being influenced by my immediate family. My immediate family, especially the males, were probably had Se as a dom or aux function. I know my Mom was concerned when I was young about becoming a hermit because I hung up by myself in my own world. I did try a couple years of hockey, I wasn't very good but kudos for trying. I have no regrets there. Mom was proud of me for doing that even though I was at the wrong end of the ice most of the time. I was into computers a lot. I did pick up weightlifting in my 20s and a youth pastor showed me how. I started running in my 30s, I actually am a good runner it shocked me after I met a girl. Lol I'm working at a factory and I do spend a lot of time looking at doing something else. However, I'm noticing my hand-eye coordination improving in comparison to when I was younger like I just got bit by a radioactive spider or something. It's not uncommon for me to think, I did that?

    INTJ here.
We tend to be quite insightful compared to most people around and rather focus constantly on what is going to happen next. I tend to say things or jump many steps ahead in conversations and usually forget to explain the details until someone asks me to. (Ni)
We rationalise based on concrete evidence, when we theorise, we don’t get into theoretical reasoning (Te over Ti). Example of Te vs Ti are that I don’t value the theoretical use (or niche use) of the latest tech or gadgets, I value more so how a piece of tech/machinery/anything will be integrated with the rest of my house based on a broad criteria.
We can spot Phoniness and other peoples motives reasonably well. I do value truth, but if someone doesn’t want to give the truth or doesn’t care, we will likely call them out and might make an unfair decision for them. (Tertiary Fi) this might be the biggest difference between ISTP and INTJ) also, we look for emotional Consistency more so than logical consistency (Fi vs Ti)
I tend to misinterpret physical dangers, not notice my surroundings very well, and get stressed at spontaneously changing environments. I also get lost in cities without using Google maps. I also dislike explaining things such as how something works in great detail. (Inferior Se)
When it comes to welding, crafting or wiring (physical and detail oriented jobs) tends to be uncomfortable for us since we don’t have a good eye for detail and much rather not get into the understanding of every detail of a component of a piece of machinery, we only care about the fundamentals of how something works.
An example of INTJ and ISTP in engineering is that we would design the whole car in a holistic way such as how each major part/component is going affect the whole car, but we won’t care much about the details and practicality of each component anywhere to the extent an ISTP would.
    Hopefully this helps.

I was often conflicted that I'm an ISTP or INTJ. These days, seven months later after I wrote this I'm pretty sure that I'm an ISTP that was in a pretty bad Ti-Ni Loop for a while considering the state of the world during covid and personal issues caused by that time. I tend to show lots of Ni, Ti and Te on a similar equal footing but more Ti and strong Se since I was a child. According to my family I taught myself to use a spoon at an extremely young age and got the peas perfectly balanced on the spoon. I used to make things such as robots, boats and guns out of cardboard, toilet paper for stuffing and sticky tape since I was a toddler. However as a child I had some issues of clumsiness such as not being great at ball games, I was often distracted by thoughts or the external environment such as birds flying, Kangaroos on the field or the colours on someones clothing. The only sport I excelled at was martial arts like boxing and krav maga.
In a workplace I can act similar to an ESTJ, which is the ISTP shadow.

    • @NotThatKraken
      @NotThatKraken 2 роки тому +2

Se is focused on the things in the world around you. Ti is LOGIC, long trains of propositions that lead from one to another. Ni is focused on relationships among concepts in your head. Te is all about fixing the world, or explaining things. Se is the fourth function for INTJ. It would be very rare for an INTJ to be distracted by anything going on in the world around them.
Lots of Mechanical Engineers (and Machinists, and Mechanics) are ISTPs as that kind of engineering involves both complex thought processes, Ti, and physical objects, Se. Being good at using any tool, including spoons, is very ISTP. Lots of Software Engineers are INTJs. Software is purely conceptual, Ni, but you have to explain it in extreme detail, Te, by writing code to bring the program into reality.

@@NotThatKraken Hey man, sorry I missed this reply.
These days I'm more certain that I'm an ISTP.
I started working in a physical job and found it far more rewarding personally than sitting down for 8 hours, 5 days a week.
I was an Architectural Draftsman for 6 years and I had a tendency to be more focused on the structural details and its durability rather than its conceptual design. Originally I wanted to be in the military but I have flat feet and damaged knee cartilage in my knees. I was always drawn to physical reality a great deal, however I always tried predicting future outcomes and how worldly events will impact my future and the ones of others, especially during and after the Covid situation and being in the most locked down city on Earth didn't help. I think I was trapped in a Ti-Ni loop for a long time.

It's not being scared of the future, it's being prepared for a possibility. "Here are the things you can do to be prepared for these perceivable threats". You look at it as negative, that's your bias. Se is passively collecting data, not Ni. Ni is passively creating a summary of that data.
Why do you only associate expressing feelings with either playing the victim or anger? Expressing feelings can be done a in a calm and logical way. Which leads into "B" which that is not listed as an option either. The only time I get angry while trying to express my emotions is when the other person becomes defensive when I am merely trying to express my emotions so that there can be a level of understanding.
It's not that we are aware of the external and internal emotions but not know what to do with it, it's that we find the way emotions are typically expressed are cringe and we don't want to be that way - and since people have a hard time being direct, we choose to forfeit that awkwardness. Saying "just open up about your emotions" is like saying, "be cold and direct about expressing your emotions which offends people". You don't even realize what you asking, because you do not understand. And again you say "rarely think about your feelings", which then is an assumption that you think we are even having feelings about things. We think about things. Feelings are "Am I happy? Yes or No? Why yes? Why no? Compute ... problem? Yes or No? Yes? Continue, No? Solve, repeat original question sometime later."
"ISTPs don't get enjoyment out of deskjobs". Interesting. I've been building computers since I was a kid and have always been into Game Development. I spend about 12 hours a day in a chair at my desk working on my games/projects. I then get the desire to go on road trips and explore nature. There is that duality with ISTPs and we are not all car mechanics. Please stop with that stupid stereotype. "ISTPs don't like indulging" Really? I enjoy Se some much i am constantly indulging in Se before and after work, on the weekends so on and so forth. Some indulgences are bad for my health, while others are good for it.
Want to know what I think being principled with Ni is? Using Ti and Se (Fe in social situations) to confirm or deny the passive summarization (Ni) of Se information. Having Ni unchecked seems very unprincipled.
You're finally correct about being unsure of Se/Ni, as I hang with mostly N type people and can "dream" and "imagine" right along with them, but I am always refining their out of world ideas into something actually plausible. Imagining possibilities is not hard despite the internet inventing Ne Polr as a "blind spot". It's not blind, it's seen and disregarded.
Correct about clothing, and aesthetic does matter a little as well.
Your job examples are terribly stereotypically half correct about ISTPs. We could easily be philosophy teachers, coders, artists, and all those other "blacksmith" "car mechanics" the internet loves to prescribe.
ISTPs are like cats, and when we are in research mode can spend 20 hours researching a topic before passing out and then getting up early to pick up where we left off.
Your example of trying to express what a hobby is for INTJ is you trying to address a misunderstanding, so that is as an example of everything I said here. Open your mind to understand the reasoning behind what you see as behavior in ISTPs.
Manuals are a guide. But typically we want the parts laid out and we assess them first, visualize how it could come together, maybe align some parts, then skim the manual to see if we missed something and or to confirm we got it right. We don't need you directing, but at least it entertained you.

My personal experience with inferior Se is that it's like an on/off switch. For example, rarely leaving the house for a month except for work, gym or groceries, then going on a week long 50 mile backpacking trip. Ignoring/not noticing small details and sensations, or being hyper aware/annoyed by them. Forgetting to drinking water until a headache comes.
Stereotypes might suggest i don't do physical things, but that's not the case at all. Hiking, fishing, camping, dirt bikes, working on cars, home improvement, shooting, whitewater kayaking, skiing, family projects, etc. etc. At 20, i hesitated and let countless opportunities pass by, but now at 30 I never let a weekend go to waste anymore. Still don't enjoy bars or loud places though.

Definitely relate a lot to apathy towards environment that I think like you said would drive a Se dom/aux user crazy. Fashion-wise, I tend to veer formal and retro modern in a sense of fashion. The most dressed down you’ll see me in is a white t-shirt and suit pants, with derby wingtips/ankle boots. The istp I know definitely fits the fashionable yet function>form, he skates a lot and is always on the go as it is so lot of t-shirts and flannels/hoodies, cargo shorts, skate/tennis shoes. Definitely noticed the difference in communication in he’s more concrete and use of “frilly/flowery” language loses him and he tells you to just get to the point. Definitely see the difference in the physical activity level and an istp needing to get up and go a lot more constantly. Also the social approach, neither of us tend to be that talkative around new people, but he’s a lot more likely to come up to you and introduce himself whereas I don’t/don’t care and I tend to glued to my phone detached from the atmosphere of a social event. I also think both INTJs and istps have fucked up, dark senses of humor and get a rise out of getting looks from people.

ISTP and INTJ can look similar. In addition to what Alexis said, I suggest looking for Fe Achilles's Heel (in NiTx) vs Ne Achilles's Heel (in TiSx). Also to compare the Tactical SP which is ISTP vs the Strategic NT that is the INTJ. I think it is possible for an ISTP resembler to be Enneafix 5 fixated.
Also the INTJ resembler admires some traits of the ISTP esp its Se. If you see an ISTP in an a job more stereotypical of INTJ, I suggest you look for tactical expediency vs strategic thinking. The ISTP is likely to act faster but not consider all the implications.
Topic: lack of strategic thinking in WWE and example of STP tactics over strategy.
An extreme current example of expediency over strategic thinking is how WWE owner Vince McMahon (ESTP like his friend Trump) keeps changing his mind and corrupting long-term story plans of the writers in WWE. There have been a lot of rash cuts lately. VM makes a lot of last-minute changes eg the original plan was for the Fiend to defeat Randy Orton at this year's wrestlemania. Lack of strategic thinking by VM comes in how he doesn't 'push' his wrestlers properly by having a new character get a lot of wins under his or her belt before getting the big match. Having a new character defeated early on really undercuts the character. This happened with the Fiend. Bad booking = lack of longterm thinking.

I'm wondering if Ni3 also shows up in anxiety about one's personal future. I think I might be an ISTP but I don't really believe in conspiracy type theories at all. I do worry about what might happen in my life though. Also keep in mind that any type with an inferior feeling function can be prone to emotional outbursts after periods of suppressing emotions. Also I loved the part where you mentioned that INTJs would never want to move. Meanwhile I've been trying to find a job for ages that will also me to move around all the time but also engages my thinking and sensing. I'm a female and not really interested in welding and stuff like that. I'd go crazy and be very unproductive in a desk job. Interesting about the ISTP not caring about clothes. I've always read that Se is a lot to do with aesthetics as well. Now I'm really unsure. I always score high for Ni, find myself drawn to Se, and yet I'm not ISFP or INFJ. My aux/strength is definitely not feeling. Don't relate to Te at all, it's probably the function least like me. I definitely relate to the Explorer family. I've always just wanted to have a bunch of experiences. I've always said I just want to try everything. I'm bad at committing to things. I do care about people and the bigger picture but it's never been my lifes mission. My lifes mission has always been to experience. And yet I can be anxious of sensory things. On reddit I read posts from female ISTPs and we do tend to have more developed Fe and less developed Se than you would expect, but so many of us are into fashion and feely things like animals and stories. In conclusion: Not all INTJs are so focused on their career that they don't have any hobbies in parallel. I think that a bit of escapism from time to time is healthy for INTJs. :)

First time watching your stuff. Nice job. I think 4th function can be heavily influenced by upbringing and early success (not always turned off). Look at Arnold Schwarzenegger. As for me (INTJ), I was raised by a blue collar ESFP Dad (Electrician\Restaurant Owner\Center of attention) and ESFJ Mom (raised by strong SP Father\Construction Worker\Softball hall of fame) so I learned how to appreciate Se through physical labor and sport at an early age because I had no choice. I was the helper, always getting the next tool ready before it was asked for. But mental Se like making split second decisions without considering the outcomes or large groups\small talk drain me. Thoughts?

I've been having some struggles figuring out which one I am, but after this video I'm sure I'm ISTP. Been really confused about being a sensor or intuitive, but no doubt I'm a thinker. Also I think that if I had a desk job on the 8th floor I would jump off the window after 6 months tops. No way. Funny thing, I do really enjoy wearing black since I was a little kid, but I feel materials a lot, if I don't like the sensoring I won't wear, and I hate clothes that limit my movement like high heels.

Wow, so much and very helpful 💙 .. authenticity is king .. YES , from a very young age. Wonder how fake vs polite the other types are. Went into a new job and everyone was laughing at my jokes. Thought I was funny for about a week ( I was trying) But found out from a friend they were sucking up. Deemed it harmless and nice. Developed my own fake laugh, because often I THINK something is funny but it does not evoke external laughter. So still authentically think it is funny. Laughter comes to the surface a little easier after a year of this. Don’t know if I would have bought what I sold to myself in my teens. But I am here now. Will be trying to implement more eye contact as you mentioned. 👀 And am off to check out your social skills video. Thanks.💙

I think the context for the observed behaviours also matters, and it is the context that makes typing based on behaviours so difficult. I can neglect body needs to do something if I achieve the state of "flow", even when the thing is not super interesting. However, when facing constant interruptions or having to read over-complicated or lengthy arguments, I really have to do something physical just to avoid having to deal with the real problem. You made a point about clothing that I don't agree with. I think when choosing clothing, Te would also pays attention to the material if we are conscious about that criteria, i.e not leaving it to just touch feelings. Say, if I want to buy a t-shirt, I would want the t-shirt to be breathable because otherwise I would sweat in it; or to fall in some ranges of colour options to fit well with the rest of my wardrobe. All these would be decided before I actually see or touch the thing. I don't think this is Se.

    • @chillingongreens
      @chillingongreens 3 роки тому

Uh. I think being bothered by the fabric material would fall under introverted sensing. Wouldn't it?
Is extroverted thinking about... prioritizing how the external environment has patterns? And creating logic from that environment?
Types of fabric could be how extroverted thinking processes information. Especially when it can be useful in how it relates to the environment. Moisture wicking for a hot day... Raincoat for a wet one...
Am I making sense? I'm just guessing.

    • @chillingongreens
      @chillingongreens 3 роки тому

Sorry, I was ranting to clear out my own thoughts.
Do you think your choice in clothing relates more to introverted thinking?
I'm not totally sure what extroverted thinking is, but I think that it would have to try to connect with an external system for its logic.
      I could be wrong.

@@chillingongreens From what I understand, people with high Te base their opinions on the opinions of others, mainly authority figures (in their eyes) like teachers, politicians or parents.
They also care very much for efficiency and practicality. They love to create systems, procedures or strategies to improve the efficiency in their (work)environment.
Ti is forming your own opinion without any external influences. They take it in, think it through, look at every angle and base an opinion on that. That is why you have to come up with a very good reason for a high Ti user to change their mind. They also care very much about truth and honesty. They have very stern principles and they stick to them.
And the most important thing for both the Te and Ti: no feelings or emotions are part of the process. It is purely logical and rational.
I think the fabric of a shirt is a sensing thing, because you use your senses to determine what fabric you want.

This is a fun thread! As to buying T-shirts I'd say (speaking VERY loosely in generalities):
Te wants to buy a t-shirt that makes them respected and thought highly of by others or shows they have authority (suit, tie, etc.)
Si wants affordable (buy a 5 pack at 50% off) and to be comfortable (shoes for arch support), wearing what became popular 3 years ago
Se wants good quality, looks aesthetically pleasing (for those reasons may be more drawn to name brand like Levi's or Carhart in some personalities, maybe Gucci in other personalities)
Ni wants minimal and quality>quantity, timeless
Ne wants many options and usually higher quantity, new stuff that excites them in some way, more colors in general, more designs
      Not sure about Ti
      Fi wears what's self expressive
      Fe wears what's group expressive

I'm always researching and studying but dropped out of school as a teenager and am back in college at 38 years old. I do drink nightly and don't really take care of my body until It's kicking me in the ass to the point where I have to. On the flip side a typologist said that I was the walking definition of XNTJ but said ENTJ was more likely.. not sure there. Thank you for the clarification. This video left me more confused than before I watched it. Because with each point I have associated with both. So, to give an example. I am a welder that wears all black because I like the look of it, but I also select certain things over other for comfort or performance. Additionally, I make plans up to 5 years in advance, without prepping for the end of the world, but I do make contingencies in case of problems.
Also tonight alone, I got INTJ-A on the 16 personalities test, but also got ISTP on another test just before it.
I'm genuinely wondering if I am somewhere between both. I'm curious what your thoughts are? As I can't seem to find anything that makes me feel one is better than the other.

I think it might be possible if you're stuck in a Ti-Ni loop. Given the fact that the parent function (Se for ISTPs) can develop later in life, young people can often rely too much on their third function. I myself struggle with Te sometimes, which results in a Ni-Fi loop where I just stay in bed, projecting, thinking and pondering for most of the day.

Introverted intuition is about "connecting dots" to create unique and subjective patterns.
Imagine the constellations as different ideas with subjective values attached. Anyone can draw any pattern, but introverted intuition prefers this.
I'm not sure about introverted sensing. But extroverted sensing seems to be more focused on physically engaging in an external environment.
Maybe introverted sensing is more focused on things like taste, touch, sound...? Maybe their hobbies would lean toward music, food, painting, racecar driving? It uses their senses in a finely honed way?
Just a guess. There's my introverted intuition at work for you.
